Sow the lawn in October / November - when is it too late?

With the proper sowing, set the course for a velvety-green lawn carpet. The linchpin of a successful course is the choice of the appropriate time. With the end of the summer, the optimal time window opens to bring out the seed. The sun's rays have heated the soil, which gives the fine seeds a vital rooting. Given the heavy workload in the autumn garden, the ideal date is quickly missed. Read here how to sow grass in October / November. Do not puzzle about 'When's it's too late?' These signals tell you when the time window for this year has been added.

Ideal conditions

Lawn seeds are dormant so they do not start growing at an unfavorable time. In this way, Mother Nature ensures the preservation of the species. It depends on a well-balanced interaction of environmental influences and soil conditions, in order to put the seed in a good mood. The essential factors include water, oxygen and temperature. While you are influencing the first two aspects by means of targeted cultivation measures, in terms of temperature you are subject to the weather conditions. So that the sowing of lawns does not run into the void, therefore, these conditions must be observed:

  • the thermometer oscillates between 16 and 23 degrees Celsius
  • There is a changeable weather without a permanent sunburst
  • In addition, the soil is moist and fresh and permeable

Under these ideal conditions, the germination of lawn seeds takes between 7 and 28 days. Into play here the composition of the lawn mixture. While perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) pushes the seed leaves through the seed coat after only 7 days, pan grasses (Poa species) can germinate for up to 24 days.

Tip: The nice sounding names on the turf packaging have no significance for the quality. Take a look at the actual composition of grass species that make up the product. These notes are usually hidden in the small print on the bottom of the box to discover.

Sow the lawn properly in October / November

Professional tillage is becoming increasingly important if you apply lawn seeds in October or November while temperatures are at the lower limit. The better the seedbed is prepared, the faster germination progresses to win the race with the first frost. Decisive now is the rough preparation of the soil (rough plan), followed by the fine work (fine planum).

material

For soil preparation:

  • tiller
  • Spade and shovel
  • garden rake
  • rake
  • possibly through sieve
  • ground roller
  • sprinkler

For sowing:

  • lawn grass seeds
  • gritter

rough planning

The planting of lawns by sowing becomes a successful project if you pay close attention 14-21 days before to the soil with these

Preparatory work:

  • Milling the soil first or digging in 2 spades deep
  • carefully remove stones, roots and weeds
  • to optimize sandy soil with loam soil, compost, bark humus or horn meal
  • Enrich clayey soil with peat or quartz sand
  • then smooth the area with the rake or the rake

Finally, the lawn is treated with the roller and poured with a fine stream of water. Over the next 2-3 weeks, it must not be entered or rolled. If the weather is unexpectedly dry in October and November, please break the line regularly.

Tip: On areas that are heavily overgrown with weeds, you should not work with the planter, as the roots are unnecessarily distributed in the soil. It is better to rig the ground. For this purpose, each shovel is thrown with soil through a sieve during the digging and cleaned in this way.

fine plane

Allow the soil enough time to settle before sowing. Thereupon, the fine work is on the plan with the aim to provide the grass seed a seedbed as fine as possible. This is how you proceed professionally:

  • First rake the soil superficially and weed
  • Then work the soil with a rake until it has a crumbly consistency
  • If necessary, roll the area and rake again

The perfect fine planum creates an area that is as finely structured as a sand cake. Thanks to this care, you prune any unfavorable conditions in October or November and pave your grass seed the way to the green business card with envy factor.

Sow the lawn - that's how it works

With the completion of the soil preparation, you have completed the strenuous part of the work. Ideally, a hand spreader or spreader is now ready to sow the seeds evenly.

  • Mix the seed thoroughly by hand and pour it into the device
  • then sprinkle the seeds longitudinally and transversely
  • then work in the grass seed with the rake as light germination 0.5-1.0 cm deep
  • For optimum bottom closure, step off the seedbed with the roller in a checkerboard pattern
  • Finally, water the area with the lawn sprinkler

In the course of waiting for germination, you benefit from the autumnal time for sowing. In our regions, humid weather dominates in October / November, which guarantees excellent water supply to the seedbed. If this is not the case, please blow up the floor 1-2 times a day, but not in direct sunlight. Before you enter the sown area to position the lawn sprinkler, lay out some boards. In this way, you prevent an unsightly dimpling in the later appearance. Furthermore, we recommend that the bed be covered with a tight mesh so that the birds do not hackle over the seeds.
