How fast does it grow and how big is a hibiscus?

When comparing size and growth you have to differentiate the hibiscus species. The three most common among us are the rosemary (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), which is cultivated as a room or container plant, the garden marshmallow (Hibiscus syriensis) and the marsh marshmallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) . These plants grow differently and grow at different rates.

The rosemary can, if it is not cut, take stately proportions. Without cut its form but leaves mostly to be desired, the plants are sparse, little branched and have few flowers, as they bloom only at the instinctual ends and of which there is usually not much. Only one cut promotes the branching and thus the flower density.

A rose sibling in a sufficiently large planter creates in a few years loose 2 m height and a width of 1.5 to 2 m. The annual increase is usually only 10 to 20 cm, sometimes a bit more. Of course, growth depends on location, substrate and care. Only healthy specimens grow vigorously.

  • Uncut over 2 m high and 1.5 m wide
  • Regular cutting promotes branching, compact growth and flowering
  • Growth depends on care
  • 10 to 20 cm per year, sometimes more

The garden marshmallow is available as a shrub and as a high stem. In the stem form must be distinguished whether it is a grafted hibiscus or a naturally grown. With the grafted hibiscus nothing changes at the stem height, only at the thickness. The crown grows, depending on whether it is cut or can grow freely. However, the effect is much better if the crown is processed regularly, it develops so dense and much smoother. In a naturally grown hibiscus, the trunk usually remains smaller. It takes many years until there is a remarkable tree and requires a regular cut.

In the planting year, the strains usually hardly grow. They put their strength in the roots. The shoots can grow 10 to 30 cm from next year, depending on how the location, substrate and care ensure well-being. By a strong cut in the late winter, the growth of the shoots and the flower bud are stimulated.

Standard tree

  • grafted
    • Tribe height remains unchanged
    • Trunk circumference increases very slowly
    • Krone develops better by cutting
    • Annual growth of flowering shoots 10 to 30 cm
    • Crown 1 - 1.5 m in diameter, depending on the cut
  • Naturally grown and raised as a tree
    • Trunk length increases with the years
    • Scope grows slowly
    • The lower shoots must be removed
    • If the desired height is reached, form the crown
    • Crown 70 to 100 cm, depending on the cut

The normal shrub form of the garden marshmallow develops depending on the variety. Not all of these trees are the same size or remain the same size. There are 20-year-old specimens that are 4 meters high and 3 meters wide, but most do not reach a height of more than 2 meters, more preferably 1.5 meters and are also wide. By cutting, they are small, so they grow more compact and bloom much more. So if you are planning a high hibiscus hedge for the garden and want to go beyond 2 m, you must look specifically for suitable varieties. There are also tightly upright growing hibiscus, which remain much narrower and are well suited for hedges.

  • Normal shrub form 1.5 m to 2 m high and wide
  • Height and circumference are sort-dependent
  • Growth per year 10 to 30 cm

The marshmallow pulls its leaves in the fall completely. The strong shoots usually freeze, or are cut down in late winter. The plant drives out of the rhizome every year. Despite strong growth, the plants are usually not higher than 70 to 100 cm. When purchased these hibiscus have about 3, with a little luck 5 shoots. It can be assumed that 1 to 2 are added annually, so that the swamp hibiscus is becoming stronger and more compact and annual appear more flowers. From the place all around must be left about 40 cm space on all sides, so that the plant can develop evenly.

  • drives out of the rhizome every year
  • Height about 70 to 100 cm
  • Width about 80 cm
  • Flower size 20 to 25 cm in diameter
