The waffle pattern really looks quite the way you would expect the name. Crocheted in rows like a round, it is reminiscent of the deliciously sweet seduction that steamingly comes out of mum's waffle iron. It's not difficult to crochet at all, looks really funny and gives a nice surface texture.

Very popular is this checkerboard pattern in baby clothes. Due to its three-dimensional nature, it produces quite thick crochet work that keeps you perfectly warm. Try the waffle pattern in rounds at the next hat or crochet a whole doily in the smart pattern. You can choose between individual squares that are joined together to form a patchwork quilt and a complete doily in this pattern. With color variations you add exciting accents.

For the waffle pattern you need a little more yarn than you are used to from other patterns for the same area. Keep this in mind in your material costing!

Crochet the waffle pattern in rows

This pattern integrates with most crochet work. If you have specified a certain number of stitches for some reason, the waffle pattern adapts to it. If you have the choice, we recommend working with a number of stitches divisible by 3. Then the edge of the waffle is finally finished by a raise clean.

For the first row, slap an air chain with the desired number of stitches. If you stick to the "divisional-by-3" rule, you will receive two fewer boxes than you would expect. For example, if you want to have 5 closed boxes next to each other, you must strike 5 x 3 + 6 = 21 meshes.

For the second row, crochet a whole rod into the 4th stitch from the needle. The three air meshes form the first row of the back row. Now crochet a whole stick in each bubble.

Row A:

The next row starts with three meshes that replace the first one. Crochet a whole stick into the second stick of the previous row. This is followed by 2 relief sticks from the front. Next, crochet a normal, whole stick. Keep this change until the end of the series: a whole stick, 2 relief sticks from the front. The row ends with a normal chopsticks in the 3 air stitches from the beginning of the previous row.

Row B:

Start the next row again with 3 air stitches. In the 2nd stick of the previous row comes a relief stick from the front. Followed by 2 whole sticks and a relief stick from the front. You always switch between 2 whole sticks and a relief stick from the front to the end of the row. Basically, crochet now in the relief sticks of the previous row of normal chopsticks and vice versa.

Tip: A color change always lends itself to the B series.

Now crochet alternately row A and row B. Each row starts with 3 air stitches and ends with a whole stick in the air stitches of the previous row. In the end, it looks nicer to stop after the B series, but it's by no means a must. By the way, the reverse looks quite different in the back than the front, but no less pretty.

Crochet waffle pattern in rounds

version 1

For example, if you want to crochet a granny square in a waffle pattern, you have to do something different than rows. It's not much harder either.

Prior knowledge:

• strong stitches

• relief chopsticks

Start with a thread ring with 6 fixed stitches. Double every stitch in a second round. Close the round with a chain stitch.

The next round starts with 4 air meshes. These stand for a stick and an air mesh. Then crochet three whole sticks and an air mesh. This is followed by 2 more times three sticks and an air mesh. At the end of the round, crochet 2 more sticks. Close the round with a warp stitch in the 3rd Air Mesh from the beginning. Another warp stitch comes in the small hole that was created under the 4th air mesh.

Start with 3 air meshes. Next, crochet a chopstick into the small hole under the air mesh. After an air mesh, another 2 sticks come in the same hole. Then crochet a whole stick into the next 3 sticks of the preliminary round. In the hole under the air mesh from the preliminary round come two whole sticks, an air mesh and two more whole sticks. This is followed by 3 whole chopsticks. Repeat this procedure twice: In the hole on the corner come two sticks, an airlock and two sticks; in the straight crochet 3 whole sticks. Close the round with a slit stitch in the 3rd Air Mesh from the beginning of the round. Crochet one more warp into the next stick and into the airlock. Now you are back at the little hole in the corner.

Round A:

Now comes the first round with waffle pattern. This round will repeat itself alternately with the following one until your square has reached the desired size.

Also this round starts with 3 air meshes. Crochet a whole stick into the hole. This is followed by an air mesh and 2 more sticks in the same hole. The corner is exactly the same in this round. Now comes the difference:

In the first chopsticks after the corner crochet a relief stick from the front. This is followed by 2 normal sticks in the straight line, another relief stick from the front, 2 normal sticks and a last relief stick from the front. Now you have reached the corner. Crochet the usual 2 sticks, 1 airlock and 2 sticks into the hole at the corner. The next straight begins again with a relief stick from the front. Continue with the straight and corner scheme until you arrive at the end of the lap.

The last stitch is a relief stick from the front. Include this round with a chain stitch in the third chain of air from the beginning. Use two warp stitches to work your way to the hole in the corner.

Round B:

The second standard round for our waffle pattern starts with 5 air meshes. These are representative of 1 sticks and 2 air meshes. Crochet a whole stick into the corner. The straight line starts with 2 relief sticks from the back, followed by a normal stick. There are always 2 Reliefstäbchen alternate from behind and a normal chopsticks until you get to the corner.

Note: The Reliefstäbchen from the back always come in the normal sticks of the preliminary round. The normal stick always comes in the relief stick of the preliminary round.

Lastly, in a straight line you have 2 relief sticks. In the hole on the corner come in this round only a stick, 2 air mesh and another stick. Then it goes on with the relief sticks from the back in the next straight. As usual, end the round with a chain stitch in the third round of air from the beginning of the round. This time you only need one warp stitch to get into the hole at the corner.

Repeat rounds A and B as often as you like. Your square will grow fast. As a final round recommend you like the round B. So the pattern looks self-contained. As with crocheting in rows, the pattern also looks very different in rounds on the back than on the front.

Variant 2

If you would like to crochet gauntlets, a cap or something similar, you can proceed in the same way as for the waffle pattern in round I. Of course, the corners are gone. Just switch from round to round between the descriptions for the rounds in rounds A and B. The number of stitches in the waffle pattern should be divisible by 3 in rounds II. After the first round with air stitches, crochet a round with whole chopsticks. Then in the next round follow the instructions for the straight from round A.
