Not every scarf wearer would like to settle for a loosely fitting loop or a scarf that often slips. For such lovers, there is the shawl collar. Especially in children, there is nothing more practical than this well-fitting knit collar, because it stays where it belongs, even on the hottest slide. And what applies to children also applies to the adults. Dressing and a perfect fit is guaranteed throughout the day.

According to our instructions to knit such a shawl collar itself is one of the simple knitting instructions. Just right for beginners. Not only do you quickly have a wonderful knitting success, you can also try a wide variety of patterns with different yarns. With our step by step instructions, you can knit your own individual knit collar for every coat or anorak.

Material and preparation

A shawl collar has two important tasks to fulfill: it has to warm and should not scratch. Therefore, you should only process a high quality yarn. For fans of new wool, we recommend in our guide a soft merino wool. It warms and can be worn very well directly on the skin.

Merino blended yarns are also very suitable. You can find such yarns in every handicraft shop or at the various online suppliers.

Those who prefer cotton, also finds very pleasant cotton yarns. In winter, cotton yarns with a microfiber core are suitable. Then the warming effect is guaranteed. The line 337 Vigo by ONline is an example of this.

We decided on a new wool blend yarn. We wanted to knit a very thick collar. That's why we worked with a light yarn, but tweaked it twice.

• Our yarn corresponds to the Lang Yarns Merino 150, made from fine Australian virgin wool.
• It is knitted with a needle size of 3 to 3.5 and its length is 150 meters / 50 grams.

Who wants to knit a shawl collar for children, can also process a high-quality sock and this, as described in our instructions, also double take. Stocking yarn is very durable and can be washed well in the washing machine. In children, maybe not an unimportant aspect.

According to our instructions you need:

• 200 grams of wool (but this varies from wool to wool as each yarn has its own length)
• 1 pair of needles 6 knitting needles
• 2 buttons
• darning needle

Tip: Before you begin to knit according to our instructions, you should definitely make a knit with your wool. In this stitch, you will not only see how your pattern matches your yarn, you can also work out exactly how many stitches you need to make for your shawl collar.

Each bobbin shows how many stitches you need to make for a 10-centimeter square stitch.

Basic pattern in the full patent

Our basic pattern for the collar scarf is the full patent, which is very easy to knit, it is also often referred to as the real patent pattern.

Knitwork in patent samples are particularly suitable for the winter, as they receive a very voluminous character. The pattern is particularly suitable for thick scarves, shawl collars or thick jackets.

The full patent is a very elastic knit pattern and can stretch well.
Another advantage of this pattern is that the front and back appear the same. There is therefore no left or right side, both sides are the same.

However, in the case of the full patent design, it must be remembered that only every other row becomes visible. This means that more yarn will be processed. You should expect 30 to 50% more wool consumption. This must be considered when buying wool.

Instructions for the patent pattern

The number of stitches must be divisible by 2 in the full patent. For this pattern, we recommend an elastic cross stop.

1 round

• casting on

2nd round

• edge stitch
• 1 stitch on the right
• 1 st with an envelope in front of the st, lift off to the left (remove this st, do not knit)
• 1 stitch on the right
• Take 1 stitch with an envelope like left-hand knit.

During the entire 2nd round only the right stitches are knitted. The following stitch is lifted off to the left, with the thread lying in front of the stitch as an envelope. The round ends with a stitched loop.

• Knit 1 stitch with the right side of the envelope.
• Take 1 st in one turn left

In this round the stitches are knitted together with an envelope on the right.
And the following stitch, which appears as a left stitch, is lifted off with an envelope like left knitting.

So the 2nd and the 3rd round are always repeated.

Instructions for the last round

When the necessary number of laps has been reached, the mesh will be chained as normal as in the case of the full patent.

Knit one stitch on the right. Knit the next stitch on the right side and lift the first stitch over the second stitch. We knit every stitch on the right in our pattern, even though normally a left stitch is displayed.

Tip: When decoating in the full patent is important that the stitches are knitted loose. The best thing is to lift the stitches slightly. If the line is too tight knit, this last round pulls together and does not form a nice conclusion.

Nice edge stitch

Especially when knitting, such as a shawl collar or a normal scarf, care should be taken to complete a series with a clean edge stitch.

The very first edge stitch in the first round is knitted as the right stitch. Otherwise, the edge stitch is lifted off in a row only. The thread of the knitted last stitch is before work. Now, with the right needle, pierce this stitch behind and simply lift it up onto the right needle. The last stitch in the back row is always knit as the right stitch.

This means:

• The stitch in the back row is only lifted.
• The last stitch on the needle is always knitted on the right.

Knit buttonhole

Our shawl collar has two buttonholes.

These knit like this:

Depending on the size of the buttonhole, 2 or 3 stitches are bound at the marked position within the row. Knit 2 stitches, pulling the first over the second stitch. Knit 1 stitch, pull the previous stitch over this stitch. You have now chained off two stitches.

In the back row these two missing stitches are resumed. For this purpose, an envelope is placed crossed on the right needle per stitched stitch. In our case, that would be two envelopes.

These envelopes are knit in the next row as right and left stitches.
Only in the next row do you knit these two stitches as they should appear in the basic pattern.

Knit shawl collar

Our collar scarf has the following dimensions:

• 51 centimeters in width
• 35 inches in height

At these dimensions, the knitting is not stretched. That is, the work is only slightly stretched, the collar measures a few inches more in width.

It should not be overlooked that our instructions were knitted with double thread and a needle size no. 6. If you are using a yarn that is knitted with a different needle size, then you must orientate yourself by the size of the stitch sample and adjust the mesh size accordingly.

1 round

Cast on 66 stitches with double thread. Of these, two meshes are calculated as edge stitches.

2nd round

• edge stitch
• 1 stitch on the right
• Take off 1 stitch with the flap on the left
• 1 stitch on the right
• Take off 1 stitch with the flap on the left
• Knit off the entire needle in this order
• The round ends with a border stitch

3rd round

• edge stitch
• Knit 1 stitch with the envelope on the right
• Take off 1 stitch with the flap on the left
• Knit 1 stitch with the envelope on the right
• Take off 1 stitch with the flap on the left
• Knit off all stitches in this order.
• Knit one edge stitch at the end of the row.

In the order of the 2nd and 3rd round you knit the entire shawl collar.

Put the buttonholes

Our shawl collar is provided with two buttonholes. The first buttonhole knit at a height of 17 inches, the second buttonhole at the height of 19 inches.

Look at this centimeter as a suggestion. Of course, you can decide freely when you want to knit your buttonholes. You can also provide the shawl collar with just one big button, or maybe 3 smaller buttons.

For the buttonholes, chain the third last and fourth last stitch of the row on one side. In the next row, pick up two stitches again at this point. The description can be found under the information in the basic pattern.

Tip: A mistake can happen again and again, even a skilled knitter or a trained knitter. For the full patent pattern it is advisable not to break up the rounds until the mistake. It's better to knit the stitches back. However, if you feel confident about scrapping, divide the stitches only until 1 round above the error. Then needle all the stitches again and knit the last round back to the fault.

Last round - second round

On the last round bind off all the stitches and knit 2 stitches on the right side (the stitch is counted as 1 stitch on the loop). Pull the 1st stitch loosely over the second stitch. Now knit 1 stitch on the right.

There are now 2 stitches on the right needle again. Pull the 1st stitch loosely over the second stitch. At the end of the row there is 1 stitch left on the needle. Cut the thread and pull it through this stitch.

Finally sew all work threads.

Now the shawl collar is almost finished. Only the buttons that need to be sewn are missing.

The sewing thread is best used with a piece of wool with which you have knitted. If the buttonholes are rather small, then you should double the sewing thread for sewing. If you do not want to attach any visible buttons, then you simply sew snaps on the point where you want to close your collar.

An alternative

Men also love the shawl collar, because they do not like to freeze. But not every gentleman loves the patent pattern. Men often like it a bit more rustic. There is also an alternative for that.

You are welcome to take a slightly more rustic wool. As a pattern, you might be able to knit a plaid pattern. This is easy to knit, but with the right wool, it gives the shawl collar a masculine character.

Simply knit in alternation:

1st to 4th row:

• Knit 4 stitches to the right
• Knit 4 sts left

5th to 8th series:

In these rows, knit the stitches the other way round. The right-hand stitches become left-hand stitches and the left-hand stitches become right-hand stitches.

These 8 rows are repeated until you reach the calculated size of the scarf collar.
