Arm warmers are often called hand cuffs or wrist warmers. These fingerless gloves are very easy to knit and your imagination knows no bounds. Whether simple, plain or colorful knitted in a striped pattern, hand cuffs always look good. A highlight of our guide is the owl pattern. With us, you can not only learn how to knit hand cuffs, but also how to knit a trendy owl pattern. Your arm warmers will become a perfect fall accessory.

We opted for a light gray. With the incorporated owl these pulse warmers get a brisk and fashionable kick. Browns, reds or greens are also great for a fall look. Just let your creativity run free, then the gauntlets will be even better.

Material and preparation

In the wool selection, we have put emphasis on a high-quality soft merino wool, which is equipped with "superwash" quality and is thus ideal for hand warmers.

You need this:

  • 50 g merino wool with a running length of 120 m
  • Needle size 3.5
  • cable needle
  • Pearls for the eyes of the owl
  • Stopfnadel for sewing

Tip: You should be a little bit demanding when selecting the needle game. Pick the needles that match the yarn and your knitting style. These hand cuffs were knitted with bamboo needles. During the warm season, it is easier to knit with this natural product than with aluminum or plastic needles. The hands do not sweat so fast when knitting.

Knit hand tulips with owl pattern

The cuff of this wrist warmers was knitted in the rib pattern, whereby the right stitch is always inserted at the back. This gives the cuff a better elasticity.

cuffs

1. Punch 42 stitches on the cuff of the hand cuffs on a needle of your double pointed needles.

2. In the second round, then knit the rib pattern, one stitch on the right, one stitch on the left, and spread the stitches on all four needles in the order of 12-10-10-10.

3. After the last stitch, complete the round by knitting two stitches on the fourth needle from the first needle.

4. Now you have 12 stitches on the last needle and only 10 stitches on the remaining needles.

Tip: When closing the round, we recommend that you apply the first two stitches of the first needle to the last needle. In this way, no ugly gap is created when closing the round.

5. Now knit 10 cm high in the cuff pattern. As soon as you reach this length of the cuff, your hand cuff also becomes a wrist warmer.

6. To initiate the owl pattern four more rounds are knitted with only right stitches.

7. The owl width is 18 stitches. These 18 stitches are knit on a needle in the first round after the cuff pattern, so that the stitches of the first and second needle are together on a needle. The remaining two stitches are placed on the third needle.

8. Your needle game now looks like this: 18-12-12 stitches.

For these 18 stitches, the following description of the owl pattern applies. The remaining two needles with the 12 stitches knit always only with right stitches.

Knitting the owl pattern

1 round:

  • 5 stitches right
  • 8 stitches left
  • 5 stitches right

2nd round: Now knit all the stitches to the right.

3rd round: In this round you also knit all the stitches on the right.

4th round:

  • 5 stitches right
  • 8 stitches left
  • 5 stitches right

5th round:

  • 5 stitches left
  • 8 stitches on the right
  • 5 stitches left

6th round:

  • 5 stitches left
  • 8 stitches on the right
  • 5 stitches left

Knit feet

Round 7: Here the first braid is knitted for the feet of the owl. For this you knit as follows.

  • 5 stitches left
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail needle behind the work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Now knit the stitches of the pigtail needle to the right
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail before starting work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Now knit the stitches of the pigtail needle to the right
  • 5 stitches left

Until the 16th round knit how the stitches appear.

  • 5 stitches left
  • 8 stitches on the right
  • 5 stitches left

Knit head

17th round: In this round, the head of the owl settles from the body.

  • 5 stitches left
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail needle behind the work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Now knit the stitches of the needle on the right
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail before starting work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Now knit the two stitches of the pigtail needle to the right
  • 5 stitches left

18th round to and including 22nd round:

  • 5 stitches left
  • 8 stitches on the right
  • 5 stitches left

Knit ears

Round 23: In this round, the ears of the owl are knitted. For this you knit:

  • 5 stitches left
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail needle behind the work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Knit the stitches of the needle on the right
  • Put 2 stitches on the pigtail before starting work
  • 2 stitches on the right
  • Knit the stitches of the needle on the right
  • 5 stitches left

24th round:

  • 5 stitches left
  • 1 stitch on the right
  • 6 stitches left
  • 1 stitch on the right
  • 5 stitches left

The owl is already wonderful to recognize.

Round 25: Now knit only 18 stitches on the left, while knitting the right two stitches with the remaining two needles.

Round 26: Knit this round as well as the 25th round.

The next two rounds are then knitted only right and the thumb hole is incorporated as follows.

Decreasing

Round 27: All stitches are then knitted on all three pins to the right. When doing this, bind off the last five stitches on the third needle.

Round 28: Now knit all the stitches on all three pins to the right again and put the five stitched stitches back on the needle as five loops. Now the hand cuff with the owl pattern is almost finished.

The last rows that make the wrist warmer a perfect hand cuff, knit in the same pattern as the cuff. One stitch is crossed on the right, one stitch left on the other. We knitted this rib pattern 3 cm high.

Sew on and sew on eyes

After deconstructing the rib pattern, sew on the initial and final thread so that the hand cuff will not be pressed out.

As the last work on your hand cuff sew the two owl eyes. As eyes you can use small buttons or beads. Before you sew your eyes first with a pin before sewing, you'll find the right look for your owl eyes.

Tip: Try a slightly playful cuff pattern. Two stitches are knitted on the right and two stitches on the left, but the right stitches are made in every fourth row. It works like this: Two stitches on the right, two stitches on the left, three rounds. On the fourth round, first knit the second right stitch, leave on the needle, then knit the first of the right stitches and then let both stitches slide off the needle. A little braid is knitted.

The second hand cuff works just like the first cuff. Only for the thumb hole you have to work against the same, ie mirrored. That means, in the 27th round, you chain the first five stitches from the second needle and loop them back in the 28th round. So you get once right and once left a thumb hole.

You see, with just a little patience and time, even beginners can knit such beautiful hand cuffs. The knitted owl pattern is worth the effort, so grab your wool and needle and get started.
