Measure sleeve length: Instructions for measuring the arm length

  • Measure sleeve length: instructions
  • Measure short sleeves
  • Tip - measure sleeves

The sleeve length is one of the key factors in choosing a shirt, blouse and other tops that have longer sleeves. As with many other measurements that are needed for clothing, the measurement turns out to be a bit complicated at first glance. Nevertheless, the arm length can be determined within a few minutes with the right instructions and a helping hand.

Shirts and blouses are among the essential items of work and leisure. They can be worn as well as dresses, sweaters or jackets for festive occasions or a relaxed evening among friends. What do these garments all have in common ">

The measurement of the sleeve length is not complicated, but a matching utensil is needed for this. You do not need more than a soft measuring tape, as tailors use for clothing. Dispense with the use of a tape measure from the hardware store. These are usually rigid and can not really apply to the body shape, which leads to significant measurement errors. You should also make sure that the measuring tape is one in centimeters or centimeters and inches. Although inch scales are rare in Germany, you would have to convert the result at the end.

Measure sleeve length: instructions

When measuring the sleeves, it is recommended to have a helping hand available. As a result, the dimensions can be taken without measuring errors, which is not possible or only with great difficulty on its own. It is not necessary to take these measurements without a top, since it is only about the length and not around a circumference. Pick up the measuring tape and follow this guide to learn your arm's length:

Step 1: Before you start measuring the sleeve length, stand straight and let your arms hang. Pay attention to a good posture and do not drop your shoulders as this could negatively affect the measurement result.

Step 2: Now bend your arms slightly. In any case not at an angle of 90 °. The diffraction should be natural and not too far to support the resting position of the arms.

Step 3: The tape measure is now applied to the top of the shoulder, where the sleeve is sewn to the shirt. Position the beginning of the tape measure in the middle to capture the measurement result as well as possible.

Step 4: Follow the course of the arm over the elbow to the carpal. You must include the diffraction in the measurement.

Step 5: Check again if the measuring tape is in the correct position and then note the value if a correction is necessary. If not, you can write down the first value immediately.

With this method you can quickly and easily capture the right sleeve length and you can easily realize your matching top.

Tip: The average sleeve length for shirts and blouses is 64 cm, and many of the products you see in boutiques or department stores are offered with this length. Short sleeves are below and longer sleeves are above this value, which may be helpful in choosing a suitable top.

Measure short sleeves

In addition to the normal sleeve length numerous tops are offered with short sleeves, which are measured a little differently. This measurement is only useful if you want to customize a shirt or blouse and even choose the length of the short sleeve. It has the advantage that you know directly how long the sleeves will be and can, for example, specify this when ordering in an online shop. Proceed as follows for this measurement:

  • relax
  • let your arm hang relaxed
  • is measured as in the long sleeves directly from the shoulder bone on the outer edge down
  • You can now choose the length yourself
  • just measure it in the place that suits your needs and write down this value
  • if you want the sleeves to be longer than the elbow, you have to bend it again
  • make a note of the measured value

As such, you do not need to add an extra two centimeters to this measurement because your arms only go to a certain point. However, if you want a three - quarter or short sleeve above the elbow, you will need to add these two inches. The tension above the elbow can be quite high, which shortens the sleeves, especially if the upper arms are more muscular or fuller.

Tip - measure sleeves

There is another way to measure your sleeve length without the help of a friend or family member. You can just take a top whose sleeves are just the right length. This is especially useful if you have ever had a shirt or blouse fitted to a tailor. These correspond in most cases to your measurements and can therefore be used. Proceed as follows:

  • spread the top in front of you
  • spread sleeves slightly
  • Now place the measuring tape on the shoulder tip and guide it to the end of the sleeve in a clear line
  • the sleeves do not have to be bent in this variant
  • read the value and make a note of it
  • it is not necessary to add two inches to the result

Although this method is fast and allows a clear result, it is still not as accurate as measuring your arms directly. Note that the value might be a bit too long or too short in the end.
