Restoring basement floors is no easy matter. When painting modern concrete floors, a lot must be considered. Since in cellars a higher dust development is possible, but a regular coat of these can significantly reduce. The appearance of a cleanly painted concrete floor can also look much better and neat.

Renovating or painting cellar floors is not always a simple matter. Old cellar floors can be made of different materials. Often, old cellars are built according to a moisture management system that includes windows, doors and basement floors. These floors should not simply be painted with a water- or air-impermeable paint, otherwise the air circulation with the compensation of the moisture is endangered.

Not infrequently prevails in these old cellars, a humidity of about 70 to 80 percent. Old basement floors may need to be rebuilt from the ground up with a new floor. Otherwise, the congestion of moisture threatens the consequences of mold growth. Not infrequently, mold is the big problem with badly renovated old cellars.

From about the 90s of the last century basement floors with a so-called vapor barrier were built in new buildings. The modern concrete floors in younger cellars are easy to paint. But there are also some important things to keep in mind, such as special rules for painting boiler rooms, using the right materials and colors, and much more. Since in cellars with concrete floors often a fairly large amount of dust is possible, but it may be very useful despite the slightly higher cost to paint the concrete floor. The appearance can also be improved by a fresh and clean coat of paint.

Tip: If you want to renovate an old cellar floor, lay tiles. This will give you a nice clean and durable floor that retains its circulation through the joints without being completely sealed. Modern, beautiful and resilient for old basement floors can also be suitable for these soils suitable bulk materials.

Material and preparation

The right color for painting concrete floors

To paint you need water - thinnable cement or floor paint. Not infrequently, basement floors are exposed to high loads. This abrasion-resistant paint ensures durable and easy-care floors made of concrete or other mineral materials. This color is also resistant to a wide variety of chemicals. In addition to basement floors, it can also be used, for example, in sheds, workshops, warehouses and similar rooms provided with concrete floors. In boiler rooms and boiler rooms use only an oil-resistant paint, which should be applied in three layers.

You need these materials and tools:

  • a water-dilutable cement and floor paint,
  • possibly a deep, adhesive or barrier primer,
  • a big lambskin roll and a little sheepskin roll,
  • different brushes, such as a radiator brush,
  • an extension rod for the paint rollers, z. B. telescopic rod,
  • a bucket, broom, vacuum cleaner,
  • possibly grinder, drill and whisk to stir the paint
  • Masking foil or paper for masking, adhesive tape for masking sockets and strips.

The preparation of the soil before the first coat

The basement floor should be thoroughly cleaned before the first coat of paint. Coarse dirt can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or broom. Subsequently, heavier soils should be removed with water. If necessary, the entire floor can be wiped with water. It is important that the floor before the first coat of dirt, dust and grease and completely dry. Only then may the color be applied. If a cleaning agent is used during wiping, the floor must be wiped with clear water to completely remove any residues of the cleaning agent. Very irregular floor surfaces may need to be sanded and straightened before the first coat of paint. These soils are also very carefully cleaned after sanding from dust and dirt.

The primer of the basement floor

Cellar floors, which are to be painted for the first time with a floor paint, require in advance a primer. Deep background is a color which in most cases consists of a base of alkyd or acrylic resin. This base compensates for the absorbency of the soil and ensures better adhesion of the cement paint to the substrate. As a result, less cement paint is needed for sufficient coverage. The underground should be applied in even and continuous tracks on the basement floor. For less absorbent surfaces, a primer may be sufficient.

Floors which are regularly exposed to greater humidity, such as in laundry rooms or the like, should be provided with a barrier primer. This barrier primer prevents the ingress of water into the soil. The primer needs approximately a drying time of 12 to 48 hours. The first coat of your cellar floor may only be made when the primer has completely dried.

Tip: Only use special primers and paints suitable for these floors in your garage. In the tires of motor vehicles or bicycles plasticizers are included. These could affect the painting of the soil and dissolve the color. Commercially special color is available for garages.

Paint the basement floor

For a long shelf life and good coverage, basement floors should be painted at least twice with the cement paint or floor paint.

Tip: There are three layers of paint for floors in boiler rooms. They should be painted in two different shades, for example gray-blue-gray or similar. Boiler rooms or boiler rooms must be painted in accordance with the fire protection regulations. For example, the three layers of oil-resistant paint should be clearly visible on the paint finish on the wall for inspection by an appraiser.

The right painting of concrete basement floors

First, paint the edges and corners of the surface with a brush or the little lambskin roller. The strips and sockets should also be painted first. Then you can paint the entire area with the large roll in adjacent tracks. The work should be done in one go, as otherwise color approaches could remain visible.

For the first coat of cement paint you can dilute it with 10 percent water. Mix the paint evenly with a whisk for the drill. With existing older paints it may be necessary to even coat the floor with an intermediate coat of paint. The intermediate coat and finish should be done with the undiluted cement or floor paint. You can simplify the intermediate coat by simply letting some paint flow on the floor and evenly distributing it with the roller attached to a telescopic pole. The last coat of paint but you should again paint in seamless tracks. Paint each run only after the previous coat has completely dried. With a meticulous, even and seamless coat of paint, your newly renovated cellar floor can stay in good condition for a few years at medium and normal loads.

Selection of color

You may only enter your freshly painted cellar floor after it has completely dried. The cellar floor color dries pretty quickly. So entering is likely after a 24-hour drying time without problems. Cellar floor paint can be obtained in DIY stores or in specialist shops in different colors depending on the manufacturer, such as white-gray, silver, gray, beige and beige-gray, as well as others. Also possible are the distinctions silky matt, matt-glossy, silky or glossy.

Basement soil color is in the most common cases in color buckets from 5 liters to obtain. Depending on the manufacturer, the areas that can be painted with this amount of paint vary. It is approximately 8 square meters with a single coat of paint. Likewise, the qualities and prices for the basement floor color may vary depending on the manufacturer. Cheap cellar floor paint is available from about 5 euros per liter. Garage floor paint is also available in paint pots with 2.5 liter and is often much higher in price than the conventional cement or floor paint. A price comparison with different providers can be very rewarding.
