Children's socks are among the indispensable items of clothing in the cold season. Nothing is more important in winter than having warm feet. It does not matter if you are in the house or on the toboggan run. Even an old proverb says: "Keep your head cool, your feet warm, that makes the best doctor poor." Because when you freeze on the feet, the blood in the mucous membranes of the ear, nose and throat area can circulate less. Viruses find a good nesting site and a whopping cold is the result.

Therefore, especially with children, it is essential to make sure that they wear well-warming socks. So what is more obvious than to reach for the needles and to knit the most beautiful children's socks? There are beautiful and child-friendly knit motifs and a perfect sock yarn. The instructions for children's socks to knit yourself get along with a size chart by zhonyingli.com.

Material and preparation

When knitting children's socks you should always pay attention to hard-wearing wool. Good craft shops or online shops are equipped with special sock yarn. This is usually wool from new wool or from a high-quality mixed yarn. It is important that the wool is breathable and that the feet stay warm without starting to sweat. Most sock yarns are composed of 75% virgin wool and 25% polyamide. This composition guarantees the necessary breathability and stability for the knitting work. It is equally important that even children's knitted socks are washed at low temperatures in the washing machine and then dried in a tumble dryer. Therefore, it is advisable that you only knit high quality wool for self-made socks.

We chose a sports and stocking wool from Wolle Rödel. It is quadruple twisted and equipped with superwash. A durable and high-quality yarn, which, according to experience, keeps feet warm and can withstand many washing machine runs. But other manufacturers also offer good sock wool. All that matters is that it is a natural fiber, preferably a mixed yarn.

For our instructions you need between 50 and 100 grams of yarn . It depends simply on the shoe size, for the knitted is.

With children's socks for shoe size 23 you will need 50 grams of wool. For stockings for size 33, you will need 80 grams of wool.

  • Needle size 3 needles - if you choose a roll cuff, as our example 3 shows, you need 2 needle size 3 needle games
  • possibly 2 buttons
  • 1 darning needle
  • tape measure
  • scissors

Tip: Before you start to knit the children's socks, you should do a small stitch test. Knitting a stitch with a size 3 needles and a 2.5 gauge needle size. You will notice that there is a noticeable difference in size. So you can already decide on the basis of the needle size, whether the predetermined number of stitches in our size chart is suitable for you. Do not forget that the way you knit, loose or tight, can be just as crucial.

Instructions: Knitting children's socks

attack

Hit all the stitches on a needle according to the size chart. Only from the second round split the stitches on 4 needles and connect needle 1 with needle 4.

cuffs

The cuff gives the sock a decorative finishing edge and at the same time a firmer grip on the leg.

There are different ways to knit a cuff. We show you two types:

Pattern 1:

1 stitch on the right - 1 stitch on the left - In our experience, knitting the right stitch has become a good idea. That is, the right stitch is inserted from the back. This gives the cuff more elasticity, which is retained even after a long wearing time.

Pattern 2:

The roll cuff. The detailed instructions are described in our guide to the gum-gum pattern. Conventional cuffs are knitted about 3 inches high.

shaft

The shaft is the foot part, which lies between cuffs and heel. You knit this part according to the instructions. There are usually no stitches added or removed at the shaft. The height of the shaft depends on the size of the foot.

cap heel

The coping heel is a knitting method in which the heel sits well and comfortably in the stocking.

1st section

Fold the needle 1 and 4 together on a needle. It is now worked in back and forth row. Needles 2 and 3 remain shut down.

RS row:

  • Knitted stitches on the right

Back row:

  • knit left stitches
  • Knit the last stitch as edge stitch on the right.
  • The first stitch as edge stitch only lift off. The thread is in front of the needle.
  • According to the size chart, knit the heel height.

2nd section

After the heel height is reached, start with the coping.

How to work the cap:

Divide the number of stitches into 3 parts: for example, 8-8-8. That is, each third has 8 stitches each.

Knitting like this:

15 stitches crossed right (these are the stitches of the first and second thirds). Knit together the 16th stitch and the 17th stitch (the 17th stitch is the first stitch of the third) on the right side. That means: Take off the 16th stitch, knit the 17th stitch, then pull the lifted stitch over the knitted stitch. Turn the work over. The just knitted stitch only take off. Leave the stitches of the third third and continue working with the last knitted stitch. Knit the back row to the left. Knit seven stitches from the middle third and knit the eighth stitch with the next 1st stitch from the 1st third on the left. Turn to work. The stitch again only take off.

There are only 7 stitches left and right on the needle. The middle third still has 8 stitches for the skullcap. Knit this row again until the penultimate stitch of the middle third. The last stitch you knit right again with the coming stitch from the third third together.

Turn to work.

  • 1. Lift off the stitch.
  • Knit the remaining stitches of the middle third on the left.
  • Knit the last stitch left to the left with the 1st stitch of the coming third on the left.

You can now recognize the cap. Work all rows in this episode until only the mid-third stitches are on the needle.

heel flap

The stitches that were all knitted together for the cap must now be picked up again in the heel wall. To do this, take 1 stitch from all edge stitches on your needle. To avoid creating an unwanted hole, you can also pick up a right-hand stitch from a stitch that is in transition to the next needle that has been shut down.

The next 2 abandoned needles - knit as described in the sample instructions. Now on a new knitting needle, just as on the first heel wall, take 1 new stitch from each edge stitch. You can pick up the first stitch from a knitted stitch that lies in front of the edge stitches. There should be no unwanted hole.

On this needle, knit half of the stitches from the coping needle. You now have 4 complete needles with the same number of stitches. Depending on how high you knit the heel spine, it may be that you now have more stitches on the needles 1 and 4 than on the two disused needles. These surplus stitches are removed again in a gusset.

gore

Before we work the gusset, knit 2 rounds as usual with right stitches. Only then do we start with the gusset removal:

Needle 1:

Knitt the second and third last stitches of the needle to the right. Knit the last stitch of the needle normal right.

Needle 2 and 3:

Kick off as usual.

Needle 4:

  • Knit the 1st stitch on the right.
  • Lift off the 2nd stitch on the right.
  • Knit the third stitch on the right and pull it over the lifted stitch.
  • Knit off the remaining stitches on the right needle.

Knit the next round without loss. In the third round of gusset picking work as in the first round of the gusset and remove the stitches. The decrease takes place until you have the regular mesh size on each needle again.

Sockenfuß

The foot of the sock knits like the shaft, easy and fast. The length of the foot can either be taken from the original foot for which the socks are knitted or you can follow our size chart for children's socks.

toe

At the foot tip we divide the four needles into two groups:

  • Group 1 = needle 1 and 2
  • Group 2 = needle 3 and 4

order:

Needle 1:

  • Knit right to the last 3 stitches.
  • Knitt the second and third last stitches of the needle to the right.
  • Knit off the last stitch on the right.

Needle 2:

  • Knit the 1st stitch on the right.
  • Take off the second stitch on the right.
  • Knit the third stitch on the right.
  • Pull the lifted stitch over the knitted stitch.
  • Knit off the remaining stitches as usual.

Needle 3:

  • Knit exactly like needle 1.

Needle 4:

  • The needle is knitted exactly like the needle 2.

The decrease takes place up to half of all needle stitches in every second round. That means: take one round, knit a round normally. If only half of the stitches are on a needle, the stitching lace stitches will be removed each round. The last 2 stitches on each needle are all removed in one turn. To do this, cut off the thread in sufficient length. The first stitch is knitted and the thread is pulled completely through this stitch. Knit the next stitch, pull the thread all the way through the stitch. So continue until you have pulled the thread through the last stitch. Put on the thread and sew in the inner part of the children's stocking.

The sock is finished - work the second child sock in the same way.
