Sewing origami pouch - Instructions for origami reversible pouch

You are currently very trendy with an original origami reversible bag. Inspired by the Japanese art of folding, I will show you today how you can easily sew a reversible bag with just a few steps. The ends of the fabric are folded in several steps and then sewn.

The bag is perfect for a shopping trip, a trip to the lake or just in everyday life. Thanks to the dimensions, even larger items such as work documents, laptops or purchases can be stored in them. In addition, the origami reversible bag can be folded small and easily fits in other bags and suitcases.

We sew the origami bag with two wide pieces of fabric. I use a canvas fabric for the bag today, but any fabric can be used. Especially canvas, woven cotton or French terry are particularly suitable because they have a firmer structure than jersey and are not stretchy.

For the handle, I use a piece of cork that I found in the left-over box. The handle can also be made of the same fabric as the bag, SnapPap or any other solid material. If you want to work with leather, don't forget to clamp a special sewing needle for leather in the sewing machine. Other needles can easily break here because the tip is too blunt and cannot penetrate the solid leather.

preparation

Step 1: First we cut the two pieces of fabric to the desired size. It is important to note that the fabric should be three times as wide as long, otherwise we will not be able to fold the bag properly. I choose a size of 126 cm x 42 cm .

If you want to sew the bag without a second piece of fabric, i.e. not as a reversible bag, the fabric must be hemmed. To do this, add 1 cm on each side to these measurements.

ATTENTION: If you only sew with one piece of fabric, iron all edges 1 cm inwards so that the left sides of the fabric lie on top of each other. The corners are hemmed as follows: Fold the corner inwards by 2 cm.

Then fold the first side and then the second side inwards so that the corner has a nice diagonal line. Iron the corners again before hemming. Then stitch once around the entire piece of fabric with the straight stitch of your sewing machine.

Step 2: Now we place our two pieces of fabric with the right side of the fabric facing us. Now fold the right side down and the left side up for the first piece. The whole thing should look like this.

In the second piece of fabric, the right side is turned up and the left side is turned down.

ATTENTION: So that the fabric bags fit together later, they have to be folded in opposite directions!

To create the famous origami pocket shape, fold the square in the middle along the diagonal to one of the sides, so that two tips are created like a crown.

Now pin the diagonal where the two fabric edges meet, right to right with clips or needles.

Step 3: I use a cork fabric to cover the handle. As already mentioned, almost any reasonably strong fabric is suitable, but also elastic fabrics such as jersey. Cut a piece of size 12 x 15 cm here .

Step 1: The sewing machine continues! Now stitch the already set diagonals with the straight stitch of the sewing machine. You can lay the fabrics along the edge.

Step 2: We now do the same with the diagonal on the back.

TIP: If the fabric has shifted due to the sewing of the front, simply fold the fabric again as in preparation according to the specified folding pattern to find the correct edges.

Step 3: When you have sewn both sides of the two pieces of fabric, we push the inner and outer fabric right to right into each other.

Then, pin out the entire top opening (including the two tips).

Then stitch once around the bag.

Be sure to leave an approx. 10 to 15 cm wide turning opening!

TIP: When you arrive at the tips of the bag, turn the handwheel until the sewing needle is in the fabric. Then raise the presser foot, turn the fabric in the desired direction and lower the presser foot again. Now you can continue sewing and the seam runs perfectly along the edges.

Your sewing result now looks like the picture below.

Step 4: Next we turn the bag on the right side of the fabric. You can now close the turning opening either by hand or with the machine.

In this case I recommend the variant with the sewing machine as we sew around the opening again to find a nice finish.

Step 5: Push the two fabric sides of the turning opening inwards.

Fix the opening with clips or needles.

The rest of the pocket opening is also fixed in this way.

Stitch around the entire origami reversible bag again.

Your current nutritional result looks like the one in the next picture.

Step 6: For the envelope on the handle, fold the two longer sides of the small piece of fabric approx. 1 cm inwards.

Topstitch both with the straight stitch.

This is what your sewn straight stitch looks like in the result.

Then fold the shorter pages right to right.

Step off the straight line again with a narrow edge.

Your finished nutritional result is now shown as shown in the next picture.

Now pull the cover over one of the handles so that we can sew the two tips together.

To do this, put one tip over the other and make a small, straight seam from top to bottom.

The further sewing result can now be seen, as can be seen in the image below.

Your sewn cork handle is now complete.

Ta-da! The origami reversible bag is ready. We pull the small cover over the sewn together ends and the bag is ready for use.

Depending on your mood , the bag can simply be turned from one side of the fabric to the other. I hope you enjoy sewing!
