Although Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is mostly cultivated as a houseplant, outdoor living is more than auspicious for the warm months. However, the plants must not be placed directly in the sun, but must be slowly and gradually accustomed to these. Blazing midday sun is not recommended even after the acclimatization, just like drafts. Between 11 and 17 o'clock a place in a shady corner is to be preferred. The location is both outdoors and in the room with a deciding factor for a good development. In addition, of course, a suitable plant substrate, optimal water and nutrient supply and of course the hibernation.

Location

As a houseplant, the hibiscus prefers a bright and sunny spot. However bright midday sun does not get the plants behind a window. Better is the shading by a curtain. A lot of light is important, in summer just as in winter. The plants like to spend the summer outdoors, whether on the balcony, the terrace or in the garden itself. It is important, however, that they are slowly getting used to the sun. So first set them in shady shade and then each time in the sun for one hour, first in the morning and in the evening and then longer and longer. Brilliant midday sun is not recommended, which can lead to burns.

In winter, plenty of light is necessary. Darkness does not tolerate the hibiscus well, the shoots are unnaturally long and remain weak. Those who can not provide enough natural light, should think about a plant lamp. The space above a heater is not ideal, because the air is too warm and too dry there. With a room well, a nebulizer or the like, however, the humidity can be increased.

  • outdoors in summer - without midday sun
  • alternatively in the south window, at noon shaded by curtain
  • in winter - as bright as it gets
  • if flowers are attached, do not change

potting soil

Important for the Zimmerhibiscus is quality soil. The plants thrive best in humus-rich and nutrient-rich soil. It is important that this is very permeable, so that excess water can drain. With very solid substrate, it is therefore useful to mix in sand. Perlite is also suitable for mixing.

Hibiscus prefers loose substrate
  • permeable
  • nutritious
  • Mix in sand or perlite

plants

Especially young hibiscus plants should be repotted annually. Especially important is a change of the earth. The vessel should always be one size larger. Important is a drainage in the bottom of the pot, so that excess water can drain well. Older hibiscus need only be repotted at the age of two or three. Here one exchanges only the earth, that vessel remains.

  • Repot young hibiscus annually
  • older every two to three years
  • Do not forget drainage

to water

The water needs of the Zimmerhibiskus is quite high, especially in the summer. The plants also love a high level of humidity. Best room-warm water is used, not too cold. It is important to pour penetrating so that the whole earth is well moistened. The art is that afterwards no water in the planter or coaster remains. Waterlogging quickly leads to root rot.

Water regularly

It is only poured again when the soil is superficially well dried. It should not dry out, which weakens the plants, especially if it occurs repeatedly. So it's time to find a rhythm, to pour regularly, but neither too much nor too little.

  • pour more in the summer
  • regular and penetrating
  • no stagnant water
  • no ball dryness

Fertilize

After the winter break at the end of February, fertilization is started. The best is fertilized every day. As a rule, normal flowering plant fertilizer is absolutely sufficient. He is dosed according to the package information, rather weaker, than too strong.

  • after hibernation fortnightly
  • normal flowering plant fertilizer
  • alternatively Hakaphos green

To cut

The Zimmerhibiscus needs a cutback, so as not to be too big and sparse. The plants grow during the winter except during the dormant year round and should be cut so that they appear more compact. Without cut, the plants will grow blunt from the inside and the flowers will only sit on the outer ends of the shoots. That's not a nice overall picture. With a radical pruning in the spring, it takes a while for the hibiscus to flower again, but the plants are blooming on this year's wood, so there are no problems. The hibiscus is a late bloomer.

Cut the room hibiscus

Alternatively, it is advisable to shorten only half of the shoots strong and let the others bloom earlier. These are then cut after flowering, so the flowering time is extended. First the "old" shoots are blooming, then the cut back ones. A hibiscus can be radically cut back, up to 15 cm shoot length. The more cut, the stronger the shoot, the thicker the plants become. Without cut also leaves the flowering joy of the plants.

  • strong cut for compact growth and many flowers
  • cut in autumn or after winter break in late February
  • make it possible at any time

overwinter

When hibernating the location is crucial. It is important that the plant gets a lot of light. In addition, the room should not be too warm. Although Zimmerhibiskus can stand in the living room, but there the conditions are not ideal. The consequences are often pests, sometimes diseases. In addition, usually leaves the flowering joy. The place above a heater or in the immediate vicinity is unfavorable. Harmful are temperatures below 10 ° C, which are not tolerated. Ideal are temperatures around 15 ° C. Casting is much less. The plant bale should not dry out. Stagnant water is to be avoided. The cooler the location, the less water is needed. It is not fertilized.

Hibiscus does not like frost!
  • cool hibernation at 15 ° C
  • not below 10 ° C
  • above 20 ° C unfavorable
  • pour little
  • do not fertilize!

multiply

Zimmerhibiscus can be propagated by cuttings and by sowing. In the propagation of cuttings an identical plant comes out in the propagation of seeds that is not safe. Shoots for cuttings increase when pruning, which can be used well.

  • Cuttings - 10 to 15 cm long
  • remove lower leaves
  • rooted in a glass of water (is the fastest)
  • alternatively equal in plant substrate
  • bright, but without direct sun

Diseases

Diseases rarely occur, usually with too many care mistakes. Often it is too much wetness or the opposite, prolonged dryness. If this happens once, it is usually no problem. But if it occurs more often, the plants are weakened. Diseases and even pests can occur.

  • Root rot in too much wetness
  • Mildew in weak immune system - usually due to too many care mistakes

pests

In the case of the pests, it is mainly aphids that cause the plants to stay outdoors. They should be rinsed off before they proliferate too much. Spider mites often occur during wintering. They must be discovered early and fought before they weaken the hibiscus too much.

Aphids on the buds
  • Aphids - when staying outdoors
  • Spider mites - in case of not ideal wintering (too warm, too dry air) - soft soap solution
