Applying explained easily and understandable
There is nothing more valuable than something that you have made yourself with much patience and love. Especially with baby and children's clothing and accessories, you can let your creativity run free and create magical unique pieces. The last icing on the cake can be a self-designed application in such a case. How to do something like this I want to show you today in this tutorial.
Applications are - depending on the chosen motif - also suitable for beginners and also another wonderful opportunity for meaningful remainder utilization. If this is your first application, it is advisable to try different stitches in advance on a piece of fabric, so that you will be satisfied with the result later. For the first try also simpler motives or ready-bought applications offer, which are sewn only in the outline.

For an application, you can choose any type of fabric that suits your desired design. For example, plush fabric is also conceivable for a teddy bear application.
Tip: If the main fabric is very thin, you should also work with embroidery fleece, especially in multi-layer applications or in thicker fabrics, so that the fabric does not warp and wrinkle.
Fabrics that tend to fray easily should be underlaid with a non-woven fabric before cutting. While this is not absolutely necessary with jersey fabrics, it does help with shaping. In addition, buttons, rhinestones and other special details can be attached as desired for ornaments. I mostly prepare the motif in advance and then choose suitable fabrics and accessories from my collection. This can often result during application.
Amount of material and the pattern
The amount of material is of course dependent on the subject. The pattern can be created individually. From simple square to complex compositions, everything is up to you. I would like to apply an application on a jersey fabric, which I would like to process later. I have no precise ideas in this regard - whether T-shirt, jacket or dress, it will find a suitable cut. The motive, however, has been haunting my mind for quite some time and I just recorded it once. Then I cut out all the pieces, which are made of different materials (with the dress in the middle was subsequently subdivided again).
Tip: Place the cut out templates on the fabrics and see if they fit. You may also need to consider a sample on the fabric.

Record cutting pattern
In the next step, I have attached to all fabrics on the back ironing fleece. Now I put my cut parts on the right (the "beautiful") fabric side and draw the outline with tailor's chalk.
Tip: For the face, the neck and the arm, I cut a bit more generously so that the other materials can then overlap a bit. That makes a nicer final image. I also immediately record the position of the eyes and mouth.
I would like to design the skirt part of the dress in 3D optics, so I divide the sides a bit more generously and leave the cutouts for my girl's hair away. Upper and lower edge I just cut off. For the legs, I extend a few inches upwards, as they come under the skirt, which remains open at the bottom. All other cuts are cut without "seam allowance", ie directly on the pattern. For the skirt part I sew two stripes of white and violet on the underside from the back - a little extra cute for my girl motif.

Now, with the help of my templates, I first place the layers that are supposed to be at the very bottom, in my case head, neck and arm. I iron this with double-sided ironing fleece, so that nothing can slip during sewing. If you are already practiced, you can fix your application pieces with pins. But it is easier with fleece.
Tip: I experimented with different stitches. In principle, what is allowed is what is allowed, provided that the substance to be applied is connected to the substrate. Many recommend simple straight stitching or a short zigzag stitch for applications. But I chose a decorative stitch here. With the machine, the application requires some practice, but the seams are beautifully even and it is much faster than by hand.
So now look the first applied motif parts on my fabric. In the next step, I applied the top and now follows my 3D skirt: I put the top edge in such a way that it closes on the right and left of the top. I stick the side edges along my basic motif, creating wrinkles in the skirt. Here I sew only along the sides and along the top edge. The lower skirt part with the tulle stays open, because I still want to put the legs underneath. These are again fixed with fleece and sewn. In addition, I spontaneously decided to attach a purple satin ribbon, because I do not like the transition from the upper and lower part.
Now only the hair is missing, which I also fix with fleece and put on. In the skirt part, I pay attention to the folding. Finally, eyes and mouth are embroidered - I did that by hand.
Before I continue with the decoration, I gently iron again on the whole subject.
For decoration
As you have already seen on my sketch, I would like to put a flower in my daughter's hair. For this I could now simply create a flower pattern and apply this as well as all other parts. But I want something special and would like to add another 3D effect, so I'll sew a flower and sew it on afterwards.
For this I need five material circles, which I record on the fabric and cut out. As a template, I use for the lid flap of a glue stick. The finished flower will be approximately the same size. Now I fold the circles in the middle and iron on them. Then I pin the rounding off with a thread (the initial piece can be a little longer or sewed well), pull on my thread and get an idea of what my flower will look like.
This is followed directly by the other petals until all five have been processed. Finally, I push everything together and knot the ends. My flower is ready. Since now in the middle of a fairly large hole has been created by the seam allowance, I cover this with a matching button from my fundus.Here you can see again the size comparison to the template. Now the flower with the button is only sewn on my application and my wish motif is ready!

If you are a happy owner of a cutting plotter, you can of course also cut your application professionally from a plotter. However, when creating the design in the file, remember that there should also be a slight overlap in the skin-colored fabric parts and that the legs have to be cut higher, as you can see a few millimeters more under the skirt.
