Despite their similarity to each other, the two materials have clear differences, which you absolutely must observe when choosing. Which tiles and bricks are recommended, you can find out here.

Effective roofing can withstand wind, weather, sun and other stresses for years. You are spoiled for choice, which form of roofing you use for your new building or a renovation. There are two main types from which you can choose your roof covering: roof tiles and stones.

These, in turn, are subdivided into different coatings which have a completely different effect on the roofing and have to be compared. If you yourself are about to take this important step, you should take a little time and consider the advantages and disadvantages of the two roof coverings.

Stones or bricks ">

The question roof tile or Dachstein is important since the advent of concrete. Before concrete became popular for roofing, only bricks in different variants were found on the roofs. Especially with a new building, it is interesting to know which material is recommended for roofing, so you can enjoy it for a long time.

The decision depends on the following points:

  • resistance
  • mass
  • price
  • design
different roofing

All of these influence the final recommendation as to which of the two materials you should use for roofing. In life cycle assessment, bricks are far superior to bricks because of their production. About 70 percent of energy is saved if you decide to use roof tiles, as the removal of clay and burning consume a lot of energy. Nevertheless, a comparison is necessary for the final decision.

Tip: When you become aware of roof tiles, it is not another form of roofing. The term roof tile describes a special rabbet design of Dachstein- and brick and can therefore be made of both materials.

tile

The roof tile is the centuries-old classic of roofing, which is still used today in the same way as before. Roof tiles are slabs of clay, which are shaped and fired at a temperature of 900 ° C to 1, 200 ° C. By firing, the clay hardens and can then be used as a brick.

Exactly this process ensures the characteristic color of the bricks and the possible uses as roofing. Due to the manufacturing process, the brick scores mainly in the design. The fired clay is extremely decorative and is still preferred by many people today.

Further advantages of the roof tiles are:

  • available in many shapes and colors
  • available in three different surface finishes
  • very easy
  • extremely resistant
  • weatherproof
  • breathable

Advantages and disadvantages

Especially the breathability makes roof tiles the preferred material, if you want a good indoor climate in an attic. With roof tiles often creates an unpleasant heat accumulation, especially if you are in the upper floors. At the same time, the low weight of the bricks allows a low cost of materials for the substructure of the roof. Although you need more wood than roof tiles, planning and implementation are much easier.

Unfortunately, the bricks tend to be blown from the roof by heavy winds. Even if these have been meticulously covered, the low weight is responsible for the fact that you always have to cover new tiles. Roof tiles are better for a further point than roof tiles. We are talking about low roof pitches and slender roofs. The fold allows you to lay the tiles extremely accurately so that they can be used even on the most difficult roof shapes.

roof tiles

Compared to bricks, roof tiles are not made of clay, but concrete . For this reason, the manufacturing process differs significantly from the roof tiles, as they are not fired. The production of the tiles is carried out in the following way.

  • Cement, sand and water are mixed
  • the mixture is poured into a mold
  • then this is dried at 60 ° C.
  • for this they are stored in heat chambers
  • Finally, the stones must harden for about four weeks

Due to this simple manufacturing method, the stones are much cheaper to buy than the roof tiles, depending on the manufacturer, around 25 to 35 percent. However, since the production costs for bricks are also cheaper due to modern technology, the cheapest roof tiles in the price approach more and more to the roof tiles.

The positive properties of the stones include:

  • extremely robust
  • resistant
  • impermeability
  • good insulation properties
  • effective sound insulation
  • are hardly removed by weather
  • Due to the size, fewer wooden slats are required for the roof substructure

Advantages and disadvantages

Roofstones are the choice for you due to the simple manufacturing process, if you are looking for a decorative and economical variant that combines all the advantages of roof tiles. In particular, the modern coatings allow effective use of the stones, since they are very resistant compared to the earlier variants and are no longer worn by weather conditions.

Despite the advantages, the roof tiles have a big disadvantage: weight. They are significantly heavier than bricks and for this reason higher demands are placed on the load on the roof truss. Good planning of the design with the applied weight is therefore particularly important.

Tip: If you live in a rainy region, you must check and clean the gutter at regular intervals when using roof tiles. Over the course of years, erosion of the concrete blocks can accumulate in it, which could lead to clogging of the gutter.

surface treatment

Another aspect in the selection of bricks is the surface treatment. Please note that these only apply to the bricks, not to the bricks, because they are not dependent on them because of the concrete. The surface treatment improves the properties of the tiles and can thus be better adapted to your needs.

If you've decided on roof tiles before, surface treatments may change your mind. The following treatment methods are used here.

Naturally

A natural clay brick will not be treated after firing. For this reason, they are available only in the well-known shade of red and compared to the glazed and engobed variants by 50 to 70 percent cheaper. Depending on the provider, you will receive these for less than 50 cents apiece. The biggest drawback of natural bricks is the lack of a protective layer against mosses, algae and dirt, which makes them unsightly in unfavorable areas. These are particularly well suited in urban areas without larger forest areas or tall trees in the immediate vicinity.

glaze

Glazed bricks have a big advantage over the natural variants. Due to the glaze neither moisture nor dirt can settle in the bricks and thus they remain much more stable . Even greening and mosses are prevented by the glaze, which makes them ideal for roofs that suffer from a lot of moisture and environmental influences.

A cosmetic disadvantage, however, is the fact that the glazed tiles shine permanently and reflect a lot of light, which is not even allowed in some areas, as they even dazzle in high temperatures. Depending on the model selection, the glaze looks very elegant at the same time, but has its price. Of all the tiles glazed are the most expensive and can easily cost around 1.50 euros each.

engobe

Engobos are similar to glazed tiles resistant to dirt, moss, green cover and moisture. In contrast to a glaze, an engobe burns additional clay onto the brick and thus compacts it . At the same time, it is possible to dye it by the addition of dyes, without the surface shines like glazes. Some manufacturers offer but brilliant variants. Well-suited are engobed bricks in natural areas . In terms of price, they resemble glazed bricks, but are ten percent more expensive or less expensive, depending on the manufacturer.

Of these types, the use of engobed bricks is the most recommended because they are much more versatile than natural and glazed bricks. Above all, the color selection should be mentioned here, because you can choose shiny, dull or particularly colorful. Although the price is much higher compared to natural tiles and roof tiles, if you want to go for bricks, you should opt for engobed ones.

Recommended manufacturers

A frequently overlooked point in the choice of roofing are the manufacturers of bricks and stones. The chosen manufacturer is crucial to the quality of the selected roofing, especially if they are established companies that have been in business for a long time.

These include:

  • Creaton
  • Braas
  • Roof tile works Nelskamp
  • Erlus
  • Wienerberger
  • Röben

It is recommended to purchase your roof tiles and bricks from these companies. Not only the quality of the manufacturer has a positive effect on your roofing, the maintenance is cheaper in the long run and associated with fewer problems. Nowadays, only in rare cases complete roofs are covered new, apart from a new building or a renovation, a reliable and established manufacturer is always preferable.

In this way, you can acquire suitable bricks and stones in an emergency, which also have a high quality. If you choose one of the recommended manufacturers, you should pay attention to the order quantity at the same time.

1. Preferably choose models that have been on the market for a long time and are therefore always available. Especially modern variants are often only available for a short time or suffer quickly from delivery bottlenecks. You do not have to worry about the "classics" of each manufacturer.

2. If you have a particular model in mind that is not part of the permanent offer, you should order a lot more and store the excess bricks and bricks. In this way, you always have a small amount of bricks available when you need to mend the roofing.

Note the amount of material on roof tiles

With these tips, you can easily select the right tile or tile. Of course, you can use the models of unknown manufacturers, which deliver a high quality . Nevertheless, it is especially recommended for a long time to favor the known manufacturers in order to guarantee the durability of the roofing.

As you have already realized, the final decision is up to your taste and budget. The materials do not give much in terms of efficiency and for this reason it is only recommended to choose high-quality bricks or stones.

Tip: When choosing tiles and bricks, be sure to keep in mind the development plan (B-plan) of your region or community to avoid potential problems with your neighbors or the Building Authority. The B-Plan regulates points such as the color, shape and coating of the roof covering and must be adhered to.
