Washing machine does not hurl properly! - What to do?

  • Location and loading
  • Control and cleaning of the lint filter
  • Control and cleaning of the pump
  • Clean drain hose

Whether in a single household or in a family with children, the washing machine is one of the most important large electrical appliances. If the device suddenly shows a defect and does not throw properly anymore, good advice is expensive. But it is not always necessary to buy a new machine, often the existing errors can be fixed on their own and significantly extend the life of the device.

At the latest when you get a big basket of laundry out of your machine and it is still soaking wet, it becomes clear that the machine is not hurling properly anymore. A shock, after all, the device is urgently needed. But do not worry, before you alert customer service or start looking for a new washing machine, you should do a self-healing. In many cases, the cause of the problem is harmless and can be fixed in a few simple steps. Save yourself expensive craftsman fees or a new purchase and repair the cause yourself.

There are several potential sources of error if your washing machine suddenly stops spinning properly. Most of these reasons are harmless and can be remedied by yourself. The most common mistakes are:

  • wrong loading or wrong location
  • Lint filter is clogged
  • Pump blocked by foreign matter
  • Drain hose is clogged

These mistakes are harmless and can be handled by you. But at the beginning is the cause research. With a front loader machine, you can easily watch during the spin cycle and already receive information on the source of the error. If your laundry gets wet from the machine, it does not necessarily mean that the unit will not spin properly, but that the water will not be pumped out. The result is, it stops in the machine during the spin cycle and the laundry does not dry despite proper revolutions.

Location and loading

The site
Often the error is not due to the machine itself, but to the faulty handling. Especially if the washing machine does not spin properly after a move or at a new parking space, you should check the location. It is important for the proper execution of the spin program that the machine has a secure location. If it is skewed or there is excessive movement during skidding, the program may be aborted and the laundry will remain wet.

With a spirit level you can easily test whether the location of your machine is suitable. If you notice bumps, but no move of your machine to another place is required. There are special pads that give your washing machine the necessary stability and ensure that it hurls again in the future to the end.

The loading
Each washing machine has a maximum capacity of laundry that it can absorb. If the laundry is dry, of course, the weight is much lower and until the capacity is reached, some laundry can be added to the drum. But there are garments, such as down jackets, which are heavily soaked in water and have many times their own weight when wet. This results in an overloading of the machine and the spin process is no longer sufficient to dry the laundry already.

When loading your washing machine, make sure you wash very absorbent and large items of clothing separately to avoid over-loading the machine. Even with normal laundry, you should pay attention to the maximum capacity of your device, because a constant over-loading of the washing machine ensures poor washing results.

Control and cleaning of the lint filter

Needed tools:

  • possibly screwdrivers
  • old sheets, absorbent cloths
  • Microfasertuch
  • lint-free towel

Each washing machine has a lint filter, lint is collected from the laundry, which would otherwise get stuck in the drum. As a result, the strainer should be cleaned every two years, but in everyday life this little work is often forgotten. A clogged sieve can be the cause if the machine does not spin properly anymore.

The removal

Drain water over the small hose

To remove the lint filter from the machine, first open the fluff door. This is usually located in the left lower corner of your device. Left and right you will find two levers that you can press towards the center. Now you can easily remove the sieve. If the flap of the machine is tight, you can help with a screwdriver and remove it. Place a thicker layer of old bed sheets or absorbent material on the floor beforehand, as it may leak residual water out of the manhole. Mostly you can see the dirt with the naked eye, but especially fine fluff settle in the mesh of the screen and interfere with the functionality of the machine.

The cleaning

You can safely clean the lint filter under running water. First, remove coarse dirt with your hands and the shower head, because lint and Co. are often caught in the fine meshes and adhere quite persistently. When the large pieces of dirt have been removed, pick up a cotton or microfibre cloth and carefully rub the outer side of the sieve. In this way, fine fluff are removed, which are often not visible to the naked eye.

Important: Do not use harsh cleaners, such as scouring cream, as they may damage the material.

After you have already roughly cleaned the sieve, the fine work is done. Put some water in the bath or sink and put in the strainer. Wait about 30 minutes and then brew the sieve carefully with the shower. Set the highest possible water pressure to rinse any residue from the mesh of the sieve. Take care not to bring any cleaning products into contact with the sieve, as this can cause lint to adhere better later. When the filter is completely cleaned, wipe it dry with a lint-free towel (cotton) and reinstall it in the existing hole.

Tip: Check the lint filter once a year to detect large amounts of dirt.

Control and cleaning of the pump

Needed tools:

  • old towels, rags
  • possibly toothbrush
  • flashlight

The pump of your washing machine is responsible for pumping out water. If there is a blockage by a foreign body, the pump can no longer do its job and the water stops in the machine. The result is that the spin cycle has no effect and the laundry even after the finished wash still dripping wet. A clogged pump does not need an electrician, you can easily remove debris yourself and give your machine a new lease of life.

Access
The actual pump is protected by the lint filter and an impeller, so you must first remove the strainer to reach any foreign objects. Pre-coat the floor with absorbent material or wipes as it may leak residual water . To do this, open the flap on the front of your machine and remove the lint filter. If you light a flashlight into the opening now you can see the impeller, which is in front of the pump.

The cleaning
This is where foreign objects that have fallen through the machine drum collect. With the fingers you can already remove the bulk of this rubbish. Whether buttons, large fluff or even small stones, remove completely all objects that have no business in the impeller. After you have removed all dirt from the impeller, you can replace the lint filter and close the flap.

Tip: If an item has caught, you can often easily remove it with an old toothbrush.

Clean drain hose

Needed tools:

  • screwdriver
  • mop bucket
  • degreasing detergent
  • Bathtub or large tub

If the lint filter and pump are not causing your machine to spin properly, the drain hose is another potential source of error. This can also be cleaned in no time by yourself.

Note: The drain hose is the hose that leads away from the washing machine into the bathtub or the drain. There, the water is removed after washing the machine. If there is a blockage here, the water can no longer run off and it builds up in the machine.

Peel off hose
Before you start working, please disconnect the power plug from the socket. Pull the machine out of the wall so you can easily access the back wall. First, use the screwdriver to remove the clamp that secures the hose to the drain. Put the now loose end of the hose in the bucket, as there is probably residual water in it, which would otherwise run on the floor. Now loosen the clamp on the washing machine and remove the hose. Hold the hose vertically in the bucket so that all water can run off.

The cleaning
For years, a thick layer of plaque accumulates inside the tube, threatening to form a plug. Unfortunately, a simple rinsing is usually not enough to completely clean the tube again. Put water in the bathtub or a large tub and add at least 20 ml of detergent . When choosing a detergent, make sure that it has a high fat and protein dissolving power. In the trade, there are also special protein remover, but a commercial dish soap is actually enough.

Ideally, leave the drain hose in the rinse aid lye overnight to dissolve the slag. If you can not afford this time, allow the tube to soak for at least five hours, as otherwise set plaques will not dissolve properly. After the exposure time, drain the water and unscrew the shower head from the water hose. Rinse the drain hose thoroughly, use the highest water pressure. Dirt and slag are now transported out of the hose, the cleaning is complete when only clear water through the hose flows.

Tip: For heavy soiling, a bottle brush from the trade helps to remove the slag.
