Wallpapering is a necessary form of freshening up your own living space and can be done in many different ways. In addition to the classic woodchip or paper wallpaper, there are numerous other types of wallpaper, including non-woven wallpaper. These are more robust, since the carrier material is not paper, but textile fibers and pulp, the nonwoven fiber. They increase durability and are much easier to install.

Non-woven wallpapers are becoming increasingly popular in German households because of their properties. The non-woven fibers used ensure that the wallpaper can be easily applied and removed, while they are durable, resistant to moisture and permeable. They regulate the indoor climate significantly more effectively than conventional paper wallpapers and are available in a variety of designs and finishes. Particularly advantageous their fire resistance, as they are difficult to ignite and at the same time they can be used in the bathroom or kitchen. The absolute highlight of non-woven wallpaper is its simplicity in wallpapering. In contrast to the paper or woodchip wallpaper, wallpaper with nonwoven fiber can be easily removed even after years.

Material and tools

In order to properly attach the non-woven wallpaper to the walls, you need a variety of materials and utensils:

Once you have the materials and tools handy, you can start preparing for wallpapering. This is divided into the following points:

1. Prepare room: remove all portable items from the room to be painted. Then cover the floor with painter's foil and fix it to the strips with the masking tape. In addition, the following parts of the room are covered with masking tape or foil covered:

• Window frames and boards

• Afford

Be sure to pack them thoroughly so that you do not mistakenly put glue on them, although this is not a problem with nonwoven wallpaper.

2. Remove wallpaper: before you can apply the new wallpaper, you must first remove the old one. To do this, prepare water with a dash of detergent (this helps against stubbornly sticking wallpaper) and soften it thoroughly. Then wear them with a spatula until completely removed.

3. Mending the wall surface: the wall is now repaired so that it can even carry the wallpaper. Proceed as follows:

• Treat cracks and holes with filler
• treat minor imperfections with repair spatula
• Stains caused by rust and water are treated with insulating primer

4. Balance wall surface for non-woven wallpaper : Non-woven wallpaper requires due to the fleece fibers a slightly different surface than conventional paper wallpaper. For this reason, you need deep ground, which optimizes the absorbency of the wall. This is applied as soon as the wall absorbs too much or too little moisture after removing the old wallpaper. Check this by spraying a little water on the wall:

• Water rolls off: not absorbent enough
• Water is absorbed quickly: too absorbent

After applying the foundation and leaving it to dry, apply additional wallpaper. This works as a primer and compensates for possible color differences.

Tip: if you just want to replace your old non-woven wallpaper with a new one, this is much easier than other wallpaper types. These just pull gently from top to bottom and you can attach the new wallpaper.

Wallpaper non-woven wallpaper: instructions

After you have finished all preparations, you can finally attach the non-woven wallpaper. This basically looks like normal wallpapering, only some points need to be changed in relation to the wallpaper used. The instruction:

Step 1: Start by wallpapering the windows and doors before finishing the free parts of the walls. Be sure to always paper with light, ie from the window or the door to the corner of the room.

Step 2: To work out the correct wallpaper size of the individual pieces in the windows, use this formula:

Wallpaper width - window reveal - overhang of 3 cm = distance

This calculation helps to calculate a straight reading for the individual pieces of wallpaper, as non-woven wallpaper is produced by default in the width of 53 cm. An example:

53 cm (wallpaper width) - 10 cm (window reveal) - 3 cm (supernatant) = 40 cm (distance)

That is, the remaining wallpaper is 40 cm from the soffit of the window, which facilitates the attachment of the remaining wallpaper, as you can thereby measure the other pieces of wallpaper better. Mark the distance with a pencil in a visible way from the ceiling to the floor as a line. Be sure to use the spirit level.

3rd step: Prepare the paste now. This is usually mixed and left to rest for some time.

4th step: After that, this part of the wall, which is directly adjacent to the window, is covered with paste from the ceiling to the floor. The higher your wall is, the more you should use a telescopic pole for this step. Do not forget to paste over and under the window. It is always a bit overcrowded, so one or two inches beyond the pencil mark pasted out, so you do not accidentally too little paste in one place.

5th step: Now the first track is laid on top with a projection directly on the ceiling or ceiling strip and smoothed to the upper window reveal with the wallpapering brush. Then press the wallpaper directly onto the top of the soffit and use the cutter to cut the nonwoven wallpaper horizontally to the end of the soffit. You will be amazed how well the non-woven wallpaper paste keeps the wallpaper in place.

Step 6: Smooth the wallpaper down to the bottom of the window reveal. Press the wallpaper against the vertical side of the soffit, but do not cut it off yet.

Step 7: As soon as you reach the lower end of the soffit, cut in horizontally as well and then smooth out the entire piece of wallpaper to the ground. Then remove the supernatant completely. Use a wallpapering spatula for each cut, as this will squeeze the wallpaper smooth and be used as a cutting mat.

Step 8 : Be sure to leave some overhang on the floor so you can press the wallpaper against the strip.

Step 9: Do the same on the other side of the window.

Step 10 : The sections of the wall above and below the window follow. To do this, first paste the top of the wall, paper up to the window reveal, press the wallpaper and cut off the supernatant.

Step 11: Make sure that the individual wallpaper pieces are always overlapped by 3 cm. After painting, the supernatant is simply cut off. So also under the window. This is called double stitching.

Step 12: Do the same for the door as for the windows. Depending on how high your door is, the use of a ladder is recommended.

Step 13: If your windows or doors are close to a corner, measure the distance to the adjacent wall beforehand using this value as a starting point. Add to this:

• soffit
• Overhang at the soffit (3 cm)
• Overhang on adjoining wall (3 cm)

Use this value to cut the wallpaper pieces.

Step 14: After you have papered the doors and windows, you can make the rest of the walls after cutting all the overhangs on the non-woven wallpaper on the ceiling and floor.

Step 15: The walls are always wallpapered on impact, so not overlapping. Here you have to pay extra attention to a straight mark. Here it can help if you paper together to avoid mistakes when positioning the wallpaper. Do not forget the protrusion on the ceiling and the bottom bar.

Step 16: After wallpapering the entire room, remove any overhangs and once again check that everything is in place. Since non-woven wallpaper does not soak itself and therefore does not have to dry on the wall, you can pull off the crooked sheets and glue them again.

Step 17: Finally clean up and enjoy the fresh wallpaper.
