Here you will again find a great way to process non-stretchy fabrics. A gym bag is a great tool for kindergarten, elementary school, but also recently for teens. Turnbeutel you see more and more in older people. The cult bags are practical and fashionable at the same time. It is individually designed and therefore unmistakable. In this guide you will learn how to sew a simple gym bag.

Difficulty level 2/5
(suitable for beginners)

Material costs 2/5

Time expenditure 1/5
(including pattern without extras about 1.5 hours)

material selection

This time I opted for a turquoise linen fabric. As a decorative element, I also use a baby cord fabric, which also reinforces the bottom of the turn bag and thus provides more stability. As a special eye-catcher, I have also created cords in bright neon orange red, which will later serve as a carrier.

Amount of material and the cut

The cut is very simple. For the gym bag you only need a rectangular piece of fabric made of a slightly stronger, non-stretchable fabric measuring 40 cm x 100 cm. Of course, you can sew the gym bag larger or smaller - just as you like. If you, like me, still want to use a decorative fabric, this should have the same width and about half the height. In my case, 40 cm x 50 cm. Of course, the height can vary depending on your taste.

When using motif fabrics, always pay attention to which side up the two pieces are sewn together so that the subject is then not upside down! In addition, I work in this guide in the material break, so you should make each two rectangles with 40 cm x 50.7 cm (including seam allowance) for the base fabric and two rectangles each with 20 cm x 25.7 cm (including seam allowance) for the decoration fabric. These are sewn together so that the two motif sides "on the ground" come together. In further processing, the seams are then treated according to the material breaks.

cut out

You need:

  • 1x basic cut gym bag 40 cm x 100 cm (40 cm x 50 cm in the material break)
  • 1x reinforcement 40 cm x 50 cm (40 cm x 25 cm in the material break)
  • The seam allowances are already included.
  • In addition, you need 2 cords with about 160 cm in length.

Tip: If you want, you can attach applications directly after cutting or embroider the fabrics. Especially as a gym bag for kindergarten or school, the attachment of the name of the child offers. But this can also be done - as needed - in a later step. For example, if you want to embroider the name just above the decoration part, this should happen only after the decorative fabric has been applied so that the seam line is straight underneath.

Sew gymnastic bag

First, all fabric parts are finished!

Then iron in each case about 1 cm of the decorative fabric at the upper edges inwards, places the resulting edges on each other and iron once again the material break beautiful.

For the larger rectangle, iron the short sides in each case by about one cm inwards, fold them over again, iron them once more and stitch them with a simple straight stitch. Then the top edges are also placed next to each other and the material break is beautifully sewn.

Now it opens the decoration fabric and sets the material break of the "inner part" (Actually, it is not an inner part, but goes beyond that, but for the sake of simplicity, I will always use the term "inner part" for the turquoise fabric) exactly on the U-shaped edge décor fabric.

Then fold the fabric upwards and put it on both sides. In order not to use too many fabric layers, you can put a piece of cardboard or your cutting mat between the first two and the other two layers. Then the decoration fabric is sewn on the "inner part". I did this with two straight stitches.

In the next step, measure each of the "inner part" from above 8 cm and iron the fabrics inwards, so that a beautiful ironing edge is formed. On one side measure 2.5 cm on both sides from below and mark them. Then unfold the two ends again, put the beautiful sides right to right on each other, put these firmly and sew each of the crease to the markings.

A 45 degree angle is now created at the lower corners and a triangle is cut off exactly at the seam end.

Now is ironed

Next, first iron a seam allowance, turn the fabric, and also iron the second side up, including the remaining 7 cm at the top, to create a nice straight edge. The same is done on the other side.

Now put one side of the 7 cm down and iron the top edge, turn the gym bag, also fold down the other side of the 8 cm and iron again the top edge. Both upper edges should now lie flush on each other. Two arches have now been created on the side, which will serve as a drawstring for the cords. For this purpose, the folded 7 cm are then sewn around once at a distance of about 4cm from the top edge on the other side. Make sure that the seams of the edges meet exactly at the transitions. Here you can see again the opening for the drawstring.

drawstring

Now one drawstring can be pulled in from the left and from the right. You can either attach a large safety pin to a cord end or tie it to a ballpoint pen and push it through the drawstring. You start on one side and pull the cord around once. Then you start on the other side and pull the second cord around once again. Make sure the ends of the cords are the same length on both sides. If this is not the case, you can now adjust it (so drag it around until everything is right and not just cut!).

final

You have almost done it. You are almost done. Now only the right and left of the cord ends have to be inserted through the openings at the corners. You can also reach into the pocket from the inside and pull the cord ends in through the holes.

Now turn the bag over to the left so that the ends of the cord protrude into the corners. So that the cords do not open, you can also knot them to play it safe. Now the corners only have to be sewn, so that the cords can not slip out. For this I first quilted at a distance of about 1.5 cm from the edge of the fabric with a simple straight stitch and then sewed over it twice more narrow-edged with a zig-zag stitch.

3, 2, 1 ... done!

Now you just have to turn the gym bag over and the good piece is ready!

variations

You can process fabric remnants into a patchwork, from which you then cut the basic cut, beautify the fabric pieces with appliqués or set highlights with beautiful decorative stitches or embroidery. Have fun trying it!

Quick Guide:

  1. Create cut (seam allowance is already included)
  2. Cut and decorate if necessary
  3. Iron edges, stitch, decorate decoration fabric on "inner part"
  4. Attach markings and stitch
  5. Prepare drawstring and sew
  6. Cut off lower corners, thread in cords and sew on
  7. Turning - ready!
