Space and efficiency in the laundry room - a washing machine only really belongs to a washing machine, if enough space is available. One way to gain space is to put the dryer on the washing machine. In this guide you will learn everything you need to know to stack up the dryer and the washing machine.

More comfort for everyone

The technology of white devices has not only made enormous progress in recent years, the devices have also become much cheaper. In addition, favorable financing offers have also contributed to the fact that everyone today can afford a whole collection of large electrical helpers in the household. But in many homes there is a limiting factor that can limit the purchase of too many devices: the place. No one wants to do without a washing machine today. However, the tumble dryer is of minor importance to many, not least because of the seemingly lack of space. But there are solutions for that.

To the devices

With pressure and chemistry for clean laundry

Although a washing machine and a dryer are optically similar devices, they differ technically from each other considerably. A washing machine works with temperature, pressure and detergents to reliably remove soiling from the laundry. This requires many components that also have to withstand high loads. The contaminants are thermally-chemically dissolved in the washing machine and then washed out with water and pressure. This pressure is generated in a washing machine by high rotational speeds. The higher the centrifugal force with which the laundry is moved when spinning in the drum, the more thoroughly the water is thrown out. At the same time, the laundry in the drum generates at the latest when spinning a strong imbalance, which must be intercepted. For this purpose, concrete weights are integrated in the washing machine, which effectively prevent walking and jumping.

Warm air makes it dry

On the other hand, high speeds are not necessary with the tumble dryer, on the contrary. Instead of pressing the laundry against the drum wall, the textiles should fall as vertically as possible in the dryer. This creates the longest path in the drum, which is achieved only by a slow rotation. A permanent warm air stream carries the moisture out of the laundry. Depending on whether an exhaust air dryer or a condenser dryer is available, the moisture is led to the outside via the exhaust air hose or collected in a container. Lower rotational speeds produce less imbalance, eliminating the concrete weights of a dryer. Also, dryers have smaller electric motors and some components - such as the water pump - less than a washing machine. It follows: dryers are basically much lighter than a washing machine. You can go by a difference in weight of 30-50%.

Simply stacking is not possible

From the different weights follows the logical conclusion that when stacking the washer and dryer, the heavier device basically belongs down. Although a dryer also swings and rotates a bit, this is not a comparison to the forces that act on a washing machine. If the washing machine were standing on top of the dryer, it would jump down during the first wash and inevitably be destroyed. But the cover of a washing machine offers by far not enough stable base area even for a light tumble dryer.

Side hiking protection indispensable

To ensure that the dryer is really stable on a washing machine, it must be protected against lateral movement. In addition the trade offers numerous interesting solutions. Often, an additional drawer plate is integrated into this finished frame. This facilitates the transfer of the laundry from the washing machine into the dryer considerably. They are stable enough for all manufacturers that the full laundry basket can be placed on them.

These finished solutions are called "connection plate" or "intermediate frame". They have in common that they are firmly mounted on the lid of the washing machine. For this purpose, the lid of the washing machine is removed, pierced at four holes provided and screwed with studs to the connection plate. The lid on a washing machine is held firmly by two small screws on the back. When these are released, the lid is first pushed backwards and then lifted. For the holes, most finished solutions have a paper template attached. In the assembly instructions but are usually the exact dimensions also again. If that too is missing, the connecting plate must be precisely measured with ruler and plastic painter and the drill holes transferred to the plate. These prefabricated solutions cost about 30-60 euros. The high price is due to the heavy execution. The frame must be able to withstand a lot.

If you do not want to drill

Boring expensive electrical appliances is not for everyone. With a little manual skill and expertise you can also help with a DIY frame. Properly engineered, a self-made frame can provide sufficient stability. Nevertheless, we would like to advise you on a finished part, as it gives you a tested solution for stacking your white devices.

You need for the frame:

  • 4 strong planks about 60 inches long, 15 inches wide and at least 2.5 inches thick
  • two slats, about 60 centimeters long (note: take only solid wood, chipboard is not suitable here)
  • 4 wide angles, thigh measurement about 5-10 centimeters, width 10 centimeters, three holes per side
  • 26 wood screws, 2 inches; Length 0.5 mm thickness
  • jigsaw
  • spirit level
  • 2x anti-vibration mat

The washing machine should stand on an anti-vibration mat. This considerably reduces the noise of a washing machine and contributes to its stability. In addition, she must be exactly in Libra. Adjust the machine on the swivel feet until it is exactly level using the spirit level.

Measure the top plate of your washing machine exactly. Cut two of the planks exactly to the dimension of the longer side. Cut the other two planks and the batten exactly to the dimension of the shorter side. Now screw the angles OUTSIDE to the frame. If you screw the angles in, the metal could scratch your equipment. Now screw the slats parallel to each other in the frame. Proceed in such a way that the slats are not screwed down to the area of the feet of the tumble dryer. Now place the anti-vibration mat on the washing machine. Then on is the frame.

With the help of a helper, put the tumble dryer on the washing machine. The dryer must also stand exactly straight. Check it with the balance and adjust with the swivel feet if necessary. If there is still some air between the white devices and the frame, you can use cardboard to make up for the gap. This effectively prevents scratching.

You can get a slightly more elegant and safe version if you install a precisely measured plate instead of the slats. Where the dryer has its feet you can drill exact holes into the plate with the help of a drill bit. If the feet then fit exactly in the holes, you have built a particularly stable solution.

Check the screws regularly to see if they have loosened. This is inevitable in the vibrations during the washing process. If the screws have ripped out and can no longer be turned firmly, you must move the angles and screw them in again. If you want to connect the planks with through-bolts, use round head screws with large washers. These screws with the round heads inside. This looks funny, but you avoid scratches and bumps on the devices. You still have to cover the heads with the help of damping tape. Do not forget to cap the studs on the outside. They prevent injuries.

Do it yourself cheaper ">

Washing machines have also undergone interesting developments in recent years. The latest innovation is washing machines, which are supposed to be able to achieve a particularly clean, gentle and energy-efficient cleaning performance with ultrasound. This technique sounds very fascinating, but has not yet prevailed on the market. If the replacement is pending, ask the seller of your choice for these solutions. Because the most expensive part of the washing process is neither the machine nor the detergent, but only the electric current.

Tips for quick readers
