Before celebrations, I always think of the appropriate decoration. Mostly we have theme parties. Whether it's Christmas or the Disney children's birthday - there are always many ways to spice things up with decorations. Among other things, with a color-coordinated tablecloth. All it takes is some cloth and a little bit of time and I can make that special extra.

In this guide you will learn how to sew a beautifully edged tablecloth . The corners are also sewn as corner letters . So it looks nice from both sides and you also have the opportunity to sew them with two layers of fabric and use them as a table cloth.

Material and preparation

Difficulty level 2/5
(with this instruction for tablecloth sewing also suitable for beginners)

Material costs 1/5
(The cost of the tablecloth can vary greatly depending on the material, but in principle are also very cheap)

Time expenditure 2/5
(since this manual has to be implemented for each corner, so four times, you have to expect about 1h)

The material selection

To sew a tablecloth, thinner, non-stretchable fabrics such as cotton weave are best. With a bit of practice, patience and the right presser foot, you can also sew satin and other slippery fabrics. Thicker fabrics are not suitable because the seams would apply too much.

The amount of material and size

The size of the tablecloth should be chosen so that at least 20 cm are hanging on each side. Measure your table and calculate the desired length per side. So if your table is 60 x 80 cm, the tablecloth should be at least 100 x 120 cm . For round tables, either sew a round tablecloth or calculate the 40 cm for a square tablecloth. For oval (rounded) tables, measure the widest points.

Sewing a tablecloth with a border

In my tutorial I sew not a complete tablecloth, but only a corner, because the other three corners are sewn in the same way and it is clearer with smaller pieces of fabric to show something. But I always write about how to sew the entire tablecloth.

Cut the edge strips into the desired final size in a double layer in the desired final width, including approx. 1 cm seam allowances . My margin should be about 3 cm wide, so I add 1 cm seam allowance and double to 8 cm . Also in the length of the edge strips should protrude on each side by this length. For clarity, I take about 10 cm per side. If your tablecloth is planned with 100 cm, the two edge strips for this side should be at least 116 cm long.

preparation

Preparation is everything. First, I mark at each corner a distance for the seam allowances . In my case, each 1 cm.

In addition, I mark both the main fabric and the edge strip the middle .

I put both fabrics right to right (ie with the "nice" sides together) and stick both layers with pins .

Sewing a tablecloth

I am approaching from one corner mark to another and I am beginning to notice.

Here it pays off to work exactly, so that the result is beautiful. Then I turn my piece of fabric 90 degrees and put it back at the middle mark, at the beginning and end and if desired between them.

I make sure that I pierce exactly in the first seam end and not along seam allowance and the other edge strips. I fold the corner to the tip, so that the edge strips come to lie edge-to-edge on each other and put me the seam allowance with a pin firmly, so that nothing slips.

With a ruler I draw a diagonal, which coincides with the breaking edge of the main material.

I sew this marker along. At the same time, I make sure that I start sewing again exactly at the seam end and do not bring the previous seam allowance with me. Then I cut the seam allowances of the edge strips back to about 1 cm .

I open the tablecloth and turn it so that the left side (with the seam allowances) points upwards and cut off the corner of the main fabric at a distance of about 2 mm from the seam. Then I iron out the seam allowances.

If this is done on all four corners, the edge trim is completely sewn on and I can start sewing the corners, so that everything looks nice and clean. For the corner letters I draw two auxiliary lines, which are measured once with 1 cm and once with 4 cm distance to the edge.

I iron around the first 1 cm, then the other 3 cm .

I open the creases on the corner again and turn the tablecloth.

I fold the corner down so that the top intersection is at the point where the main and the edge meet. Another good indicator is the other creases that run into each other.

Here I iron once firmly on the new upper bow edge.

I open it up again and put the corner right to right together again to the point so that the new fold is halved and mark it with a pin .

At this line is now sewn, and again exactly from seam allowance to seam allowance. The beginning and the end are stitched together so that nothing can be solved.

WATCH OUT!

In the following picture, the seam is sewn to the edge and I had to split the seam within the seam allowance again! Stop at the seam allowance (top line)!

Then I cut back the seam allowance to about 1 cm and then I also tilt the top corner off.

I push the corner to the left until the seam is centered in front of me and iron the seam allowances apart.

Now my corner is ready to turn . I shape the corner nicely and iron it over.

I make sure that the edge strip is also correct on the fabric back. The seam allowance should be turned inwards and the strip should extend equally far over the main fabric on both sides. With larger tablecloths it is certainly helpful to hold the seam allowances in position with pins .

WATCH OUT!

The next step will follow only when all four corners are prepared up to here and also all sides are folded and pinned!

I once quilt around tight-edged and catch the beginning and end well. For durability, I like to use a triple straight stitch, especially for larger tablecloths. With a tablecloth for a children's table but also a simple straight stitch.

And now my new tablecloth is ready and ready!
