  • Paint doors: Instructions

Doors are essential for humans. They provide privacy, security and add to the ambience within your own four walls. Over the years of use doors are heavily used and discolored due to the constant contact in some places. If your door is unsightly or has a damaged surface, it's time for you to paint it.

Paint doors is one of the tasks that is mainly for homeowners. While sub-tenants rarely have to take this step, this step in a home is in most cases at some point. A lacquered door provides a pleasant living environment and is easy to handle, even if you do not have knowledge in this area. The big advantage of this project is the simple implementation, which requires only a little time and care. It also depends on the selection of the paint, which is not only used for the design of the door, but also protects the wood from external influences.

Material and tools

In order for you to be able to paint your doors in a relaxed and effective way, you need the right tool and the right materials to make your door shine in a fresh shade of color. The new paint protects the delicate wood of the door from shock, dirt and moisture, increasing its life and reducing the cost of purchasing a new one. The following materials and tools help to include costs:

  • 2 hinged bucks or fixed bucks, alternatively chairs or tables, which were covered with painter foil
  • Painters film
  • Cardboard or carpet residues in the size of the support surface
  • Sandpaper in grits 100 and 240
  • abrasive fleece
  • silicone-free and adhesive tack cloth
  • flat brush
  • Paint roller made of foam in fine design
  • paint bucket
  • screwdriver
  • matching lacquer and precoat (explained in detail below)
  • screwdriver

If there are dents, scratches or chipped wood in the surface, you should also use an elastic filler, for example based on polyester. A big advantage of the independent painting of the doors are the low costs, as many do-it-yourselfers have their home appliances. In addition, you can still use some of the materials from previous painting, except of course the color.

Paints and varnishes

The right paint is crucial for success when painting doors. Only with the right color and quantity can you effectively paint your door without encountering problems that delay the entire process. First of all, you have to compare the different types of lacquer:

1. Acrylic varnish: solvent-free, water-based, eco-friendly, less impact resistant, suitable for recoating acrylic varnish. Cost: 1 L for 15 - 20 Euro

2. Synthetic resin paint: not solvent-free, environmentally damaging, impact-resistant, well suited for outdoor use, as extremely robust. Cost: 1 L for 10 - 15 Euro

3. Thick film glaze : not really a varnish, but a glaze to paint over natural wood species. Is therefore used for wooden doors that are not painted. Thick-layer glaze is offered especially for individual types of wood, from rosewood to ebony to birch. The grain is visible after application and the wood is also maintained by the glaze. Cost: 1 L for 15 - 30 euros

When choosing the color you should be aware that acrylic paints are usually only available in white, while synthetic resin based paints are available in many different shades. Although there is acrylic paint in blue, black or other colors, but these paints are more expensive compared to the standard white; often even twice that. How much paint you need for your door, you can determine by the dimensions. Each manufacturer indicates for how many square meters of surface the color is suitable. This means that you only have to calculate the surface area of your door to determine the required quantity. The formula for this is:

  • Length of the door in meters x width of the door in meters = area in square meters

This bill is very simple, but here is an example of a door in the classic dimensions of 198.5 cm in length and 61 cm in width. Of course, these have to be converted into meters before the bill:

  • 1, 985 mx 0.61 m = 1, 21 m²

This means that this door needs enough paint for 1.21 m² to paint one side. You take this value twice, because a door has two sides. Thus, you come to a required amount of paint, which must be sufficient for 2.42 m². On average, 350 to 400 ml of paint suffice for 4 m². Thus, you come for a door with less than 10 euros for the paint. This is also the case with the glaze. Before you apply the paint, you must first use a precoat. These are available for acrylic and synthetic resin coatings and serve as a primer. The cost is about 15 euros for a liter.

preparation

After choosing a color, you must prepare the door and the workplace. Do the following:

  • choose a room that is well ventilated and dust free
  • place the bucks in the room, preferably on a painter's tarpaulin
  • Now put the cardboard or carpet on the bucks to protect the door
  • Cover the bucks with painter's tarpaulin as well
  • then lift the door off its hinges; this is best done in pairs
  • Now put the door on the bucks
  • then unscrew the handle, signs and possible grids
  • Now take the sandpaper (grit 100) and roughen the entire surface
  • this frees the door from possible bumps and increases the adhesion of the fresh paint

  • Be careful, but do not use too much force to avoid damaging the wood underneath the paint
  • For the corners and profiles of a cassette door, use the sanding fleece
  • If your door is veneered, you must be extra careful as veneers are very delicate
  • then fill holes, splinters or dents with putty and let them dry; then also roast

  • Finally, sweep the door and wipe it with the dust cloth
  • Now you can paint your doors

Paint doors: Instructions

Preparation is important so you can paint your doors without the wood having to suffer from an old coat of paint. It retains this and can easily absorb the paint. The instructions for painting the doors are as follows:

Step 1: Start by priming doors. For this, prepare the primer and start with the door edges on the sides. These are painted with the flat brush and excess paint wiped with a clean cloth to avoid double edges. They work from outside to inside.

Step 2: Then follow the large areas of the door, which you paint with the paint roller. For this, follow the following pattern:

  • Apply vertical paint
  • distribute diagonally
  • finish vertically

Properly and quickly, because priming takes about 20 minutes to dry. It is recommended to paint thinly and apply two coats of primer in a row.

Step 3: Allow to dry and then sandpaper (grit size 240) and sanding fleece. Sweep and wipe with a dust cloth.

Step 4: Now you can paint the doors. To do this, prepare your color and follow this sequence as for the primer:

  • Edges of the door sides with flat brush
  • Corners and profiles with flat brush
  • remaining area with paint roller

Step 5: The door paint must dry after painting the doors. In doing so, you orient yourself to the specifications of the respective manufacturer. After ten minutes you should examine the door for paint runners and noses and dab them carefully so that you do not have to be satisfied with unsightly paint residues after painting the doors.

Step 6: After one side has dried, turn the door, work this side and let it dry as well. Then reinstall the individual components such as the handle and hook in the door.

Tip: you can dispense with the primer if you use the same type of lacquer that was previously used for the door. That means, if you want to apply acrylic lacquer to acrylic lacquer, you just have to roughen; if you do not know what the previous paint is, priming is necessary in any case.
