Apply coating plaster on walls and ceilings

Before applying the coating you should bear in mind that this product is very difficult to remove. So if you want to beautify the walls or ceilings with roller trim as a tenant, consider well how long you still live there, because under certain circumstances, the landlord is the extract on the removal of the plaster. If you only want to decorate one wall, you can instead hang a large OSB panel and roll it up. Then you only have the dowel holes that you have to close again and not the extreme work of freeing the wall from the rolling plaster.

1. Preparations

As is often the case, even when applying a plaster coating, the preparations are almost more time-consuming than the work itself. If the wall used to be covered with a wallpaper or woodchip, the wall covering must be removed completely clean. Simply succeed with lukewarm water with detergent, which is generously applied with the tassel on the wall. Depending on the type of old wallpaper can be rolled with a needle roller small damage in the surface. This allows the mixture of water and detergent to penetrate better and the wallpaper is easier to peel off. With a spatula you have to scrape off the wallpaper. Unfortunately, this must be done absolutely clean and without residue. Every little shred of the wallpaper would be ugly after processing the rolling plaster.

Here is a detailed guide with tips for removing old wallpaper: peel wallpaper

You should first remove all outlet covers, light switch covers and frame. If you do not need power while working in the room, you should turn off the fuse in the control box. Even if the sockets are taped with foil, the moisture with the painter roller may still get into the can and cause a short circuit or be dangerous to the home improvement.

If the ceiling is treated with plaster, the entire walls should be covered with foil. If you paint a wall with rolling plaster inside, you should tape the connection to the ceiling. It looks particularly good when you leave between ceiling and wall about two to three inches without brushing.

Tip: You can paint this shadow gap between wall and ceiling very well with a matching wall paint. For example, if you want to work the rolling plaster in a darker shade, you should paint this edge in the color of the ceiling. With a light color on the wall, a contrasting color is also well suited as an optical interruption between the ceiling and the wall. Just put a few paint samples on the wall and step back to judge the result.

Glue the window and door frames clean with a painter's crepe. Maybe you should tense some foil in front of the windows. Depending on how clean you work, the room door should also be covered. During cleaning, the plaster can scratch the ground because of its sand-like structural elements, so you should make the cleaning in advance by good masking and masking unnecessary. On the floor you should lay out painter fleece. Although foil is also suitable for protecting the floor, it also slides on it very easily.

2. Mending the walls

Dents or damage in the wall or ceiling will later still be visible in the thin brushed plaster that is applied inside. So before you can process the rolling plaster, the surfaces must first be prepared cleanly and precisely. Small damage, such as old dowel holes you can repair with a little repair spatula from the tube. Major damage can be repaired well with a touch of putty and a smoothing board. Again and again, use a straight board to pull over the repaired surfaces to remove any protruding plaster residue.

Tip: If there is still an old dowel in a hole, turn an old screw hook into the dowel and then pull it out. Should it still not solve, you can lever out the screw hook with the water pump pliers. To do this, place a small piece of wood on the edge of the hole and rest the pliers on it. Without the piece of wood you would break an even bigger hole in the wall.

If you want to spread a light shade on a wall that was previously very dark or patterned, you should additionally paint a wall inside with a favorable white wall paint. The wall paint should be diluted with a little water before processing. Dark colors can otherwise show through easily and the coating could later be spotty.

If there are cracks in the old plaster, you should check how big they are. From a thickness of about two millimeters and a length of over 20 centimeters, you should not only fill this but also cover it with a repair tape. In the hardware stores there are many good variants. But you should make sure that this repair fabric is moisture resistant, so it can not be detached from the wet plaster.

3. Priming

In order for the roller plaster to last well on a absorbent surface such as a plasterboard ceiling or a plastered wall, a deep primer or primer is applied before applying the plaster. This ensures that the rolling plaster is not immediately absorbed by the wall and can dry well. Without a primer, it could happen that after drying large areas of the rolling plaster are repelled and trickle down like sand.

Most primers are applied with the puff. Depending on the manufacturer, the deep background is often liquid like water. Do not be fooled by the almost colorless substance, as it may dry after drying on the floor or other surfaces. Therefore, you should not process the depth reason until you have already covered everything in the room in question.

Tip: If other materials on the walls or ceilings are to be painted with the same decor, the primer also helps. Wood or metal can be coated with the deep ground similar to the wall. In this way you can, for example, decorate the roller shutter box or a veneer on the wall with the coating plaster.

4. Mix coating

When purchasing a coating, you must ensure that this product can be processed inside. You should choose a low-odor product. Also interesting is the proportion of marble in the rolling plaster. However, there are also products that contain different sized particles of plastic instead of marble or coarse sand. These are particularly suitable for walls and ceilings in the bathroom or in the kitchen, but are not as breathable as comparable permeable products.

Most products are sold today in a bucket. However, a few are still in powder form in sacks. You then have to mix these with water yourself. However, the rolling plaster in the bucket must also be stirred well, since the individual components of the product separate by the service life. If possible, the speed of the drill should be controlled slightly down when working with the agitator.

If the roller coaster is still too strong after stirring to apply it well with the roller, you can dilute most products with a little water. Before doing so, please read the instructions in the instructions before recommending what the manufacturer in question recommends. Also, start with a cautious amount of half a glass of water, so that the coating does not become too thin for you.

Tip: Rolling plaster can usually be customized with a conventional tinting color according to your wishes. To avoid rejection, it is recommended to use products from the same manufacturer. First, apply only a small amount of tinting ink to the rolling plaster and stir well with the drill and the mixing pad. Some manufacturers offer color pigments in powder form, which are added to the plaster. Always pay attention to the recommendations of the manufacturers and follow them.

5. Apply

The painter roll should be lightly misted with some clear water to make it absorbent. Easier and cleaner work with a telescopic pole on the painter's roll. This allows you to stroke the complete web from top to bottom without having to pull off. This will give you a harmonious picture later, which looks as if it had been worked by a professional. Immerse the roller horizontally lightly in the rolling plaster and push it up on the scraper. So the role rotates a bit and you can immerse the remaining pages. When the roll is completely wet with roller coating, it is placed on the wall or ceiling. Always work the wall in narrow strips that are barely wider than the roller itself.

6. Reworking

If you want to incorporate a certain texture or pattern in the rolling plaster, this should be done within a few minutes of application. Divide the room so that you have smaller areas that you can work off one after another before they dry out. Depending on how long the fibers of the used painting roller are, you automatically get a special structure into the wall surface.

Longer fibers cause a rather rough pattern and shorter fibers produce a smoother surface. With special rollers, on which a structure or a special pattern are worked out, you can provide the wet rolling plaster with a different surface. These rolls are often made of smooth rubber, but can also be made by yourself.

Tip: If you put a plastic bag over a painter's roll and, for example, loop rubber bands over it, you will get either stripes or a restless diamond pattern, depending on the arrangement of the rubber bands. This pattern is guaranteed to have nobody else in the neighborhood on its wall except you. With a smooth roll of rubber, the rolling plaster is particularly level and noble. However, then the wall should have been prepared accordingly well, otherwise you will see every little dent.
