Help - knit stockings! Experienced sock knitters are often admired. It seems quite complicated to knit a structure that adapts to our foot shape. Especially the instructions for heels-knitting often show up as a book with seven seals. But do not worry - if you do not feel that way or just do not feel like cumbersome mesh counting, knitting stockings does not have to be taboo for a long time. You can also knit well fitting stockings without a heel. Just knit spiral stockings in the future. With this guide you will quickly become a stocking knit professional!

Knitting stockings - instructions

Material and preparation

This instruction is designed for 4-ply stocking yarn with a running length of approx. 400 - 425 m / 100 g. From a ball you can knit a pair of spiral stockings for one adult or several pairs for tiny feet. Use a needle size 2.5 mm thick. If you knit very tightly, you can knit with slightly thicker needles (3.0mm) and if you tend to knit more loosely, the thinner needles (2.0mm) will fit perfectly.

General knitting instructions

Spiral socks are worked from the top over the foot and the heel up to the cuffs. A cumbersome work on the heel is eliminated and still the stockings sit perfectly on the foot afterwards.

Increases on the toe

Here's how it works: knit 1 stitch on the right. Now, with the left needle, grasp the stitch under the straight knit stitch from the back to the front. Knit the stitch straight on the needle to the right.

Knit round 1: 8 stitches without increments

Round 2: work an increase for each stitch, doubling the number of stitches = 16 stitches

Round 3: Knit without increases

Round 4: work on every other stitch = 24 stitches
Spread the stitches evenly on 4 needles before continuing to knit.

Round 5 and Round 6: knit without increases

Round 7: Work on every third stitch = 32 stitches (for baby stockings, there are no increases left)

Round 8 and Round 9: knit without increases

Round 10: Work on every fourth stitch = 40 stitches

Round 11 to Round 13: Knit without increases

Round 14: Work on every fifth stitch = 48 stitches

Round 15 to Round 17: knit without increases

Round 18: Work on every sixth stitch = 56 stitches

Round 19 and Round 20: knit without increases

Round 21: Work on every seventh stitch = 64 stitches

Work the increase rounds until you have reached the complete number of stitches according to the table above.

Knit spiral pattern

The spiral pattern has a stitch repeat of 8 stitches. Therefore, the total number of stitches in a round should always be divisible by 8.

  • Start of a round: the first stitch on needle 1
  • End of a round: the last stitch on needle 4

Round 1 - 4: * Knit 4 stitches on the right, knit 4 stitches on the left * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of needle 4

Round 5 - 8: * Knit 1 stitch on the left, knit 4 stitches on the right, knit 3 stitches on the left * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of needle 4

Round 9 - 12: * Knit 2 sts left, knit 4 sts on the right, knit 2 sts left * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of needle 4

Round 13 - 16: * Knit 3 stitches on the left, knit 4 stitches on the right, knit 1 stitch on the left * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of pin 4

Round 17-20: Knit 4 stitches on the left, knit 4 stitches on the right. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of pin 4

Round 21 - 24: * Work 1 stitch on the right, knit 4 stitches on the left, knit 3 stitches on the right * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of pin 4

Round 25 - 28: * Knit 2 stitches on the right, knit 4 stitches on the left, knit 2 stitches on the right * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of pin 4

Round 29 - 32: * Knit 3 stitches on the right, knit 4 stitches on the left, knit 1 stitch on the right * Repeat this * pattern set until you reach the end of pin 4

From here, the pattern starts again in round 1. On the whole 4 stitches appear on the right, 4 stitches on the left. This muser sequence is shifted by one stitch every 4th round. This creates a pattern spiral that wraps around the entire stocking and ensures that the stocking becomes stretchy and snuggles well around the foot and feet.

Step-by-Step Guide

Garter lace: The garter lace starts the same for every size. Throw on 8 stitches (3 stitches - 3 stitches - 2 stitches) on 3 needles. First knit one round of right-hand stitches with these 8 stitches. The other stocking lace is knit smooth right. Knit in rounds according to the increase instructions above until you reach the desired number of stitches. A marking thread between needle 1 and needle 4 (black in the picture) helps to keep the orientation. There are two rounds of right-hand stitches at the end of the stocking lace.

From now on knitting continues in the spiral pattern. Repeat round 1 to round 32 of the Spiral Pattern Guide. Continue knitting in this pattern until the entire stocking length is reached. Unlock the stitches on all 4 needles and the first knit sock is on. The second stocking is also knitted and you can look forward to a pair of wonderful stockings.

Variety: ajour pattern

The simple spiral pattern is too boring for you ">

1 simple cover: lift 1 stitch as if you would like to knit it off to the right. Now knit the next stitch on the right and pull the previously lifted stitch over this stitch over it.
