A washing machine belongs to every household today. The price ranges are far apart for these practical and hygienic devices. Was a washing machine a high investment 20 years ago, the prices for new devices in normal sizes start at under 200 €. Upwards, there are still hardly any limits. On average you have to expect about 500-800 euros for a washing machine, depending on performance and manufacturer.

Why washing machines are so heavy

Washing machines have become much cheaper. One thing has remained the same: your heavy weight. The design-related need for balance weights makes this inevitable. The wet laundry in the drum generates high torque. This results in the spin of the laundry to the fact that the whole machine starts to vibrate strongly. Without the high counterweights, the machine would start beating unchecked. The counterweights are on high-quality machines made of cast steel, in cheaper equipment made of concrete. This is irrelevant for the wash quality. However, the heavy weight of the washing machine makes a bad purchase especially painful.

site

If it is determined only in the apartment that the washing machine does not fit in the intended location, it is particularly annoying. The heavy equipment must be re-packed, returned to the store and replaced with another equally heavy device. However, this mistake in the choice of a washing machine is easy to avoid: The manufacturers stick to standard dimensions, so they can offer equipment suitable for any installation situation.

Site of the washing machine

Unlike most other electrical appliances, the location of a washing machine is not arbitrary. These machines need three things:

  • A power connection
  • A water inlet
  • A water drain

Any site where only one of these three necessary components is missing is unsuitable for installing a washing machine. Although you can expand through inlet and outlet hoses the area for the possible sites of a washing machine. But the longer the hoses become, the higher the risk of leakage. If then the floor is not sufficiently resistant to moisture, can quickly cause great damage. Especially comfortable are the separate laundry rooms. Here you will find all the necessary connections, enough space and a robust and inexpensive lining of the room.

If the household does not have a laundry room, the bathroom is ideal for installing a washing machine. The tiled floor and the proximity to the fittings make the operation of the washing machine particularly well suited. The kitchen is only a third choice as a site for a washing machine. Although there are current, inflow and outflow of water there. Nevertheless, the proximity of laundry to stove and hob is not ideal for laundry.

Measure space

A standard commercial washing machine for setting up has the following basic dimensions:

  • 60 cm wide
  • 60 cm depth
  • 85 cm height

If no installation solution is planned in a kitchen unit, this basic dimension should be accepted before the purchase. Larger washing machines are found only in industrial applications, such as laundromats.

With a footprint of 60 x 60 cm you are looking for a suitable place in a bathroom. With clever planning, the usefulness of the floor space can now be maximized: If a tumble dryer is to be purchased in addition to the washing machine, the stacking solution is ideal not only in confined spaces. In addition to the enormous space savings is a washing module, consisting of washing machine below and dryer on top, particularly comfortable. The intermediate boards available for this purpose are also available with an extendible tray. On this drawer can then be easily turned off the laundry basket for loading and unloading of the dryer. But there must be enough air to the top. Overall, the double module therefore needs a height of almost 200cm. In bathrooms, piping or sloping roofs can be a hindrance here. Therefore, planning well, saves a lot of trouble afterwards.

Standard sizes in the overview

Manufacturers have agreed on a range of standard sizes for white goods. In this way, they can meet kitchen manufacturers by installing dishwashers, stoves, dryers, microwaves and even washing machines. Nevertheless, there is an interesting variety of different sizes and models, with which you can find the right washing machine for every application. The washing machines are differentiated in:

  • Mini washing machines
  • toploader
  • Front loaders

Here we show you the usual dimensions from very small to normal size:

Mini washing machines

Mini-washing machines are from the idea especially for mobile use, such as camping holidays intended. They have a significantly reduced capacity and functionality compared to a normal washing machine. However, you can clean your laundry with these simple appliances. There is nothing to be said against starting a mini-washing machine in a single household.

Mini washing machines still have the widest variety of shapes. The machines, which cost between 50 and 200 euros, can today achieve considerable benefits. Washing 2-9 kilograms of laundry works amazingly well even in these very small machines. The dimensions vary, however, very strong. This is clear from this type selection:

  • oneConcept MNW2-SG002: 37 cm width x 36 cm x depth 66 cm height
  • oneConcept MNW2-DB003: 57cm width x35cm depth x 58cm height
  • TecTake mini-washing machine: 65 cm wide x 40 cm deep x 75 cm high
  • Syntrox Germany A 9 Kg washing machine: 48 cm wide x 48 cm deep 83 cm high

With the very small washing machines, big reductions in efficiency have to be made. Sometimes they only have a capacity of 2-3 kilograms, which should not be enough for a single household in the long run.

toploader

Top loaders are washing machines that are loaded and unloaded by an upper lid. This construction was formerly common. It combines many advantages:

  • The washing machine can not leak due to the design
  • The laundry drum is mounted on both sides and therefore very quiet
  • The washing machine can be built very narrow

Although a tube can burst with a top loader. However, they are designed so that the drum runs in a tub, which is only open to the top. This makes them a bit safer than the standard front loader with its characteristic porthole door.

The top loaders are largely displaced by the front loaders. However, they are particularly popular with single households, as they are in a particularly compact size. However, top loaders are basically not built-under. Also, a dryer can not be put on it. Top loaders are therefore basically stand-alone machines. The standard dimensions for Toplader are:

  • 40 - 45 cm wide
  • 88 - 90 cm height
  • 60 cm depth

Front loaders

The front loaders make up the largest group of washing machines with 90%. Their front loading door makes them very comfortable to operate. However, this design greatly limits their size by design.

The door of a front loader washing machine protrudes exactly in the center of the washing drum. To ensure that the laundry can be sufficiently loaded and unloaded, the door must be large enough. But the drum behind the door must be able to pick up the laundry safely. The bigger the door, the bigger the drum gets. That is why the front-loading washing machines are very limited in their width. They can not be built arbitrarily narrow because they can not be loaded otherwise.

The standard sizes for front loaders are:

  • Standard stand-alone devices, not built-in: 60 cm wide x 60 cm deep x 85 cm high
  • Standard built-in appliances: 60 cm wide x 60 cm deep x 82 cm high
  • Low standard standard for stand-alone appliances: 60 cm wide x 33 or 40 cm deep x 85 cm high
  • Low standard size of built-in appliances: 60 cm wide x 40 cm deep x 82 cm high

A "shallow unit" can be useful in installation situations in which a pipe runs along a wall or the body of the kitchen is designed only very narrow.

There are also some special sizes:

The white goods budget maker "Candy" offers very compact front loader machines measuring 51cm wide x 44cm deep and 70cm high .

The manufacturer Bauknecht has some particularly high-quality machines with the dimensions 69 cm wide x 80 cm deep x 96 cm high in the program. For such a large machine, however, a laundry room should be ready.

The largest consumer washing machine is currently offered by the manufacturer HAIER. It consists of a ready-made combination of washing machine and dryer. Both units are integrated in a single housing on top of each other: The machine is 6 0 cm wide and 60 cm deep, but 128 cm high and enormous 116 kg heavy. It is certainly very comfortable once it has been set up. However, moving with such a tower is a challenge. The connection systems of washing machine and stacked dryer available today make such a bulky machine actually not necessary.
