Hardly anyone wants to spend their precious free time washing dishes. In the meantime, a dishwasher belongs in almost every household. The connection of the dishwasher you can do it yourself, you do not have to bring a technician into the house. We will show you how to safely connect a dishwasher in seven simple steps.

Even in the smallest kitchen is now space for a dishwasher. However, the manufacturers have taken the ever smaller homes and single households into account and designed both very narrow appliances measuring only 45 centimeters wide and even smaller dishwashers that find their place on the worktop. These dishwashers are hardly larger than a microwave and ideal for a single household. However, they are usually more expensive to maintain than the normal size dishwasher, considering the amount of washed dishes. One thing is common to all devices, they need both a power outlet and a water inlet and outlet.

You need this:

  • Wasserpumpenzange
  • spirit level
  • wire brush
  • screwdriver
  • bucket
  • wipe
  • rubber gloves
  • Cuttermesser
  • Hemp / teflon tape
  • Siphon with second drain
  • Aqua stop
  • Water hose with aquastop
Pipe wrench and spanner

Planning and buying

Already before buying the dishwasher, you should clarify whether all necessary connections are in the right place. To connect a dishwasher, a water inlet and a waste water connection are required. Also a power connection should be located near the machine. With these important elements in place, it's easy to connect a dishwasher in just seven steps. If one of these connections is still missing in your kitchen, you need the help of a specialist.

Tip: If the selected dishwasher does not yet have an Aquastop, you can get a corresponding Aquastop for your water supply in the hardware store.

This additional safety valve is simply screwed to the water connection. If there is no room under your sink to install the Aquastop, then you can just as well attach a new hose to the dishwasher, which has an aquastop function. These tubes cost from about 20 euros at a length of 1.5 meters. They are available in every hardware store or on the internet. A good aquastop valve costs between 20 and 40 euros. This is also to be had everywhere in the trade. These products are standardized and should suit any dishwasher.

Check necessary connections

Set up dishwasher

You may need to remove some shipping locks before you can set up the unit. Of course, the place of installation should be even and stable. Remember, with a full load of crockery and rinse water, the dishwasher likes to weigh around 100 Kg. If there is an additional worktop above the dishwasher, check that the unit fits even below the spirit level later.

Tip: You will find the operating instructions for the appliance in the packaging of the dishwasher. Before you connect the device, you should study it well. There is also noted, where might still transport safety devices stuck. You will also find information there on whether the hose is equipped with an Aquastop or if you need to retrofit it yourself.

Make fresh water connection

First, turn off either the main water tap or the angle valve under the sink. Open the faucet a little to let the remaining water run out and to check that the water is completely turned off. You only need the angle valve for cold water when connecting the machine. On some machines it is possible to connect a hot water connection directly to the dishwasher. But the success of the promised energy savings from the warm water is rather controversial. It is usually recommended to use the cold water connection. Please read the operating instructions of the new device.

Unscrew angle valve before connecting

Put a bucket under the corner valve, because it will certainly leak some residual water. If there is only one inlet for the faucet at your angle valve, you must install a double valve. The simplest version is a double branch, which can be screwed on the old angle valve, because then you do not need to turn off the entire water supply. Otherwise, a new double angle valve is screwed on. To do this, remove the old angle valve and clean the thread slightly with a wire brush. Thread the double valve with a little hemp or Teflon tape and screw it very tightly onto the pipe.

Tip: If you want to solve a very old angle valve, this can be associated with a lot of effort. Be careful not to damage the wire behind it.

If you have too little leverage with your water pump pliers, you can extend these with two pieces of iron or copper pipe. Simply put the piece of pipe over the two ends of the water pump pliers, you already have much more power.

Now all you have to do is connect the dishwasher's water supply hose to the new or existing valve. You should work carefully with the water pump pliers. Most of the screw connections on these devices today are made of plastic. If necessary, wrap an old cloth around the jaws of the pliers so as not to damage the small wings on the hose connection.

Connect sewage hose

If you have a new sink, there will usually be an extra plug on the siphon for a dishwasher. Then only the closure is removed and connected to the drain hose of the rinse. Usually this is supplied with a matching clamp, which you just have to put on and tighten.

Dismantle siphon - do not forget gloves and buckets

However, if the siphon does not have an additional plug that can be easily removed with a craft knife, then you need to get a new modern siphon in the hardware store. The costs are very manageable with about 10 euros . Before you dismantle the old siphon, put the bucket down again and put a wipe next to it. This is unfortunately a very unpleasant work, because the residual water in the odor trap unpleasant stinks.

Tip: Put on rubber gloves to keep the siphon residue from getting on your hands.

First loosen any existing clamps and screw caps on the old siphon. Then take it off. Try dropping the siphon directly into the bucket. The old siphon can be disposed of with household waste. The new models are usually equipped with flexible connections and thus fit any structural condition. First insert the wall connection and then connect the siphon to the sink.

Before you connect the dishwasher, you should run the tap a little to see if the new siphon is tight in the two previous connections. Once the new siphon has passed the test, you can connect the waste water hose of the dishwasher as described above.

power connection

To connect the dishwasher to the power supply, you only need to plug it into the socket. In modern kitchens planning has usually taken into account an extra outlet, which is located behind the later dishwasher. Never use an extension cord or even worse a multiple extension. In case of fire, your insurance would not pay you, as this is considered grossly negligent.

Tip: If you have to fetch an electrician anyway to set a socket for the dishwasher, then have this socket extra in the fuse box with its own machine to connect. You should also secure the washer and dryer individually in the fuse box in the same way.

Check fuses

test run

First, do not put any dishes in the dishwasher and do a test run first. Of course, you should turn on the water at the double angle valve. If the main water supply has been switched off, it must now be opened again. Let the air through the work in the pipe system escape via the tap. First of all, open the tap very lightly. If it stops bubbling and splashing, you can close the tap again.

Wipe all connections well with a dry cloth before testing. This will help you to see better during the test run whether moisture is still escaping somewhere. If this is the case, you will need to tighten the connections a second time.

Dry everything well - check for leaks

Older kitchen sinks often have a stopcock next to the tap, where the water supply to the dishwasher can be interrupted. If there is an extra angle valve for a dishwasher connection, a tap can also be present. If this is the case, it makes sense in the future to keep the stopcock on the tap always turned on. Of course, only if the new dishwasher has an aquastop. If your new machine does not draw water during the test run, this can be due to a stopcock that was previously overlooked.

Align

If the test run was successful, you can move the device to its final place. Check with the spirit level very carefully, if the machine is absolutely correct. Most machines are equipped with a wrench that allows the height of the feet of the machine to be adjusted. If such a wrench is not available, simply use your own water pump pliers. If the machine goes awry, the water can not drain properly and you'll always have dirty smelly puddles on one side of the machine floor. This will prevent the machine from working properly and your dishes will not be clean.
