Dishwasher does not heat up: what to do if the water does not get warm?

  • Determine heating power
  • Causes of low heat output
    • Heating rod calcified
    • Wrong inlet quantity
    • Wrong water pressure
  • Causes of missing heat output

The dishwasher is an indispensable kitchen appliance that relies on hot water to run the dishwashing programs. It may happen that due to a technical defect or problems with the water supply, the dishwasher can not heat the water sufficiently. Depending on the cause, a large number of components must be checked here before the dishes are cleaned.

The dishwasher is like the washing machine and the dryer is a heavily used device that rinses daily. For this reason, individual components can break every now and then or do not work properly. This is especially annoying if the dishwasher does not heat properly and thus the program is running normally, but the cleaning performance is inferior. Especially with greasy cargoes, hot water is of the utmost importance, as this is the only way to dissolve the fat. This makes the heating effect essential for the daily rinse. However, this problem is not always a purely technical defect.

Determine heating power

Before you can investigate the individual causes and take appropriate countermeasures, you must first determine how strong the heating power of the machine is. This is important, because only then can be excluded in advance some sources of error, which reduces the time and potential cost of a lot. For this you should again run the washing machine, preferably with little or no dishes, and check how warm the water gets during the program. To do this you should simply press the pause button during the flushing process and open the machine. Two possibilities present themselves:

  • Dishwasher heats water, but not enough
  • Dishwasher does not heat at all, water stays cold

Depending on the heating capacity of your machine, other causes of the problem can be considered. Often in a total failure of the heating, the heating elements are responsible, which may be damaged, which speaks only a repair.

Causes of low heat output

When the heating power is low, there are above all problems in the area of the water inlet or the heating elements. These do not work properly and therefore have problems to heat the water properly. These little problems are quite easy to fix, even if a repair should be necessary. This includes:

  • calcified heating rod
  • wrong water pressure
  • wrong intake quantity
Heating element in the dishwasher

These problems can be easily solved except for the vacuum switch and the pressure box and help to be able to use the dishwasher again effectively. It is important that you perform these analyzes accurately, as this is the only way to handle the problem. The dishwasher must not be flushed with too little heat, as otherwise the cleaners will not work, the fat will not be dissolved and the service life of the machine will be reduced.

Heating rod calcified

If the heating element is calcified, this is due to too hard water and not enough dishwasher salt in the machine. The dishwasher always needs a certain amount of decalcifier, since above all the amount of the agent in multitabs is not sufficient to soften the water efficiently. Each machine has a salt indicator, either two intertwined arrows in the shape of an S or a cup with S on them, indicating when the salt needs refilling. If this is missed, one of the most common problems is that the heater is calcified and for this reason can no longer function effectively.

Here you must descale the heating element:

  • remove all dishes from the dishwasher
  • clean them briefly, if necessary
  • either add a decalcifier or appropriate home remedy to the machine (for example, citric acid and soda)
  • select a program with at least 60 ° C
  • do not select a pre-rinse program
  • Start the machine

By this measure, the dishwasher is once completely flushed through and the funds can act. Since the heating element is not exposed in modern machines and can only be achieved with the necessary technical knowledge, direct treatment of the heating element is not really an option. Mostly the machine should work again after descaling. If not, it could be at the water inlet.

Wrong inlet quantity

For the dishwasher, it is particularly important that the water intake is correct. This can be influenced by a variety of causes, including:

  • Faucet not completely turned on
  • calcified faucet
  • Hoses kinked
  • Hoses clogged

If the faucet is the problem, you will recognize this after disassembling the hose and checking the faucet. As a precaution, place a bucket underneath and try to turn the tap on completely. If this is already open and enough water comes out, the machine is to blame. If there is only a small amount of tap water, it will either calcify or there will be a problem with the general water supply in the house. For a calcified faucet nozzle, proceed as follows:

  • unscrew the nozzle
  • clean the nozzle with water
  • Place this in a solution of one part water and one part acetic acid
  • Let it work for several hours, preferably overnight
  • clean the nozzle again
  • screw the nozzle back on

If the nozzle was the person in charge, the water is now properly returned to the dishwasher and the device can do the job. If not, you must contact the property manager to find out if there is a problem with the lines. Otherwise you should test the hoses for blockages. Completely remove them and allow water to flow through. If this can not be done, you must remove the blockage, preferably with a brush or a lot of water pressure. How to solve possible kinks in hoses, without having to dismantle them:

  • pull out the dishwasher
  • locate the tube and pull it slightly until the kink is released
  • put it a little higher, so it does not buckle again

Once the inlet volume is back to normal, the dishwasher can properly perform the wash program and develop the necessary heat for clean dishes.

Tip: Of course, you can simply buy a new nozzle and replace it with the calcified one. This also applies to hoses that are worn out and therefore can no longer supply enough water to the machine.

Wrong water pressure

If the water pressure is not correct, that is a complicated matter. If the above points do not work, you are having problems with the pressure cell that needs to be cleaned, readjusted or repaired. You should have this task performed by a specialist, as you can do a great deal wrong here without the necessary knowledge. The can is located in the door and to get to this, the inner plate of the door must be unscrewed. There is then the valve, which can now be checked and reset.

Causes of missing heat output

If no heating power is noticed and the water remains cold, completely different problems exist which are purely related to the technology of the machine. The dishwasher has a variety of components that can only be replaced, repaired or recalibrated with the necessary expertise. These components are not sensitive or easily broken, but the dishwasher is actually used on a daily basis and it is for this reason that these components may be damaged due to wear and tear. It is important that you do not try to replace them yourself, otherwise further complications may occur. Possible damaged components:

  • heating elements
  • Power supply lines inside the machine for the heating element
  • Motor of the circulation pump
  • circulating pump
  • Aqua stop
  • electronic control
  • relay control
  • sensors
  • thermostat

It can often happen that no component is actually damaged but incorrectly calibrated. The sensors and the thermostat inside the dishwasher ensure the correct dosage of detergent, water and heat. Once these, for some reason, no longer calculate the appropriate performance, washing the dishes remains cold and dirty. If you have tried the above points and the dishwasher is still cold, you should claim your warranty or contact a technician who will look at your device.
