If you want to knit stockings with sock yarn, you can make use of a sock chart. For the respective wool thicknesses general values are defined here, which are generally valid for sock wool. For each foot size, the number of stitches and rows to knit can be easily read from a spreadsheet. First of all you need a stitch sample or the run length of the wool and the information, if the wool was spun four, six or eight threads.

important terms

The following are the most important terms with a short explanation

Stop mesh:

The sock is started on the shaft. So on the part of the stocking that encloses the calf. For a corresponding number of stitches is posted, from which then the first knitted series can arise. The stitches are struck on two needles (five needles) and then distributed evenly over four needles. In this way, a circle can be knit, which then forms the seamless shaft. The sock chart shows the number of stitches in each shoe size.

Shaft length:

Shaft length refers to the area between the damaged stitches (upper edge) and the heel part of the foot. The most common pattern for this part of the stocking is the ribbed pattern, which is made up of alternating left and right stitches, creating a very stretchy knit. Optical variations can be achieved by wide or thin ribs. Narrow dome rows are also used for the shaft area to provide more stability through this pattern. Summer socks, knit from cotton-rich sock yarn, often feature lace patterns that also stretch across the shaft area. Here, the elasticity of the stocking is achieved by a very narrow cuff, which can be knitted in addition to the sock yarn with an elastic Garnish thread. The sock chart shows the length of the knit to be knitted in the form of centimeters.

Heel height:

The heel height refers to the space between the sole and the ankle of the foot. Half of the stitches are taken out of service, with the stitches of needle 1 and 4 being worked on. In the sock table you can read off the required number of rows for heel height for each wool size. In contrast to the shaft, this area is usually knit smooth right. In order to ensure the durability of this physically stressed site, the wool in the heel area is often taken twice.

Pick-up stitches:

For the heel cap the stitches of the needle 1 and 4 are divided according to the specifications in the sock chart. This information serves the width of heel wall and heel cup. In order to be able to form the horizontal angle at the heel, two stitches are knitted together at the end of the row until the desired heel width is reached. These shortened rows create the special shape of the heel. Afterwards, the removed stitches must be taken back into the knitting row by knitting them out of the edge stitches and thus restoring the original number of stitches.

Foot length to tip:

After the heel the part of the sock is knitted, which encloses the sole and the instep of the foot up to the beginning of the toes. This area is referred to as the "foot length to the top" that ends where the sock is chamfered at the sides by loops for the toe party. In the foot length usually half of the stitches that make up the upper instep are knitted in a pattern, while the half that make up the sole is worked smoothly to the right. In the sock table there are numbers that describe the foot length with the required centimeters.

Remaining stitches at the top:

The number of remaining stitches at the top describes how many stitches to tie off at the top of the sock should be left after stitches for the slant have been taken off to the right and left of the sock top. The remaining middle stitches are either bound off and sewn together or tied together in the mattress stitch so that no seam is visible.
