Material and preparation

The following instructions explain knitting socks with an embroidered owl motif for size 34 . In the table you will find all the important information and dimensions you need for this sock size.

You need:

  • a needle size 3 game
  • possibly a circular needle
  • darning needle
  • pins
  • Tape measure and scissors
  • Stocking yarn (4-ply, wool roedel, superwash)

The amount of wool used naturally depends on the size you want to knit. Socks of size 23 knit with about 50 g of wool. The size 33, however, already requires about 80 g of wool. So plan for these socks a consumption of 100 g of stocking wool.

Size Chart

If you would like to adjust the sock size at will, we recommend our size chart for knitting socks with 4-thread yarn.

Plan owl motive

This children's socks has an embroidered owl motif. We want to show that you do not necessarily have to knit a motive, it also works differently. We have recorded an owl's face and transferred this with a stitch on the children's socks.

You can do this yourself any motif that the child would like best, embroider. Draw the motif in a simple way on a checkered paper. Then fill in the boxes with large X letters and you will have your own embroidery template for the children's stockings. This could be, for example, the name of the child, or just his initials, or the sun, or a kitten, maybe even a snowman for the Christmas socks. Everything can be embroidered with a few stitches.

We show you this method because it is not so easy knitting motifs in rounds. Only very experienced knitters who master the Norwegian pattern can also knit such multi-colored patterns in rounds.

But not every knitter masters this knitting technique. Try it according to our instructions, your children's socks will inspire.

Knitting instructions for socks

cuffs

For the cuff, hit 56 stitches.

Split the stitches so that each needle has 14 stitches. Work the cuff as follows:

1 stitch on the right - 1 stitch on the left - we recommend to knit the right stitched knit. This means you stab the right stitch from the back. In this way the cuff becomes more elastic and the socks more comfortable.

The cuff height is here 3.5 centimeters.

shaft

The shaft is knitted only with right stitches and there are no increases or decreases in knitting. We have incorporated blue stripes. You can decide that at will.

Embroider owl

After knitting the shaft, we started embroidery work. Put all the stitches on a circular needle, so that you can easily get into the stocking with one hand.

First use 2 pins or 2 safety pins to fix the entire width of the motif. You will now embroider in this area.

Each stitch has the image of a "V". You embroider the V so that you cut out at the V-tip bottom, put the next stitch over it as a whole on the needle and pull the thread through. Then you stab again in the lower part of the "V".

If you work as you see in the pictures, then you can re-embroider every motif as well.

After you have embroidered the design, put the stitches back on the needle play and knit the shaft as usual until the desired length is reached.

heel

Knitting the heel in size according to the size chart. This heel is the cap's heel. Detailed instructions can be found here: Käppchenferse

Note: At the heel the stitches of needle 1 and 4 are folded together. Needles 2 and 3 are not needed at the beginning. When knitting, be sure to follow the instructions in the table. At size 34, the loops for the coping are then divided as follows: 9 - 10 - 9. On one needle are 9, on the next 10 and on the last stitch again 9 stitches.

The heel height is here 5 centimeters.

Foot and the top

The foot is knitted smooth right. Here, the foot length is to be planned with 18 centimeters. The total foot length with tip is 22 centimeters.

For the toe, divide the needles into 2 groups:

  • 1st group = needle 1 and 2
  • 2nd group = needle 3 and 4

Now decreases take place:

1st needle:

  • Work up to the last three stitches. Knit right.
  • The second and third last stitch are knitted together on the right.
  • Knitt the last stitch on the right.

2nd needle:

  • Knit stitch 1 on the right.
  • Lift off the 2nd stitch on the right.
  • Knit the 3rd stitch on the right.
  • Pull the lifted stitch over the knitted stitch.
  • Knit remaining stitches as normal.

3rd needle:

  • is knitted like needle 1

4th needle:

  • is knitted like needle 2

In every second round, the decrease takes place up to half of all stitches on the needle. This means you take one round and knit a round normally. If only half of all the stitches are on a needle, remove the stitches in each round for the top. The last two stitches on each needle are all removed in one turn. Cut the thread off for a sufficient length of time. Knitt the first stitch and pull the thread back through the stitch. So you keep working until the thread has been pulled through the last stitch. Then tighten it and sew it inside the sock.

Done is the Kindersocke with owl face. Work the second sock in the same way.
