Knitting socks is for beginners usually the first project with a double needle play. It is actually easier than knitting in rows, except for closing the round at the beginning. Only with right stitches is the first sock quickly finished. If you want more variety, you can try knitting socks with patterns.

In this beginner's guide you will learn a pattern that will give your socks a very special look. In our pictures, the pattern looks much more complex than it really is! We will explain slowly and step by step how to knit the socks with pattern . Another special feature of this guide for beginners is that the socks are knitted from the top.

This has the advantage that you can always try them on while knitting. At the heel, we opted for the simple boomerang heel. See for yourself how easy it can be to knit socks with patterns.

Material and preparation

What you need for material:

  • 6-thread sock yarn, approx. 100 - 150 g (150 g | 375 m)
  • Pin game size 4
  • another knitting needle / pigtail needle
  • tape measure
  • wool needle

For beginners, we refer to the slightly thicker, 6-ply sock yarn and a shoe size of 39. If you would like to knit the same socks with pattern for a different size, this is quite possible. Before doing so, find out from the relevant size charts the corresponding information for stitching, foot length and stitch distribution at the heel.

Prior knowledge:

  • right stitches
  • left stitches
  • Circular knitting with double-needle play
  • Increase mesh
  • envelope

The basic instructions for knitting, for knitting beginners, can also be found on Talu.de.

If you are new to stitching stitches from the intermediate thread or the envelope, find a guide for beginners explaining the procedure. It really is not difficult. If you have practiced it four to five times on a specimen, you can start knitting the socks with pattern.

The summit

Cast four stitches on each of two needles . Close the stitches in a round and knit a round on all eight right stitches.

Spread the stitches over three needles (3-3-2). In the next round, take a stitch from the intermediate thread after each stitch.

Then knit a round over all 16 stitches . Now take a stitch after every second stitch.

Tip: Use a stitch marker for the beginning of the round.

This is followed by a round of right stitches over the now 24 stitches . Then take a stitch after every third stitch and then knit one round over all 32 stitches .

If you have gained one stitch from the cross thread after every fourth stitch in the following round, knit two more rounds over all 40 stitches . Divide the stitches on four needles so that there are ten stitches on each needle. This is followed by a penultimate round of increase, in which you pick up a stitch from the intermediate thread after every fifth stitch.

Now you have 48 stitches in the round. This number is actually sufficient for a shoe size 39. But since we knit a cable pattern that pulls the socks together slightly, we need 52 stitches . So work two rounds with 48 stitches. Then take a stitch at the sixth stitch of each needle. Now there are 13 stitches on each of the four needles.

If you want to knit larger socks with patterns, take eight stitches as usual and four more stitches three laps later if necessary. For smaller socks you stop earlier with the increases. In any case, knit three more rounds to the right after the last increase round.

The foot

Now divide the needles into different parts of the pattern. On the first and fourth needle, knit the sole flat right. On the second and third needle, work the pattern.

So knit the first needle of the round with right stitches. On the second needle, knit four stitches on the right, three stitches on the left, and another six stitches on the right. On the third needle, work the first six stitches on the right, then three stitches on the left and the remaining four stitches on the right. On the fourth needle knit again only right stitches.

If you have not 52 but 56 or 60 stitches in a turn, increase the number of left stitches by one or two. If you knit with 48 stitches, you can omit one of the three left stitches. With even fewer stitches, the braid we are about to explain to you must be worked with eight instead of twelve stitches.

In the second pattern round, knit only the first stitch of the second needle on the right.

It follows an envelope. The following three right stitches will take you to a stitch on the left side. After another turn, knit the following three stitches on the left and the remaining six stitches on the right. On the third needle you knit as in the preliminary round first the six right and then the three left stitches.

It follows an envelope. Then knit the three stitches on the left side together. After another turn, knit the last stitch on the needle to the right.

Repeat this pattern on the outer four stitches of Needle Two and Three every four turns. This means that you knit the appropriate stitches to the right over three rounds, and then turn the combination of an envelope - three stitches to the left - in the fourth round.

The third pattern round looks exactly like the first one. In the fourth pattern round you knit the braid. For this you knit on the second needle first the right and left stitches. From the last six stitches, take the first three on an extra needle or a pigtail needle .

Lay the needle behind the knitting work. Now knit the last three stitches on the right first.

Then retrieve the extra needle and knit these three stitches to the right. At the beginning of the third needle, proceed in a similar way: Take the first three stitches on the extra needle. This time, however, put her to work.

Knitt the other three stitches on the right and then on the extra needle or pigtail needle. Then it continues as usual with the three left and four right stitches.

The crossover is repeated every five rounds. Knitting the middle twelve stitches on the back of your foot so over four turns smooth right.

In the fifth round you cross six stitches as described above.

Tip: Make a tally as you knit these socks!

To avoid chaos in the coordination of hole patterns at the edge and cable pattern in the middle, it is best to keep a tally on the knitted rounds.

So you can quickly see in which round the envelopes are and when the crossovers have to be made for the braid.

The foot of the sock becomes about 25 cm long at size 39. The boomerang heel itself needs about 4 cm. Therefore, knit the foot with pattern about 21 inches long.

The boomerang heel

The boomerang heel is only worked on the first and the fourth needle. The pattern on the other two needles "rests" at this time. Only in the middle part you have to be careful to continue the pattern properly. A detailed instruction for beginners to knit a boomerang heel can be found here: Knit boomerang heel.

The shaft

Following the heel, knit the now familiar pattern over the first and the fourth needle. On the second and third needle continue the pattern as usual. After the heel, first determine the division into left and right stitches on the first and fourth needle. On the fourth needle knit four stitches on the right, then three stitches on the left and then six stitches on the right. On the first needle, the scheme is mirrored: six right, three left, four right.

Now knit the side hole pattern exactly offset to the hole pattern on the second and third needle. That is, if you have knit the second row after the envelopes on the third needle, knit the envelopes on the first and fourth needle immediately afterwards.

The crossovers for the cable pattern always knit in front and back in the same lap. You can knit the stock as high as you like. Pull the socks over to the sample once in a while. When you are satisfied with the height, knit the cuff last. To do that, switch from our pattern to the simple cuff scheme "2 right, 2 left". Work the cuff at least 4 cm high.

Now all you have to do is tie off the stitches and sew the hole at the top with the starting thread . Then your first sock is done with pattern!
