The cistern is probably one of the most important components of the toilet, this is the water for the rinse. Over the years, it can happen that the float in the box no longer works properly, which inevitably leads to a high water bill, since the flushing is no longer optimally regulated. If this is the case, be sure to repair the valve.
If you have a cistern and have looked into it once, you will see that it has a variety of wires and parts. One of these is the float, which regulates the amount of water that the box releases for flushing. If this component is no longer operational, it can lead to increased leakage of the cistern, which presents itself in high amounts of water within the toilet. It is also possible that you notice a constant flow of water that is unusual and should be corrected. A big advantage of repairing the float is the level of difficulty. Even inexperienced craftsmen can handle it.
If your toilet has a constant flow of water as explained in the introduction, it is often the swimmer's fault. As soon as the flush does not catch and only more water than usual comes out of the box, then the component must be changed, cleaned or disconnected. But to do this you need the right tools to make this project easier:
- Limescale cleaner or appropriate home remedies
- replacement float
- wire brush
- pipe wrench
Depending on the model of the cistern, you may need another screwdriver to open it. You may also be lucky and do not need it if the lid of the box is easy to lift off. You should check this beforehand.
Tip: the harder the water in your region, the more effective the lime cleaner must be. You can either choose a suitable lime cleaner that is strong enough or one of the many home remedies that are often more effective at reducing limescale.
Before you can replace or clean the filling valve, a synonym for the float valve, you must first make some preparations. After you have the utensils handy, follow these steps to get to the individual components that make up the cistern:
- open the cistern
- the lid of the cistern requires either some force or the release of one or more screws
- After the plastic lid has been lifted, you can see the interior of the cistern
- localize the water inlet and turn off the water
- if this is too difficult by hand, just use a pipe wrench
- locate the Heberglocke
- the bell is connected to the flushing lever and can be easily lifted by hand
- Hang the operating arm so that it does not return to its original starting position
- that would let new water flow in
- raise the bell and let drain all the water
- Now locate the float
- this consists either of sponge, styrofoam or plastic
- he floats on the water surface to measure the water level
- unscrew this hose leading from the water and then lift out the entire flushing unit
After you have lifted the components that are connected to the float in the cistern, you can start with the general repair or cleaning. Make sure to close the water connection sufficiently, so that no further water flows into the box. This would only complicate the work.

Now that you have removed the float valve and all the other parts from the cistern, the most important part is the repair. For this you proceed as follows:
Step 1: Look at the component and locate the float. This is located directly on the water supply and varies depending on the manufacturer in the form. The component is located on the water supply and is also connected to another component that allows the level to be measured and the command to be executed.

It is then rinsed off and can be returned to the cistern.
Step 5: Alternatively, a broken seal on the float may be responsible for the watercourse. To do this, disassemble the valve and look at each gasket to make sure it is this problem. The individual seals can be purchased either in the hardware store or specialist shops, but often it is worth replacing the entire valve much more.
Step 6: If you have checked all the gaskets and parts of the valve and the float is still not working properly after decalcifying, you should replace it completely. Due to its material properties, the float is characterized more quickly by wear than other parts in the cistern and therefore has to be replaced frequently. Styrofoam floats in particular belong to this category, because they absorb moisture faster than others due to the structure of the material and soak up with time. This is also the case with floats designed on the basis of a sponge.
Step 7: After disposing of the old valve and having the new one on hand, you can put it in exactly the same place. Reconnect the hose of the water supply with the valve and position it so that it fits well and is not unstable in the cistern. Once the hose has been mounted, you can simply lift the bell jar to bring it back into the correct starting position.
Step 8: Now all you have to do is turn on the tap again and rinse once. So you can see if water continues to run randomly into the toilet or not. If this is not the case, you can place the lid and look forward to a successful exchange.
It does not happen that often that the filling valve breaks down. For example, if the plastic breaks or sticks, it should be replaced as soon as possible so you can continue to use the bathroom.
Tip: The more you decalcify the cistern, the longer the life of the valve, and less frequent replacement. This is especially suitable for people who want to do their projects quickly and effectively.
