Material and preparation

For the butterfly pattern as well as for the big butterfly you need nothing more than a yarn and a pair of knitting needles. For the beginning, use smooth wool in thickness four or five. Knitting butterfly pattern

The stylized butterflies are created by skipped stitches. The foundation is smooth right. You do not need more foreknowledge, because in the following we explain how to knit the butterflies. The pattern requires a mesh number divisible by ten. In addition, make at least two more stitches so that the rows do not start or end with the stitches off. Work these additional stitches in odd rows on the right and in the straight left. Before you start the pattern, knit a preparation row completely on the left.

Guide - butterfly mesh

Step 1: Slide five stitches over the right needle without pulling it off. Lay the thread at work. This process is called "lifting stitches left". It is important that you do not overtighten the thread that skips the stitches. Therefore, stretch the fabric at the lifted stitches while knitting the following stitch. In the next odd row, repeat this step so that two non-knitted pieces of thread (tensioning threads) are superimposed.

Step 2: The following operation is called "butterfly mesh" in this manual. Using the right knitting needle, pick up the two loose threads coming from below. Now take the next stitch and knit it to the right. Then pull the needle back down out of the tensioning threads. The straight knit stitch now holds the pieces of thread firmly, creating the butterfly.

Tip: After the butterfly stitch, check that none of the tension threads remain on the needle and form a superfluous mesh.

To knit the butterfly pattern:

1st row: Take off 5 stitches on the left, 5 stitches on the right
2nd row and all following straight rows: all stitches left
3rd row: like 1st row
5th row: 2 stitches on the right, 1 butterfly stitch, 7 stitches on the right
7th row: 5 stitches on the right, 5 stitches on the left

9th row: like 7th row
11th row: 7 stitches on the right, 1 butterfly stitch, 2 stitches on the right

Repeat the described twelve rows continuously.

Tip: Finish the work only on a sixth or twelfth row so that all butterflies are completely knitted and no loose tension threads remain.

The back of the pattern looks almost like knit on the right side. The butterflies only appear as small irregularities.

Knit butterfly

The cute butterfly is created by left stitches on the right ground. You do not need special techniques to work on the spring motif. The pattern extends over 22 stitches and 30 rows. On both sides, make additional stitches for the background and knit them smoothly to the right, that is, in odd-numbered rows on the right and in the left-right. On the back, the butterfly appears as pretty as the front. Only the structures of the meshes are reversed in motif and background. Decide for yourself which side you like better.

Each box represents a mesh. They follow the scheme from the bottom up. The rows with odd numbers read from right to left and the straight rows from left to right. In odd rows there is a dark box for a left stitch. A bright represents a right-hand stitch. In even-numbered rows, the assignment is reversed.

Possible variations

1. Knitted from cuddly mohair or angora wool, the butterfly pattern is great for winter wear. The butterflies are less clear in this case, but it still gives an attractive look, reminiscent of the scales of a pine cone.

2. Change the distance between the butterflies as desired or work them out irregularly. Note that each animal spans five stitches and six rows. In addition, at least one knitted stitch must be between the lifted stitches.

3. Knitting a variant with only one instead of two tension threads. Leave the third and fourth as well as the ninth and tenth row in the butterfly pattern.

4. If you have already learned how to knit two-tone with tensioning threads on the back, you can modify the big butterfly accordingly. Work smoothly to the right according to the scheme, with the dark boxes representing one color and the light ones for the other. Note that in this variant, the back is not usable, because there are the tensioning threads. If you want the bicolor butterfly to look good on both sides, you'll need to use the more elaborate double-face technique.

5. Design your own butterfly (or other design) by drawing it on the checkered paper as shown in this guide. Note that meshes are not square. You must therefore draw the motif higher than it should appear in the finished fabric. As a rule of thumb, for most yarns, two stitches and three rows will give you an approximate square.
