Sew loop snare - Instructions for a curtain with loops

I'm planning a new nursery for our oldest child. Now the fourth birthday is just around and the main furniture is available, but it should not look so bald, so I have decided to sew a loop scarf as a curtain for the new room. I have deliberately kept it simple, if you want to use this guide for a room with multiple windows. So you can do everything in one day and the room looks much more comfortable.

Today I'll show you how to sew a very simple loop curtain - the loop scarf. I explain everything step by step and in the end there are some info for fixings, if you need them. I've just sewn a curtain, of course you need a second one. It is so easy to sew that I would like to implement the second together with my child together.

Difficulty level 1/5
(this manual for sewing a loop scarf is also suitable for beginners)

Material costs 1-3 / 5
(depending on choice of fabric, width and length, the price for the loop scarf is variable)

Time expenditure 1/5
(depending on ability and material type with this manual about 45 minutes per curtain)

Material and preparation

The material selection

Curtains are ideally suited for lightweight, non-stretchy woven fabric. I use patchwork quality cotton weaves for my curtains, but you can also choose other fabrics. For transparent fabrics such as organza you should plan color-coordinated satin ribbon for the serging, so that everything looks neat. If you want to sew floor-length curtains or use heavier fabrics, you must reinforce the loops and about 10 cm at the top edge with non-woven fabric and / or seam tape, so that nothing hangs.

The pattern

To determine the right size for my curtain, I first measure my window. The height is 125 cm and the width is exactly 100 cm.

Since my curtain is indeed mounted above the window, I still add about 10 cm in length. I estimate an additional 10 cm for the hem additions and I add another 5 cm, because my curtain should reach just below the window sill. So I have a height of 140 cm.

The width must be at least the window width of 100 cm. But I want the fabric to fold. This is expected with a factor of at least 1.5 in width. This is easy to calculate because I need at least 1.5 m.

Tip: If your windows are wider than the fabric width, simply attach two curtain pieces per window that meet in the middle! Although this takes a bit longer in the processing, but nothing can flash through.

On each side you now have to calculate 3 cm seam allowance. My fabric has a width of about 160 cm, so I take it completely. So I'm with the 150 + 6 = 156 cm in any case right!

In addition, I need some fabric rights for the loops, where the scarf should then be hung. My loops should be 4 cm wide and 7 cm high. With the seam allowances I need rectangles with a height of 16 cm and a width of 10 cm. For the number of loops I have to calculate a bit:

The loops are 4 cm wide and should each be about 8 cm apart. This results in 12 cm per loop. My fabric is 160 cm wide, so I divide 160 cm by 12 cm. That's 13 and a few digits after the decimal point. So I take 13 as a loop number, which I will distribute evenly.

Tip: When cutting, make sure that your loops are upright in the motif, otherwise the pattern will be laterally across the curtain. Unfortunately I did not pay attention to it and the loops were upside down. I had to split everything again and sew again!

Sew loop scarf

Put the loop parts along the middle right to the right side (ie with the "nice" fabric side to each other) together and iron them well. Sew one foot wide (1 cm apart) straight along the long open edges. Sew start and finish well. Turn the loops and iron them flat.

Tip: I like to get over a page a bit, then you do not see it from the front.

In the next step I sew the two sides of the loop curtain. For this I mark myself a distance of 1.5 cm to the edge and hit him, iron and then hit again and iron again. Then I step down at about 1 - 1.25 cm.

Tip: When ironing over the finished seam again, the fabric lays here especially nice.

For the top, in which the loops are incorporated, I mark two lines at a distance of 1.5 and 8 cm. First, I fold the 1.5 cm inwards and iron them in, then the 8 cm to the outside and iron again. Finally, I fold the two edges as exactly as possible and iron again.

I mark with the center of the curtain and place needles from there at regular intervals, so I know later, where my loops are placed. From the side edge should be a few millimeters up to a maximum of 2.5 cm distance, so that the curtain falls beautifully.

The loops are now folded in the middle and (with the motif matching the curtain!) With the open edges down between them. I put my measuring stick on top, so that all loops are at the same height and stick them with needles. Alternatively, you can measure each loop individually, so that all are the same length.

Finally I step down once at each edge. At it is now feet wide. Next time I would quilt narrower with 0.5 to 0.7 cm.

For the lower hem I thread the loops on my curtain rod and hang it up. Then I mark down with a needle how long it should become final. I want him to reach over the window sill a bit.

At the back I now draw a line at 1.5 cm from the bottom edge and another at the height of my pin marking. I hit the 1.5 cm, iron and then at the second line and iron again. Then it is quilted feet wide.

Here are the pictures of the finished sewn curtain, before I sewed the loops right.

And we're done sewing with the loop scarf!

quick start Guide

Measure 1st window
2. Calculate size - width window width (smooth) or at least x 1.5 for folding
3. Cut curtain fabric and loops
4. Fold the loops longitudinally in the middle and iron
5. Quilting, turning, ironing long open edges
6. Cover pages (double punch at 1.5 cm)
7. Upper edge fold in at 1.5 cm to the inside, at 8 cm to the outside, edges on each other
8. Fold the loops in the middle, insert, adjust the lengths, topstitch and topstitch
9. Hang the curtain, mark the length.
10. Fold seam 1.5 cm, then fold again to mark, iron, topstitch.
