Cutting the cherry stalk - tips and hints

Columnal cherries have a long tradition. Most are referred to as vertical mustaches. They are exceptionally narrow and can reach heights of up to 4 meters. The trees are characterized by a very strong center drive and weak side shoots. Through breeding it is achieved that the trees develop fruitwood directly on the trunk. Unfortunately, unlike the column apples, there are varieties that manage without any incision. A cherry pillar must always be cut, the question is how much. There are both sweet and sour cherries, which are offered as a pillar form. Sweet cherries need more cutting measures. Good varieties grow by themselves with few branches to the column. Unfortunately, unsuitable varieties are offered as pillars. They then have to be cut very hard. Most recent varieties are usually narrower than older ones.

The pillar cherry, in contrast to the traditional column fruit tree, needs the "pillar apple" more care to stay in shape. The long and narrow shape of the tree, which is reminiscent of a pillar, must be intensively cared for and circumcised in the case of a cherry tree. Neglecting the regular cut, the column grows over time to a bush. Likewise, you should inform yourself before buying, whether it is the tree is a "real" pillar cherry. Only then bred specimens keep easily, but with proper care, their columnar shape.

Depending on the variety and branching of the tree, the cherry tree should be cut in the summer after harvest and at the beginning of the shoot in winter.

Columnal cherries are usually raised in one shot. The trimming is not complicated, but already has its peculiarities that you have to consider. So side branches on the central axis and rivals at the top have to be removed. It is ideal to pull out young, herbaceous side shoots already at the end of May. Alternatively, the tree can also be trained funnel-shaped. To do this, leave three to four branches and guide them upwards at a 45 ° angle. They are not shortened.
The middle axis should not be cut, otherwise the tree branches. All side shoots longer than 30 cm are taken back to 20 cm.

  1. Inherent educate, so only a central drive can stand
  2. Remove side branches at the center axis and competition drives the center
  3. Alternatively educate funnel-shaped, ie a central drive and three to four side branches
  4. Guide them upwards at a 45 ° angle
  5. Do not cut the central axis, the tree always forms a point, gets out of shape
