Today, we live in times when excellent products in consistent quality can be produced at low prices in large quantities. True, the good old craft still has its place. But it is increasingly needed, especially in construction, only for exclusive versions. The basic functions of a house can today be produced very well with standard parts. The prerequisite for this is that when erecting the bodyshell, the correct dimensions are always adhered to for all construction openings.

Everything according to standards The standard that regulates the construction opening dimensions for standard parts on construction sites is the DIN18101 . It prescribes what an opening between the rooms or to the outside should look like, so that a component manufactured according to standard fits into it. The selection of standard dimensions, also called nominal dimensions, is much larger for windows than for doors.

The basic measure for the construction openings is, as with all other dimensions belonging to the shell, the one-eighth meter. This is the transverse direction of the smallest stone gauge plus joint or 1 cm plaster layer. All dimensions are always a multiple of this basic size. This achieves the perfect combinability of all products belonging to the bodyshell.

Standard dimensions for doors

The DIN 18101 "Doors for Housing" defines the sizes of the door leaves, where the lock and hinges have to sit and the resulting shell opening dimensions. This can also be concluded on the size of the frames and frames back. Nevertheless, a little bit of computing work is necessary to get to the actual gauge. The following applies:

  • The opening width is calculated by extending the installation dimension by 10 millimeters.
  • The opening height is calculated by expanding the building dimension by 5 millimeters.

This gives a door 5 millimeters wide air gap on both sides and upwards. This is ample enough for convenient installation of frames. The following dimensions have been implemented for door openings as preferred sizes:

  • Overall dimensions 62.5 centimeters x 200.0 centimeters gives a nominal size of 63.5 centimeters x 200.5 centimeters
  • Overall dimensions 75.0 centimeters x 200.0 centimeters gives a nominal size of 76.0 centimeters x 200.5 centimeters
  • Overall dimensions 87.5 centimeters x 200.0 centimeters gives a nominal size of 88.5 centimeters x 200.5 centimeters
  • Building gauge 100.0 centimeters x 200.0 centimeters gives a nominal size of 101.0 centimeters x 200.5 centimeters
  • Installation dimensions 112.5 centimeters x 200.0 centimeters gives a nominal size of 113.5 centimeters x 200.5 centimeters

It is advisable in new buildings, however, to increase the door heights to the next larger structural dimension of 212.50 centimeters. This reflects the fact that people in Europe are still gaining body length in every generation.

window sizes

The handful of door measurements faces a selection of standard sizes of windows that could hardly be larger. This wide selection makes sense: windows have to fulfill a variety of functions. In addition to the incidence of light they must also allow ventilation, serve as pure viewing windows or allow monitoring of a specific point. So that the right window can be found for every application, the standard offers a large selection of sizes. Also the window dimensions are always a multiple of the one-eighth meter, the basic measure of everything on the construction.

The standard sizes of the shell dimensions for windows are again the nominal size plus circumferential gap of 10 millimeters. However, it is quite easy to extend the measure by another 5 millimeters. The opening must not be too narrow, otherwise the windows must be laboriously pried before installation.

Structural work Modular dimensions

Due to the huge selection of available guideline sizes, it is easier to divide them according to straightening heights and straightening widths. So you can always determine the perfect combination for his needs.

Richthehen for windows

The standard heights for shell openings of windows are:

  • 375 millimeters
  • 500 millimeters
  • 625 millimeters
  • 750 millimeters
  • 825 millimeters
  • 1000 millimeters
  • 1125 millimeters
  • 1250 millimeters
  • 1375 millimeters
  • 1500 mm
  • 1625 millimeters
  • 2000 millimeters
  • 2125 millimeters
  • 2250 millimeters

Each window, no matter which width, can be ordered in these heights. This makes it possible to produce suitable natural light sources for dark, narrow corners.

Rich widths for windows

In terms of width, the standard distinguishes between single-leaf and double-leaf windows. This prevents the windows from being too large and heavy. Otherwise, a window sash that is too heavy could tear out and even damage the masonry.

For single-leaf windows, the following rough construction guidelines apply in width:

  • 375 millimeters
  • 500 millimeters
  • 625 millimeters
  • 750 millimeters
  • 875 millimeters

For double-leaf windows, the standard offers the following basic structural dimensions in width:

  • 875 millimeters
  • 1000 millimeters
  • 1125 millimeters
  • 1250 millimeters
  • 1325 millimeters

It is striking that the width of 875 millimeters occurs in both standards. This overlap dimension is allowed for both single-leaf and double-leaf windows.

These measurements result in a selection of 126 different window sizes. This is more than sufficient for the vast majority of construction projects.

If you need even wider windows, you can install three- and four-leaf windows. Again, the standard offers the appropriate dimensions. Even with these large light openings, the entire range of window heights from the named 375 to 2250 millimeters is permitted. At widths, the standard offers the following dimensions:

Three-winged windows

  • 1500 mm
  • 1625 millimeters
  • 1750 millimeters
  • 1875 millimeters

Four-leaf windows

  • 2000 millimeters
  • 2125 millimeters
  • 2250 millimeters

So you get a selection of 98 possible combinations even with these large windows.

Standard window

In order not to be completely confused by the huge selection, we would like to mention the most common window sizes for defined purposes. These windows are made in the largest quantities and are therefore always very cheap. Before the costs for the new building run out of control, just take a look and see if they can reach a standard size by adjusting the window sizes. You will be astonished how much money you can save with it. However, the guideline is always: The window area should always be at least 20% of the floor space of the room. This guarantees a pleasant illumination. This value can be exceeded as desired, but it should not be smaller. However, depending on the state, only a value of 10 - 12.5% is required. As a rule, such small windows can only serve as a peephole.

The most sold windows for normal rooms have the dimensions (in 100-millimeter increments):

Single leaf

  • Width: 1000 - 1700 millimeters
  • Height: 600 - 1500 mm

double leaf

  • Width: 1800 - 2400 mm
  • Height: 600 - 1500 mm

Balcony door single-leaf

  • Width: 900 and 1000 mm
  • Height: 2000 - 2200 mm

Tip: Instead of investing in extravagant window sizes, choosing a standard size offers considerable advantages. The windows can be upgraded better with special coatings or improved burglary protection. That makes more sense than a special measure. In addition, the trade also offers very interesting window shapes in special design: round and pointed arches, circular windows and much more is also very inexpensive today directly from the factory. This can give each house a very special, individual touch.
