Persistent smell of cigarette smoke in the apartment is a nuisance, because this greatly limits the quality of living. The smoke nestles in wallpaper, furniture and even walls or doors. Fortunately, there are natural remedies for fighting cold smells that make your home more liveable. How this happens, we explain in detail in our guide "Remove smoke smell from the apartment".

To free an apartment from the cold smell of smoke makes sense, especially when the residents change or a current resident quits smoking. In such cases, it is good to make a cut and give the apartment a new level of quality. Since smelling the smell in all furnishings and in the basic substances of the building, a basic cleaning is unfortunately inevitable. Carpets, walls, curtains or furniture absorb the smoke and must be thoroughly treated. Home remedies such as vinegar or rose water are needed just as much as spray extraction equipment for textiles. The effort can vary greatly depending on the smoke load.

Prevent smoke smell

Before removing the penetrating smell of cigarette smoke, we give some hints on how to avoid smoking smell in principle. When smoking, care should be taken that as much as possible only one room in the apartment is claimed. If the door is permanently closed, surrounding rooms are usually affected very little. If the used room is still tiled, the smoke can be removed very quickly.

Another advantage is achieved when cigarette remains are removed directly from the apartment and also the ashtray is washed directly and disappears again in the closet. The smell of used butts or cold ashes can be prevented. When circumstances permit, the window should always be opened during smoking so that the smoke particles do not remain completely in the home. As a last note, the curtains are mentioned here. These attract smoke smell and should be washed regularly, whereby the smell can be carried out quickly from the flat.

Tip: Ashtrays that are filled with a little water help to keep the ashes from swirling through the entire room when drafted.

Remove slight odors

If the apartment is only slightly affected by the smell of cigarettes, then these odors can be removed in a few simple steps. This cleaning is done with the help of vinegar water . For this purpose, water is mixed with vinegar and placed in an open dish. This bowl has to be effective in a polluted room, which can take up to 48 hours. Then the smell should have escaped, as the vinegar water can counteract even with a slight infestation of walls and furniture. If you can not make friends with alternative vinegar, it is recommended to mix it with lemon juice as it has a similar (though weakened) cigarette smoking property. In particular, if upholstery or textiles are affected, it is possible to rain the cleansing essence with a spray bottle on the affected pieces. As a result, these are not destroyed immediately, but still get a pleasant smell.

Tip: A quick effect reaches the vinegar or lemon water, if it has been boiled before. Under these circumstances, a quick treatment can be sufficient within twelve hours.

Free furniture from the smell of smoke

Cleaning furniture is a real challenge, depending on the material. Open-pore materials such as wood, stone or textile absorb the smell of smoke very strongly and intensively. Furniture, which stood in smoky rooms for years, can not be easily renovated. With luck many smooth surfaces like wood or ceramics are present. In such cases, they are simply washed off thoroughly with conventional cleaning agents and then dried well. The smoke particles can be easily wiped away in this way. The situation is different with porous materials. These have closed the smoke deeply and must therefore be treated. The best home remedy for this work Rosenöl is suitable. The furniture must be rubbed several times with the oil at a distance of two to three days. The substance penetrates into the pores and covers itself over the smoke particles, whereby the furniture receives a pleasant smell.

Bring textiles to perfume

Anyone who has been too close to a campfire knows how quickly textiles absorb smoke. As with clothing, curtains, pillows, upholstery or carpets are the same. It is easy if the appropriate textiles can be put into the washing machine, since this works most effectively. All textiles that are not suitable for the washing machine can be treated in a first step with vinegar, but only succeed at low smoke exposure. Home remedies easily reach their limits here, which is why many homeowners have to resort to a professional device. The spray extractor cleans carpets and upholstery except for the fibers. As the name implies, this device sprays a cleaning solution deep into the carpet or upholstery. Via a second pipe this machine sucks up the polluted water again. This process can be repeated as often as desired and, if necessary, in different directions of the carpet fibers.

Tip: The processing of a carpet should always be done from the window to the door. This is the only way to prevent the cleaned carpet from entering again immediately. This may only be done after complete drying.

Edit floors and sockets

One thing that belongs to the detail cleaning is the preparation of sockets and light switches. These can easily be unscrewed and then cleaned in a washing cycle of the dishwasher . It is more difficult at the bottom. How carpets can be cleaned is described in the previous step. If the room is tiled, deposits of cigarette smell are constantly removed when wiping. A permanent load can not arise in this way. However, things look different with parquet and linoleum. These floor coverings absorb smoke intensively and internalize it in the smallest pores. Unfortunately, a cleaning of these floors is hardly possible. Parquet needs to be sanded, while the linoleum only has the possibility of a complete exchange.

Tip: Before removing the sockets and light switches, the fuse in the apartment and house should be switched off. In addition, make sure that the parts are completely dry before they are re-attached to the circuit.

Core renovation of the walls

Probably the biggest challenge in renovating smoking apartments is in the walls. Walls and wallpaper absorb the smell of smoke over the years and have it deep inside. A cleaning of plaster or wallpaper is unfortunately not possible. The deposits are water-soluble, which means that when sweeping over the odor particles are briefly dissolved in the paint, but then sit directly back on the wall or the wallpaper. Also it is not done with simple wallpapering. In such a case, the odors of the old wallpaper disappear, but the particles remain in the wall. To make matters worse, that the wallpaper paste on the wall lead deposits of tobacco smoke from the wall on the surface pulls and thus they are again harmful to health on the outer wall.

One way to counteract all these problems is the anti-nicotine color . These nicotine barriers are made of thick synthetic resin and trap the residue in the wall. Here it is important that an old wallpaper, which is heavily burdened by smoke, is removed in advance. Problem with the anti-nicotine color is the change in the building fabric. The walls no longer have the ability to control their moisture regulation. Molds can form faster and the humidity in the room is no longer optimal. For a clean solution in the end so only the core renovation, where both wallpaper, as well as the first layer of plaster of the walls are removed and completely renewed.

The pro comes with ozone

If all home remedies do not help, then the ozone treatment by the professional can be claimed. This combats the smell with an ozone device, which is also used after fires. The oxygen in the air is split into ozone. This ozone binds odor particles, which are then sucked in. An air exchange takes place, in which the odors are removed. But even this possibility offers no guaranteed success. Odor particles that are deeply bound in walls, floors and furniture are usually not absorbed by an air exchange during ozone treatment. In such cases, a core renovation of plaster, floor and door fittings must actually be made. This is expensive and expensive, but definitely successful. After that, however, should no longer be used to the cigarette, otherwise all the trouble was in vain.
