With the crochet technique Amigurumi you can easily crochet different animals or objects. They are often used as cuddly toys or toys, but can also be used for decoration. In this article you will find two instructions for rather rare cuddly toys: octopus and jellyfish. As decoration, in the form of a mobile or as a cat toy, they are real eye-catchers.

Unlike their living colleagues from the sea, Amigurumi octopuses and whales are not at all slippery or even dangerous. With their long tentacles and tentacles they exert a great fascination for toddlers and playful pets. Always make sure that you only play under supervision! Although octopus and jellyfish are quite stable depending on the wool used, an arm can fall off or an eye can break under extreme load. The safest thing is your Amigurumi, if you make a pretty mobile out of it. That's nice to look at and can hang out of reach.

First of all, let's give you a brief explanation of the instructions in the two instructions: In principle, crochet round-knit Amigurumi in rounds - in this case in spiral rounds .

Note: Spiral rounds will move one round to the next. There is no clear demarcation to recognize.

The rounds can be bigger or smaller. This is how the shape is created. We indicate for each round whether and how many stitches you need to increase or decrease. At the end of the line you will find in the bracket the total number of stitches in each round. To "double" stitches means crocheting two stitches in a stitch of the preliminary round. To reduce the number of stitches, crochet two stitches together . This means that you can pick the thread for a tight loop through two stitches in a row. There are then three instead of two loops on the crochet hook.

Material and preparation

Crochet Amigurumi octopus

This sweet little octopus with her eight arms and cute face is a good model for newbies in the world of Amigurumi. The material is manageable and in case of doubt also do it remains of wool. By the eyes you can decide whether you prefer to embroider or use safety eyes.

Material:

  • pink crochet yarn
  • matching crochet hook
  • a pair of safety eyes
  • filling material
  • Safety eyes (Ø 6 mm)
  • black yarn
  • wool needle

We decided on a cuddly variant of the octopus. For this we use merino wool (160 m / 50 g). The right needle size is a 3.5 . So the body of the octopus is about 7 cm long. The arms measure another 8 cm .

Prior knowledge:

  • thread ring
  • strong stitches
  • stitches
  • chain stitches
  • rod

The body

Start with a thread ring with 6 fixed stitches. This is the first round .

2nd round: Double every stitch. (12)

3rd round: Double every 2nd stitch. (18)
4th round: Now every 3rd stitch is doubled. (24)
5th round: Double every 4th stitch. (30)
Round 6: Crochet a tight stitch into each stitch. (30)

Round 7: Double every 5th stitch. (36)
Round 8: Crochet a single crochet stitch into each stitch. (36)
9th round: Increase the round one last time by 6 stitches by doubling every 6th stitch. (42)

10th - 12th round: Crochet a tight stitch into each stitch. (42)

Now we have reached the maximum extent. It starts the decreases.
Round 13: Round: Crochet every 6th and 7th stitch together. (36)
14th & 15th round: There is a tight stitch in each stitch. (36)
Round 16: Summarize every 5th and 6th stitch. (30)
17th round: Crochet a tight stitch into each stitch. (30)
Round 18: Crochet every 4th and 5th stitch together. (24)

19th round: Make a tight stitch per stitch. (24)
Round 20: Summarize every 3rd and 4th stitch. (18)
Round 21: Crochet a tight stitch into each stitch. (18)
Round 22: Crochet every 2nd and 3rd stitch together. (12)

Now you have reached the narrowest point of the octopus. They expand the body a little before the tentacles begin.

Round 23: Double every 2nd stitch. (18)
Round 24: Double every 3rd stitch. (24)

The poor

Make a chain stitch in the next stitch. It follows a chain with 32 air meshes. Crochet a chopstick into the third last stitch. Now take turns and make two sticks in each bubble.

Crochet only one stick at a time in the last four stitches. Fix the arm to the body by skipping a stitch from the beginning of the chain and crocheting a loop in the next stitch.

Crochet a chain stitch into the next stitch and continue with a chain of 32 stitches. Altogether, 8 arms can be accommodated. After the last arm cut the thread and pull it through the last stitch. Overcast it on the inside of the octopus.

It is time to attach the safety eyes. Between the twelfth and thirteenth round, attach them about five stitches apart. If you would rather embroider on the eyes, you can do that at the very end in the same places. Plug the octopus with the filling material .

To close, crochet a small slice. Follow the first three rounds of the body. At the end, make another slit stitch and cut the thread off generously. Pull it through the last stitch and thread it into the wool needle. Now sew the disk around in the body opening between the arms.

Note: Make sure that the stitches are not visible from the outside.

Finally, your octopus still gets a mouth in V-shape about four rows below the eyes out of black yarn. Now he is smiling friendly and is ready for his first game.

Material and preparation

Crochet the Amigurumi jellyfish

The jellyfish is very similar to the octopus when crocheting. Only her body is crocheted a little bit larger, which is why the disc has to be wider to close. At the end attach the tentacles.

Material:

  • green and white crochet yarn
  • matching crochet hook
  • wool needle
  • filling material

Also for the jellyfish we used soft merino yarn (160 m / 50 g). With a needle size of 3, the body grows to a diameter of 7.5 cm . The tentacles are between 12 cm and 20 cm long.

Prior knowledge:

  • thread ring
  • strong stitches
  • stitches
  • half sticks
  • whole chopsticks

Upper body part

Start with a thread ring with 8 strong stitches.

2nd round: Double every stitch. (16)

3rd round: Double every 2nd stitch. (24)
4th Round: Crochet two stitches in each 3rd stitch. (32)
5th round: Double every 4th stitch. (40)
Round 6: Crochet two stitches in each 5th stitch. (48)

7th - 11th round: Make a tight stitch in each stitch. (48)

Round 12: Double every 6th stitch. (56)
Round 13: Crochet a stitch into each stitch. (56)

The 14th round is the most complicated round of all. Crochet five sticks into the outer link of the 2nd stitch in the round. It creates a kind of bow. Fix this with a chain stitch in the outer limb of the 4th stitch of the round. There are five more chopsticks in the sixth stitch of the round.

Continue in this pattern the whole round. In total you have 14 arcs at the end.

Note: Normally you pierce through both threads of a stitch. In the 14th round crochet only in the outer limb of the stitch. So they only pierce under a thread.

15th round: Make a stitch in all inner links of the stitches from the 13th round. (56)

Round 16: Summarize every 6th and 7th stitch. (48)

Crochet a warp stitch and suture the thread on the inside of the top.

Lower body part

Crochet rounds 1 through 8 of the top piece. Cut the thread off generously at the end. With it you will later sew the lower part to the upper part.

tentacles

For a tentacle crochet a chain of 40 to 60 stitches. For the back row you can choose between fixed stitches and half sticks. Decide on each tentacle for one of them. Then make a fixed loop / half a bar and two per airlock.

Crochet a total of three green and two white tentacles.

Tip: It looks more exciting if the tentacles are different in length and different in thickness.

Now pull each beginning and end thread of a tentacle close together through the lower part. Tie the threads on the back. So the tentacles hold tight to the body.

Lastly, use the woolen needle to sew the lower part to the upper part. Since both pieces have 48 stitches in the last round, let's stitch together stitch by stitch. If you sewed around three-quarters of the round, stuff the jellyfish with the filler.

At the end knot and sew the remaining thread.

Medusa is ready to go diving!
