Here we show you how fast and easy it is to customize porcelain and ceramics. With porcelain crayons or porcelain paint and brush can be painted in a jiffy ceramic and brighten. Here is the guide.

Some know it from school, while others wonder how quickly and easily cups, plates or muesli bowls can get color. Painting crockery or decorative items such as vases made of porcelain and ceramics is fun for children - and quickly becomes an artistic hobby for creative adults. While the design tools remain in a little elaborate framework, the possibilities of imaginative creations are virtually unlimited!

Give color to the dishes - DIY

When thinking of the great commercially available designs of coffee cups or breakfast bowls, the question quickly arises: why even invest in porcelain or ceramics? ">

Freestyle: the simple method

As the title suggests, freestyle painting is about simply bringing the desired motif onto the porcelain object freehand. We tell you what you basically need, how to do it in practice and, following this tutorial, we suggest various inspirations for successful designs!

Time spent: depending on the size of your design - from 10 minutes to one hour
Material costs: Porcelain can be extremely cheap or expensive - decide for yourself

material

  • plain-colored porcelain
  • matching * porcelain markers (available from different manufacturers online or in the craft supplies, price at about 8 euros for a set of several colors)
  • depending on type of pen: oven for baking *
  • Cotton swabs (best those, with a spatulate and a pointed side)
  • nail polish remover

Comments on the material

I) Color matching in this case means: If you want to paint white porcelain, has relatively free choice - only white pens are logically to avoid. For colorful or even black dishes, the colors should stand out well. Here looks white particularly noble. For a Mediterranean look, the combination of blue and white is recommended.

II) If you do not have an oven, you should choose pens and generally porcelain colors, which are fixed only by an extensive drying time. Many products must be baked in the oven after application, and only then gain their resistance to scratches or the influences of the dishwasher. So: note the label of each pack!

III) It is therefore advisable to stay true to a manufacturer or product type with several colors. Thus, the individual products do not differ in their requirements for drying or baking.

manual

Step 1: Prepare your porcelain for the upcoming embellishment. For the application of the paint, the entire surface must be absolutely free of grease, otherwise the pins will not "grab" properly. Rinse the desired item carefully by hand with a sturdy sponge and abrasive. Then give him extra rubbing alcohol.

Tip: Please do not use the dishwasher for pre-cleaning. Due to the composition of the conventional tabs, a (not perceptible) oily layer could possibly again lay over the porcelain. The same applies to normal hand dishwashing detergent.

Step 2: Let's start: Just like on a normal sheet of paper, you can now easily paint your porcelain with a pen. Try it quietly. Should something go wrong, moisten a ready cotton swab and clean up the surface with it. This works wonderfully.

Tip: If the "Patzer" already dried a bit and proves against the cotton swab but more tenacity than expected, move him with nail polish remover to body. This really removes everything without residue and does not damage the surface.

Step 3: If you are satisfied with your design, this must be fixed. After that, the common colors are even dishwasher safe. How much drying and / or burn-in time is required can be found in the instructions for use of your porcelain crayons.

With a black porcelain pencil you can do a lot, as well as such a great plate in Indian style.

Step 4: If you find that the color intensity is too weak, you can easily reinforce it by applying several layers of paint - painting over the spot several times. Important: This always happens BEFORE drying or baking. After that, the work is finished and can not be varied anymore.

Working with templates

If you want to tackle something "planned" and like floral designs, you should still read the basics of the freestyle section. After that, only a few extra materials are needed to decorate your tableware as if you were the absolute professional in it. The best: Again, you do not need a strong drawing talent, because you work with templates

Time required: between 30 minutes and one hour
Material costs: the colors are around 10 euros

material

  • plain porcelain (or ceramic)
  • Porcelain crayons or porcelain paint
  • if required for the chosen color: oven
  • Cotton swabs to correct
  • scissors
  • brush
  • wooden skewers
  • template
  • duct tape

Letters, shapes

manual

Step 1: First, clean your porcelain as in Step 1 of the Freestyle Guide.

Step 2: Then you need a template that has to be adapted to the size of the ceramic. We decided on a heart. Cut the desired shape out of paper.

Step 3: Then place the template where the outlines should be visible later. To keep the stencil, sprinkle the paper with some water. So this sticks as if by itself on the porcelain. Remove the excess water with a cotton swab so nothing runs off.

Step 4: Now dip the round end of the wooden skewer in the porcelain paint and dab small circles on the porcelain. Very filigree and small dots succeed with the pointed end of the spit. Distribute now around the motif small and slightly larger dots, like in other colors.

Step 5: Allow the paint to dry slightly. Then you can remove the template.

Step 6: With nail polish remover you can now eliminate small bumps.

Tip: With Malerkrepp you can also create great stencils - simply stick the desired shape with the adhesive tape.

Step 7: Now the porcelain has to be dried and the color baked. Please note the information provided by the paint manufacturer on the packaging. We push the cup at 160 ° C for 25 minutes in the oven.

Noble lace pattern

Instead of self-painted flowers, fine lace patterns are even easier to conjure up on the porcelain. In addition to the above materials, you only need:

a) commercial pie topping as well
b) non-permanent (important!) spray adhesive

manual

Step 1: You clean your porcelain in advance as in the previous instructions.

Step 2: Pick up your cake topping. For smaller surfaces you could cut them first. Otherwise, moisten one side with the spray adhesive and fix it as a template exactly at the point on your porcelain, where later the motif should appear.

Step 3: And now you can give the desired color to your Stupfpinsel. This works best with larger brushes by pouring some of it on a plate. Now dab the brush on your stencil. The areas punched out in it will later be seen as a pretty lace design on the surface.

Step 4: Dab as desired over the edges of the cake tip. This gives the whole thing a border - but they still have to help a bit.

Step 5: When the entire stencil is well covered with paint, remove it. To make the border even, align the edges with a cotton swab moistened with nail polish remover or alcohol. After that, nothing should look smeared - unless it pleases - but a thin line should have arisen.

Tip: Especially chic look beyond the edge of reaching out motifs, in which only a part of the top can be seen. Simply place the template halfway along the edge of the template along the edge.

Step 6: Again, this creation will be resistant to hand rinsing and dishwasher by allowing everything to dry long enough or baking in the oven. The exact time or grade information can be found in your product packaging.

By the way: Of course, all three design variants can also be wonderfully combined. Have fun trying!

Shaping ideas

(1) Those who do not see their strength in painting begin with decorative lettering. This can be anything from individual keywords such as GOOD MORNING or LOVE to names and pet names to whole sayings that you like. How about a literarily valuable quote ">

(4) Just individual key words can be applied in a decorative cross-type font. Each letter of a short word (such as "M-Ü-SLI") is generated in large letters from small crosses.

(5) Twisted branches with small leaves or tiny flower tendrils immediately give your design an artistically professional touch and are not hard to paint.

(6) Those who love it minimalist can already achieve great effects with longitudinal lines or dots. Or geometric figures such as triangles and squares are easy to paint. Great acts noble origami design.

(7) Marking talents are, of course, happy about countless possibilities: cute cartoon-style animals with funny slogans, faces or the panorama of streets and rooftops make a stunning impact.

(8) Small borders on top and bottom edges or along a handle also provide a professional framework. Quite simply from short diagonal lines, use small eighth or flowers, checks work as well.
