  • Sew placemats
  • Quick guide

At Christmas everyone wants to have the table nicely decorated and color coordinated. If you are a creative person and have a few hours to spare, you can sew a placemat as a patchwork star or an original placemat for the coming Christmas season.

Today we show you how to sew a patchwork star as a place mat for the dining table.

Tip: You can also use this placemat as a coaster for the following things.

  • flowerpots
  • Candlestick (as protection against wax stains)
  • Cooking or baking containers (to protect the table from the heat)

Material and preparation

Difficulty 4/5
suitable for advanced

Material costs 1/5
0.5 m cotton costs about 5 - 10 €
0.5 m Baby Cord costs about 5 - 12 €

Time required 3/5
2.5 h / Patchwork star

For a placemat in patchwork star shape you need:

  • Classic sewing machine
  • 2 different fabrics (cotton & babycord)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat

The material selection

You need at least 2 different substances.

We chose a cotton fabric with flowers and a baby cord in mint.

The amount of material

We need about 0.5 m of the cotton fabric and then we take our fabric remnants from the cord, since we do not need so much material. Now we cut out of cotton each 6 strips, which are 2 x 20 cm in size and 6 matching rhombuses too. From the second fabric 12 strips are cut in the size of 2 x 20 cm, because our star consists of 6 points. You can set the diamond size for your patchwork star individually or use the template of the following linked article as a rough guide. A similar diamond shape can be found in the star sewing article.

After we sew the front side together, we will finally cut the back of the cotton fabric.

Sew placemats

Sew placemat as a patchwork star

Before we start sewing, we place the six diamonds on the work surface. Then we pick up the first rhombus and put the first strip of cord right over right over the right edge.

Now we sew the two parts together with a simple degree stitch. When we're done, we cut the strips off so the edges continue to run.

Then we put one strip on the left edge right to right and sew it on.

Next we cut off the strips so that the edges of the rhombus continue to run.

Now we sew the strips of cotton on the strips of corduroy. We start at the right edge as before.

When we are done, we sew two strips of corduroy on the right and left edges.

Now our first rhombus is ready. We repeat the whole process with all five other rhombuses.

Now the finished diamonds are sewn together, so that a star is created. We recommend sewing together three diamonds and finally the rest.

Tip: Always sew the diamonds together from the middle.

Note: If you have a lot of time and desire, you can sew the back as well as the front.

Because it is a placemat that is on the table and no one sees the back, we just take the remaining cotton fabric to hand. We put the finished front on the fabric and use it as a pattern for our backside.

We cut the fabric and put the fabrics right to right. Then we sew the star around with the simple degree stitch. Of course, we leave a turning opening free.

Now we turn the fabric to the right and close the turning opening by hand so that the seam is not visible.

The placemat as a sewn patchwork star is finished now!
