Whether for Christmas, for a birthday or as a Valentine's Day gift - small paper boxes are perfect for small surprises. The Japanese folding art "Origami" makes it possible. With just a few simple steps, you can easily fold gift boxes. Of course, the boxes become the right highlights when you use colorful pattern paper. Special origami paper can be bought in well assorted craft shops. And do not worry - the thin paper can handle a lot. You do not need a thick cardboard box for the boxes.

You need:

• 8 sheets of origami paper (4 for the lid, 4 for the bottom)

Now let's show you how to fold an element of the modular origami box. Then repeat this with the remaining seven sheets of paper and put the box together.

Step 1: Place the paper on the table with the beautiful outside facing down. At first, fold the sheet of paper horizontally in the middle and open this fold again.

2nd step: Then fold the upper edge towards the middle fold.

Step 3: Then apply the paper to the back. Now fold the left side on the right side. Open this fold again and return the paper to the front.

Step 4: Now fold the lower left corner up to the next line and along the middle fold.

Step 5: Now turn the paper 180 degrees. Then fold the lower left corner upwards. Fold so that the former left edge closes with the upper edge. Do not fold the complete diagonal, but only to the center, where most of the folds meet.

Step 6: Lift the paper and set it up as follows - the triangular surface protrudes upwards. Pull the fold from the right angle of the triangle. So you've folded an angle of the box. The triangular area lying flat on the table will be folded upwards. The paper should now look like this:

The first element is ready. Repeat steps 1 to 6 with all other sheets. Now the origami box is put together - cover, as well as ground.

The elements are pushed together. Lay the first element in front of you. The second element is rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Push the elements into each other, but not quite. Turn the construct 90 degrees counterclockwise and attach the third element, just like the second one. Repeat this for the fourth element. For the last element, make sure that the tip is centered and up, like all other three points.

Now all four parts can be pushed completely together and the lid is ready. Repeat for the floor - the modular origami box is complete.

• a sheet of square origami paper

Step 1: First fold the paper, which lies downwards with the beautiful outside, once horizontally and once vertically. Open both folds again.

Step 2: Then fold the bottom edge up to the center line and the top edge down so that both meet in the middle. Open the folds again.

Step 3: Now fold the bottom edge up to the first fold line. Thereafter, this fold is opened again. Turn the paper 180 degrees and repeat this process.

Step 4: Now turn the paper 90 degrees. Then fold the right, upper corner inwards to the second line from the right. Repeat for all other three corners.

Step 5: Apply the paper to the back. The fold lines in the middle should be vertical. Fold the lower edge up to the horizontal centerfold. Turn the paper 180 degrees and repeat this process.

Step 6: Now lock the two small triangles like tabs and press the paper flat. Turn the paper over again and repeat the procedure on the other side as well.

Step 7: Then turn the paper over on the back side. The lower two rectangles are now folded once in the middle and horizontally. In doing so, fold up the element folded in step 6. Turn the paper 180 degrees and repeat this step with the other side.

Step 8: Now turn the box 90 degrees. Set up the left and right side panels. Now work with both hands on each side at the same time, only mirrored. Fold up the top two triangular tabs. Fold the pages inwards so that the triangles face down and form another side of the box. This is what the paper looks like now:

9 step: Repeat step 8 on the other side.

Then fold the cap over the box from top to bottom. The lower surface is folded up. Slide this surface into the tabs of the lid.
