The garden is blooming, the sun is shining and you want to make yourself comfortable on your terrace. But disturbs the clearly visible green cover, which spreads joyfully and disturbs the harmony in the own oasis of well-being. How is Moos tackled ">

Moss is a typical sight in the forest, on land or on the facade. There is nothing wrong with the small plants, which spread out like a carpet and look very decorative, depending on the species. Nevertheless, a large spread can interfere, especially if it turns yellowish or in other tones. If the mosses spread so far that other plants are endangered, it is definitely time to remove them. This offers a variety of methods that act quickly and effectively against the mosses. Some of them are even classic home remedies.

Prevent moss infestation

You can save a lot of work by preventing moss infestation. No great steps are needed, but prevention effectively affects and reduces the formation of mosses. To prevent the infestation, long-lasting moisture must be avoided. For example, the green cover hardly forms on surfaces that are constantly in the sun and are quickly dry even after a rainfall. Especially shady locations are affected. You can do the following to reduce the infestation as much as possible:

  • Store garden furniture made of wood or stone dry
  • Dry the garden furniture if necessary
  • Apply impregnation to surfaces and paths that are easily exposed to infestation
  • This is an agent that is applied to the surfaces and seals the material
  • As a result, mosses and other green coverings can hardly settle
  • The impregnation even works against heavy rainfall
  • Alternatively, fill joints and spaces with sand before infestation
  • Sand closes these gaps and the moss can not settle

These are the only methods that are suitable for prevention. Especially the impregnation ensures a good protection, so that the moss does not settle in the joints and cracks of the terrace or paths in the garden. One liter of stone impregnation costs about twelve to 15 euros. With a liter, an area of 5 to 20 m² can be treated, depending on the type of substrate.

Tip: Moss is added to the so-called green cover, which also includes algae, lichens and other microorganisms that contain chlorophyll. For this reason, these plants and living things are always green or yellowish and can be fought with the same methods as the moss.

Remove moss

The removal of the green cover can be achieved easily with different methods. Please note that some methods are easier to use than others, which depends mainly on the strength of the infestation. The home remedies are next to the tools to the gentle variants, since classic moss removers are often based on chemicals. The methods below are for the small and large infestation by mosses or green cover to use and have immediate effect.

scraper

The joint scraper is one of the best-known tools that can be used to remove moss. Due to its shape, it fits perfectly in the joints of flagstones, paving stones, stone tiles and even in the cracks of wooden terraces. Depending on the model, there are joint scratches that consist of several wires, a hook or a curved blade. The use is simple, because you have to introduce the joint scraper only in the joints or gaps and pull hard in your direction. This dissolves the green coating and can then be disposed of. A disadvantage of the Fugenkratzer is the limited use, since it does not work on even surfaces.

Tip: Instead of a joint scraper, you can use a conventional spatula, which also works, only much more strenuous. Since these have a steel blade that can be inserted in cracks and crevices, they act as a possible alternative.

wire brush

Wire brushes, in contrast to joint scrapers, are particularly suitable for surfaces, including furniture, terraces or even stone walls and wooden fences. Be sure to use a wire brush with steel bristles and never use the brush on sensitive surfaces. When you use the brush, all you have to do is apply some force until the greens dissolve. But be forewarned: the physical effort is high.

tillers

Mills are not suitable for terraces, paths or surfaces made of stone or wood. But they are made to remove moss from lawns and other green areas. These can be borrowed, on average 50 euros per day, and are effective against weeds, mosses and other plants that deface or damage the lawn. Alternatively, you can use a scarifier.

Dethatcher

Moss removers are the classic among the means and are offered in abundance in hardware stores and in the specialized trade. There is nothing against using a moss remover, but you should make sure that they are not harmful to the environment. It is advisable to use microorganisms and enzymes based on micro-organisms that gently attack the plants but do not adversely affect the environment. In addition, they are long-lasting and preventive, because the microorganisms accumulate in the soil and act against a new formation. For example, good products come from awiwa, AKB-Chemie, Wolf-Garten, COMPO or CleanPrince. The cost is about 15 euros per bottle (1 liter).

high pressure cleaner

High pressure cleaners for moss removal are a popular means, especially for surfaces. Since the water works with a lot of pressure, the moss is simply removed. You have to cum as a garden hose to the respective sites. Moosreste can then easily remove with a brush. If you remove the joints from the mosses, you usually have to refill them, as they are damaged by the water jet.

home remedies

There are numerous home remedies that can be efficiently used against mosses and thereby achieve a great effect. Compared to the moss removers from the retail trade, these are usually already to be found in the kitchen cabinet or with the cleaning agents, which of course is ideal for immediate use. In addition, they are usually free or generally relatively cheap to buy.

Tip: Cola is recommended as one of the commonly used home remedies because it is mixed with phosphoric acid, which mosses can not tolerate at all. Although this can be achieved quite good results, but ants and insects are attracted in masses and large areas stick together only because of the sugars in the drink.

vinegar

Vinegar is probably one of the most important home remedies and can be used for many tasks in the house and garden. So also for the moss removal. Thanks to the corrosive effect, the plants are permanently "burned" and can be removed in the end without any problems. However, it should not be applied on sensitive stone surfaces, as the vinegar is quite aggressive. Follow the instructions below:

Step 1: For this method you need vinegar, a spray bottle and a brush or alternatively a scraper. It is advisable to use vinegar essence, as this has the greatest effect.

Step 2: Fill the vinegar into the spray bottle and close it. Alternatively, you can dilute small amounts of vinegar with a little water.

3rd step: Spray the vinegar on the affected areas. Then let the vinegar soak for two days. Even larger areas can be treated with vinegar, but these are not really accessible over the exposure time.

Step 4: Select a treatment period in which it does not rain too much. Although the vinegar moves quite quickly into the plants, but the rain can hinder the effect.

Step 5: After about two days you can easily remove the green cover with a brush and rinse with water. Then remove in household waste.

Step 6: As described above, you can now fill sand in the interstices to prevent further infestation.

bicarbonate of soda

Soda, washing soda or soda is also an effective home remedy for moss and general green cover and can be just as easy to use as the vinegar. A big advantage compared to vinegar is the gentle effect. You can apply soda on any surface, it works only on the mosses. In addition, soda leaves no residue. Follow the instructions below to use:

Step 1: For this method you need water, soda and a brush. You should not use kitchen soda, but washing soda, as it has a stronger effect on the plants.

2nd step: Mix 2 g of soda with 1 liter of water. Typically you should immediately use larger amounts of water if you want to remove the moss from large areas. Ten liters are very suitable for this.

Step 3: Slightly loosen the moss with a brush or spatula and then pour the mixture directly onto the green cover. Depending on whether the soda is not to touch other plant, this offers the use of a sponge or a spray bottle, which can be easier to treat individual areas.

Step 4: Wait at least 24 hours. During the waiting period, you can use the brush to tackle the moss.

Step 5: After the exposure time you can simply take the garden hose and rinse off the surface. For extremely stubborn infestation, the high-pressure cleaner also offers.

Step 6: Then you collect the floor covering and dispose of it in the household waste and provide the surface and joints with sand.
