Macramee (Spanish Macramé) is native to the Orient and is said to have found its way to Central Europe via Greece. Other sources say that macrame jewelery was brought to Spain by the Moors. Anyway, it is clear that macrame has developed during weaving. The creative weavers linked the warp threads of the finished weavers' pieces and made them ever more beautiful and artistic. This resulted in a special technique, a separate branch within the handmade macrame. Using the knotting method can conjure up various jewelry and other accessories. We teach you the basic technique of the macrame knot by means of a detailed betexteten and illustrated instructions for a fancy bracelet, which you can create as well as give away. Here we go!

Practice makes perfect - even macrame knotting

Before you start creating the bracelet, you should practice the classic macrame knot that is necessary for this purpose. All you need for this is wool, cords, sisal, leashes, scoubidou bands, parcel tape or similar (about 1 mm thick and 10 m long).

Cut four even bands of your preferred material, each about 1 meter long. Then tie the four ribbons together at one end. Attach the knot side to a heavy object on the table so that the individual straps are taut and can tie you well.

Hint: Maybe you will get along better with the subsequent knot, if you hang up the knot side and act "in the air". Try it out!

Pull the four knotted ribbons together so that they are side by side. The two inner bands are the supporting threads. They will not be processed further. You are only active with the two outer bands that are appropriately called work threads. Ultimately, the macrame technique is about knotting the outer bands around the inner ones.

How it works in detail:

Step 1: Start with the right band. Lay it in a loop over the two middle bands to the left and there under the left outer band.

Step 2: Grab the left band and place it under the two middle straps to the right.

Step 3: Pull the left strap from the back to the front through the loop of the right strap.

Step 4: Grab the ends of the right and left straps and gently tighten the knot formed.

This is the base node that you have already mastered. As a result, there are two ways to proceed:

Braided pattern with twisted knots

a) They always begin to knot on the same side, so the loop always turns to the right or always to the left. In this case, your work becomes a kind of spiral. They create so-called twisted knots .

Braided pattern with straight knots

b) You begin to knot alternately from the right and from the left (or vice versa). Then you get a straight knotted piece with so-called straight knots .

Give yourself plenty of time during your first attempts. Practice until you are reasonably familiar with the technique and can handle it.

Does that work so far ">

Make macrame bracelet

You need this:

  • 3 braids (2 times blue, once white)
  • big pearl
  • scissors
  • lighter
  • Sticky tape or needle to stick

Step 1: In the beginning, take all 3 braids in one hand and arrange them all the same. Measure 13 cm of the bands and knot them all at this point with a knot. Now stick these on the table - fix everything with tape on the table top or stick it with a needle on a piece of styrofoam. So the macrame bracelet can not slip when braiding.

Step 2: Now start with a straight knot as described in our guide. Braid this 2 times. The two outer bands are knotted around the middle.

Step 3: Braid the straight knot until the ribbon has a length of 6 - 7 cm. Half of the macrame bracelet is finished.

Step 4: Now you need the big pearl. Slide these on the middle band. After that, simply tie the straight knot on. The two outer braids surround the pearl.

Step 5: Once the second half has been knotted, the ends of the left and right braids are knotted and cut. With a lighter, the ends merge well and the knot can not open. Unfasten the tape from the table and open the knot from step 1. The two outer ends are also knotted and cut off.

Step 6: If you have done everything right, there is only one thread left at both ends. Put these together and place them parallel to each other. Join both ends together: an additional ribbon, in the same or a different color, is now tied three times with the straight knot around these two ends.

Step 7: Cut off these two ends as well. Slide these straight knots into the middle of the fastener. The ends of the fastener tapes are cut off the same length and knotted twice. Thus, the closure of the bracelet can be adjusted depending on the circumference of the wrist.

The self-made macrame bracelet is finished! Depending on your preference, you can use different colors or materials for the bracelet. If you want, you can weave in even more pearls.

  • Place left thread over the right one
  • Then put the left work thread under all the straps
  • Pull left work thread up through the loop of the right hand thread
  • Pull at the ends of the two work threads (base node is created)
  • Always start on the same side = twisted knot (spiral)
  • Start alternately from right and left = straight knot (straight line)
