A cap not only keeps your head and ears warm, it keeps your whole body warm. In addition to the warming function, the hat is also a trendy fashion accessory that adds a variety of outfits tastefully. In this guide, we'll explain how to easily knit a beautiful, warm long beanie for cold winter days.

To knit a long beanie is totally easy and definitely suitable for beginners. There are different approaches. In this beginner's guide we use a circular needle. On the one hand, it is easier to handle than a double needle game. Compared to the possibility of knitting the hat open on 2 needles, save yourself with the circular needle the final sewing together. With regard to the thickness of the wool and the color is in principle conceivable, what pleases. This guide is about a cuddly warm long beanie that leaves enough space for long hair at the top of your head.

Material for knitted long beanie

  • 100 g of wool with one-layer cuff
    OR 150 g wool with double cuff with a running length of 100 m per 100 g
  • 1 circular needle size 7, 8 or 9 with 60 cm
  • 1 woolen needle

With the circular needle you can also use a length of 80 cm. But since this is much longer than the head circumference, the leash is always out in one place in the round and must be tightened regularly. Therefore, especially beginners with the shorter circular needles are easier, which is why we recommend them in this guide.

The material specification regarding the wool is only a suggestion. With this thick wool, the Long Beanie is really suitable for winter. If you prefer to knit a cap that is suitable for the transitional periods, use thinner wool. Adjust the size of the circular needle accordingly. The heat behavior can also vary over the material of the wool. The wool used in this manual is about 50% virgin wool and 50% acrylic. The higher the synthetic fiber , the less the cap warms. For that she is more comfortable to wear. You definitely do not want to feel 100% virgin wool permanently on your skin on the head. That can be very uncomfortable.

Note: The more virgin wool is contained, the warmer, but also the cap gets scratchier.

It is also possible to take a wool with a higher synthetic fiber for the cuff, and to choose another wool with a higher percentage of virgin wool for the rest of the long beanie. Try in the wool business in peace and take the various fibers in the hand. Sometimes there are also knits from the different yarns, which they can touch extensively. Especially beginners are often unaware of how much the type of wool influences the wearing comfort of the piece.

  • left stitches
  • circular knitting
  • Knit 2 stitches together to the right

Basically, the requirements for knitting skills for a long beanie are minimal. This makes them the ideal exercise project with a quick sense of achievement for beginners. Before you can get started with the actual knitting, you must make a stitch test.

swatch

First, knit a specimen with the wool and circular needle you want to use for the hat. The rectangle should be knit smooth right at least 10 cm wide and 10 cm high. From the sample, measure how many stitches you need to make for a width of 10 cm. Similarly, count the rows for a height of 10 cm. In our example, 11 knitted stitches make 10 cm. 20 rows correspond to 10 cm height. Since we're knitting a long beanie that's supposed to be longer than your head is high, you do not have to measure and count so well here. It is always clearer to try on the cap while knitting every now and then.

Determination of the head circumference

The essential part of knitting the hat is the stitch stop. To find out how many stitches you need to hit, measure the circumference of the head with a tape measure. Alternatively, a fixed string, which you put around the head and whose length you measure then with ruler or ruler. In our instructions, the head circumference is 56 cm. Because we knit the cuffs elastically and the wool itself is also elastic, you can subtly relax 2-3 cm. This leaves about 53 cm left. If we take 5.3 x 11 stitches we get 58.3 or 60 stitches. Round up your calculated number of stitches to a result that is divisible by 4.

casting on

We take both ends of the circular needle to hit the 60 stitches to get a nice stretchy cuff. Beginners can practice the standard approach to stitching. If you are a bit safer knitting, you can try this manual for a special variant that makes the attack even more flexible: Doubling the thread to a length of just under 1 m. Hit the first stitch just past the end of the thread with both threads. Now pass the single thread over the index finger and the double thread over the thumb.

The short overhanging piece is held in place initially with your right hand so that it does not get in the way. Now you proceed as in the conventional mesh stop. The only difference is that the thumb thread is double.

Simple or double cuff

The cuff gives you the choice between a single-ply and a double cuff. Here we give you the instructions for both variants:

As usual, carefully remove one of the two knitting needles from the damaged stitches and close the stop round with a right-hand stitch in the first stitched stitch.

This is followed by another right stitch, then 2 left stitches. Now it goes round by round in the cuff pattern 2 left, 2 right until you have reached a height of about 7 cm. If you only want a single-layer cuff, continue directly with the pattern as described in 5. above.

For extra warm ears and forehead knit a long beanie with 2-layer cuffs. Now knit 2 rounds to the right. This results in a nice edge on which the cuff kinks automatically. Then continue the crease pattern with 2 left, 2 right over another 6 to 7 cm.

The pattern guide also requires only left and right stitches. As can be seen in the photo, it results in a rectangle pattern with alternately smooth left and smooth right surface. To achieve this, we have divided our cap into 6 sections of 10 meshes. For every 6 rounds knit 10 stitches on the right, then 10 stitches on the left. You only have to count in the first round. Then knit the stitches over the next 5 rounds as they appear. After a total of 6 rounds is changed: In the 7th round you knit all stitches appearing on the left and all left stitches on the right. In the 8th to 12th round knit the stitches the way they appear.

If you have struck more or less than 60 stitches, you must choose a different width for the boxes. At 68 stitches, for example, would offer a width of 12. If you would like to narrow the boxes, 6 stitches would also be possible. You can also vary in height according to your own taste. Maybe you change the rhythm every 4 laps or just every 8 laps "> color change

Overall, the height of your long beanie depends on the head you are knitting for. Since the purpose of a long beanie is that it does not fit snugly on top of the head, but kinks backwards and possibly leaves room for the ponytail, there is no strict indication of how many rounds you should move from pattern to decline. Beginners might prefer to keep the long beanie shorter, while the more experienced lay it out.

To spice up the cap, you can knit a few rounds in a different color when it goes to the end of the head. In our example we knitted 6 rounds in gray. These 6 rounds are knit smooth right. In the 6th round knit 2 stitches together in the middle of the previous box. This is how you reduce the mesh count slowly. In our cap the 5th and 6th stitch were knitted together from the beginning of the round on the right. From then on, every 9th and 10th stitch was knitted together.

After 6 rounds, switch back to the starting color and knit one or two more sections with the staggered rectangles. Now these are a stitch narrower, so only 9 instead of 10 stitches wide.

graduation

For the conclusion you use again the alternative color. Change the wool after the last round of the rectangle and knit a round smooth right in gray. In the next round, knit every 2nd and 3rd stitch together to the right. So you follow the pattern: 1 right, 2 right together, 1 right, 2 right together and so on.

Tip: If the round knitting needle becomes too narrow in the end, simply use a double pointed needles game for the last few rounds.

This is followed by a round in right-hand stitches, another round after the acceptance pattern just described and a round with right-hand stitches. If the remaining opening is already quite small, you can stop directly. If it is still very big, knit another round, knitting 2 stitches to the right.

When finished, cut off the thread generously and thread it into the woolen needle. Take one stitch after the other with the wool needle from the circular needle until all remaining stitches are on the thread. Tighten firmly so the hole closes. Pierce through the hole on the inside of the cap and sew the thread there.
