Llamas are the last cry. Their fluffy, grinning wool ball did not reach their status as animal of the year 2018 in vain. More and more farmers in Germany are switching to the keeping of llamas and alpacas. Both have in common that they are easy to keep, look incredibly cute and, on top of that, deliver excellent wool.

Unlike most sheep's wool, alpaca wool is not scratchy at all. It still keeps you warm. In the Andes of South America, home of the camel's little relative, the thick fur protects from icy temperatures and winds. In our crochet tutorial you will learn to crochet such a cuddly lama. Although cotton yarns are widely used in Amigurumi, we have chosen authentic wool with a high proportion of alpaca. Together with the ingenious fur stitches, this llama becomes an irresistible cuddly animal.

Material and preparation

Material for Lama Crochet:

• 50 g brown wool with over 50% alpaca (105m / 50 g)
• Crochet hook size 6
• Embroidery thread in black
• wool needle
• embroidery needle
• stuffing

With the specified wool, the Amigurumi from the sole of the foot to the tip of the ear about 20 cm high. If you do not like to embroider faces, you can deviate from our crochet pattern and use safety eyes. A diameter of 8 mm fits well. For the muzzle, however, there is no alternative to embroidery. It's not that difficult.

If you have never done an amigurumi, you should not start crocheting with the llama. Especially when the coat is a bit tricky. It's better to have a snowman or a snake as your first project.

To crochet the llama, you need the following foreknowledge:

• Increase and decrease stitches

Crochet Lama

This crochet pattern will require you to crochet your head, body, legs, ears, and tail individually for your llama. In the end, put all body parts together to form a complete Amigurumi.

Note: You will take stitches by crocheting 2 sets of stitches evenly in one stitch at a time. To remove stitches, do so by crocheting 2 stitches evenly distributed over the round.

head

For the head, make a thread ring with 6 fixed stitches.

Mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker or a colored thread. Reset the marker at the beginning of each turn. Now you will take stitches over several rounds. In the brackets is in each case how many stitches are in the end in the round.

2nd round: Double every 2nd stitch (9).
3rd round: Double every 3rd stitch (12).
4th and 5th round: Crochet 12 stitches.
Round 6: Double every 3rd stitch (16).
Round 7: Double every 4th stitch (20).
8th - 11th round: Crochet 20 strong stitches.

This is followed by the decreases to the back of the head.

Round 12: Crochet each 3rd and 4th stitch together (15).
Round 13: Crochet every 2nd and 3rd stitch together (10).

Now attach the safety eyes, if you want to use them crocheting the Lama. Loosely stuff your head with cotton wool.

Round 14: Crochet 2 stitches together (6).

Cut the thread generously and pull it through the last stitch. Close the remaining hole by threading the thread with the wool needle through each outer loop.

Then tighten the thread, bring it out through the middle of the last round on the inside and on the side. There you knot the thread and cut it off.

Neck and body

As so often with Amigurumi you start again here with a thread ring with 6 fixed stitches.

2nd round: Double every 2nd stitch (12).
3rd - 10th round: Crochet 12 stitches.

Now you start to crochet the fur for the llama. In principle, the coat is created by an extra round of air mesh, which you insert after every 2 rounds. At the beginning of a coat round, work a warp stitch in the outer thread of the first stitch. Crochet 5 air stitches and then a chain stitch in the outer thread of the next stitch of the round. Continue this change of chain stitch and 5 stitches over the entire round.

The peculiarity of the following round is always that the specified stitches are crocheted only in the inner thread of the penultimate round. In the outer thread, the air mesh is already fixed. In the second round after the pelt round crochet as usual in the whole stitches.

11th round: coat round
12th round: Crochet 12 stitches (in the inner threads of the stitches!).
Round 13: Crochet 3 sts, double the next 6 stitches and finish the round with 3 sts (18).
14th round: pelt round
15th round: Crochet 3 stitches, doubling every 2nd stitch of the next 12 stitches and finish the round with 3 sts (24).
Round 16: Double every 4th stitch (30).
17th round: pelt round
18th and 19th round: Crochet 30 stiches.
Round 20: pelt round
Round 21: Crochet 30 stitches.
Round 22: Crochet 2 stitches 3 times, double every 3 stitches 6 times, and then crochet 3 more stitches each time (30).
Round 23: pelt round
Round 24: Crochet 2 stitches 3 times, double every 3 stitches 6 times, and then crochet 3 more times 2 stitches each (30).
Round 25: Crochet 12 stitches, then gather 6 stitches 6 times and finish the round with 6 stitches (24).
Round 26: pelt round

Round 27: Crochet 9 Stitches, then stitch 2 stitches 6 times and finish the round with 3 Stitched Stitches (18).
Round 28: Summarize every 2nd and 3rd stitch (12).
29th round: fur round

At this point in the crochet pattern, stuff the body with the filling cotton. Pay special attention to filling the neck bulging. He has to be strong enough to wear the big head in the end.

Round 30: Crochet 2 stitches together (6).

Close the rest of the hole, as already described in the head. Now all you have to do is crochet the limbs, the ears and the tail for your llama!

legs

Make a thread ring with 6 fixed stitches.

2nd round: Double every 2nd stitch (9).
3rd round: Double every 3rd stitch (12).
4th - 10th round: Crochet 12 stitches.

Plug out the leg.

Round 11: Crochet 2 stitches together (6).

Cut off the remaining thread generously. The open side is later sewn to the body with this thread and therefore does not have to be closed. Make a total of 4 such legs for your Amigurumi Lama.

ears

Llamas have funny, pointed ears. Especially the size differentiates you quite distinctively from other ungulates such as sheep or horses. How to crochet the big eavesdroppers for your Amigurumi:

Start with a thread ring with 4 fixed stitches.
2nd and 3rd round: Crochet 4 stitches.
4th round: Double every 2nd stitch (6).
5th and 6th round: Crochet 6 stitches.
Round 7: Double every 3rd stitch (8).

Cut the thread and pull it with the wool needle through each 2 opposite stitches. The ear should be closed so flat. Crochet 2 ears for your llama.

tail

If you look closely, you can distinguish llamas from alpacas on the tail. However, the llama is also significantly heavier and taller than the alpaca. Here is the crochet pattern for a typical llama tail:

First crochet a thread ring with 4 sturdy stitches.
2nd & 3rd round: crochet 4 stitches.
4th round: Double every 2nd stitch (6).
5th and 6th round: Crochet 6 stitches.
Round 7: Double every 2nd stitch (9).
8th - 11th round: Crochet 9 stitches.

Flatten the tail like the ears by pulling the thread through the opposite stitches. With the rest of the thread you sew the tail to the body.

face

Depending on how you decide, your Lama already has eyes or not. If not, take the black yarn and embroidery needle at hand at this point in the crochet pattern. Insert into the side of the head and embroider at about halfway up the head. Several stitches across a stitch are sufficient. Guide the thread back to the puncture hole. Knot there beginning and end, cut off the threads and press the knot in the head.

For the nose, proceed analogously with the start and end threads. Embroider a vertical line across the top of your nose. Up and down, 2 dashes each go slightly up to the side.

Now sew the ears to your amigurumi. They come to the edge of the back of the head, just above the eyes. Between the ears you attach a pony made of wool. Take about 8 similarly long threads. Pull the middle of the thread with a crochet hook under a stitch between both ears. Thread the thread ends through the resulting flap. Tighten the whole thing. If all threads are tight, you can trim the pony with scissors.

Assemble amigurumi alpaca

First sew the legs to the bottom of the body. For a stable stand, choose 2 parallel points on the front and back of the underside of the body. Sew one leg between 2 pelt rounds.

The tail comes in the middle in extension of the back to your llama. Between third last and penultimate coat round is a good place.

Finally, the head comes on the neck. Position the head so that the back of the head appears as an extension of the neck. Here you need a lot of stitches, because the head itself is quite heavy.

If your Amugurumi end up tipping your nose instead of stopping, it's worth thinking about weighting. For example, you can place a small stone in the center of the filler in both hind legs. He can not be felt from the outside, but keeps the llama firmly on his feet.

In the end, this sweet, fluffy animal is best suited to be cuddled anyway. Standing on the shelf is a temporary solution, at best.
