Baby blankets are welcome playgrounds for toddlers and babies and invite you to pamper and explore. In this sewing instruction we show you how to sew and then quilt such a baby blanket.

Today I want to show you how they can really sew very fast and easy a nice baby blanket. I'll describe the simplest way in advance, and then I'll show you how to stitch this blanket. Finally, I will describe other variants and details.

Crawling blankets are not only nice to look at in their own use, but also very useful! If you want to have a picnic or go to the lake, the baby can still be comfortable. In addition, she is a very individual and personal gift.

Difficulty level 2/5
(suitable for beginners)

Material costs 2/5
(depending on the choice of fabric between EUR 0, - from the remaining utilization and EUR 40, -)

Time required 1.5 / 5
(including pattern about 2 hours in the simplest variant)

The material selection

In this case, it is best to use a non-stretchy fabric such as cotton or other woven fabric for the top of the playmat. If you would like something more varied and elaborate, you can buy a package of patchwork fabrics. These are due to their high quality and the coordinated colors and designs especially for a beautiful overall picture. They are sold in specialist shops as "Fat Quaters" in a pre-cut in various sizes (usually about half a meter by half a meter).

For the lower part different materials are considered. If you only want to use the playmat in the house, you can, for example, use a beautiful (matching the top) cotton fabric. If you also want to use your blanket outdoors, you may prefer a coated version so that the good piece will not be soaked from below and easy to clean should the floor be dirty.

In any case, a "fullness" is recommended for your Krabbeldecke, since only two thin cotton layers are neither particularly comfortable nor particularly temperature-stable. For this you can use volume fleece as well as an old blanket that does not look very nice anymore. Of course, you can also get specially for this purpose a blanket as a deposit.

Tip: When choosing your insert, please keep in mind that your sewing machine must handle all layers at once.

In keeping with the motto "keep it simple", I have used fleece for my blanket, in which a beautiful, bright, red fabric is already quilted on one side (looks like anorak fabric).

The amount of material and the pattern

Depending on your wishes you need a square or rectangle in the appropriate size including at least 1cm seam allowance. In my case, the crawling blanket should be 100x140cm tall, so need including seam allowance per fabric layer each 103x143cm. Very easily.

Sew baby blanket

First, please finish all pieces of fabric where it is necessary. Especially with cotton fabrics and other woven fabric can be due to stress (eg in the washing machine) loose a lot of threads from the fabric and the seams no longer hold. So you enjoy your playmat for as long as possible, so please take these few extra minutes!

Now I put my three layers of fabric on top of each other. At the bottom is my "fullness", that is the insole that cushions my blanket. Then I put my bottom with the left side down, then I put my outer fabric with the right side down (bottom and outer fabric are thus right to right - each with the "nice" side together.

I like to take a little more seam allowance and cut it off afterwards. This can be very helpful in the following step, if the fabric slips a bit. If the different layers lie on each other and are nicely placed, I fix all layers first in the middle and then circularly outwards with pins, so that nothing can slip later when sewing.

Tip: If you want to make your baby blanket bigger and you want to avoid injuries, you can simply use safety pins instead of pins to fix them; they can not slip out of the fabric so quickly when handling the workpiece.

Now sew around the edges of your outer fabric with a single straight stitch around the entire blanket at about 1 cm from all layers, starting in the middle of a length or width.

For the corners, stop your sewing machine when the needle is about 1cm from the end of the fabric, lower it into the fabric, lift the foot and turn the cover 90 °. Proceed in all four corners. Remember to skip a turnaround. For this should be about 20cm sufficient.

Tip: Ideally, you do not place the turning opening on a corner but on one side, so it is nice to close later.

Now it's time to adjust the seam allowances. To do this, cut around your seam at a distance of about 1cm. The corners can be cut off at an angle of about 1mm from the corner seam.

WATCH OUT! Now remove ALL needles / safety pins from the ceiling, then you can turn the baby blanket through the opening and form the corners nicely.

Now iron the entire ceiling at the top and put the edges on the turning opening nicely.

This makes the manual closure easier. This is now already the turn. How to create an "invisible" seam, I have already described in my tutorial "Dinkelkissen" exactly. It is a so-called ladder seam.

Quilting (quilting)

Now comes another exciting part: quilting. Quilting means that you connect at least two or more layers of fabric (usually three) by sewing them together. In addition I put gladly again all situations firmly, and that I put the pins in this case directly there, where then the seam is to develop. For my baby blanket, I only want three stitching, as it should go quickly and these seams not only serve as an ornament, but also to keep the various layers of fabric in place. I measure each 20cm from the edge - then I've already marked my first two seams. I place another seam in the middle. This seam also ends 20cm from the edge.

And done!

If everything is well pinned, I sew directly with the sewing machine my three stitching and my baby blanket is ready!

Tip: Sew well at the end, so that nothing dissolves!

variations

Apart from the fabric selection, which was already mentioned above, you can - starting from this simple variant - attach additional quilting seams. Gladly, for example, in about 10cm distance from the edge once sewn around. You can also stitch a "grid" or even "Nähmalen", so attach any pattern by stitching.

In addition, a part of the outer fabric or the entire outer fabric may consist of a patchwork and / or applications and embroidery / plots. Again, a "frame" is very popular, in which simply at the top, bottom and sides of a 10-15cm wide strip of fabric (single-color or in a suitable combination fabric) is attached. Here is sewn in each case in the seam shadow (ie in the pressed apart seam allowance from the right side).

You can also sew on the upper and lower fabric left to left (with or without insert) and make a beautiful enclosure. This may need to be pieced, since the circumference of such crawling ceilings is usually more than 140cm. Please take care to consider the additional seam allowances! Detailed instructions can be found in my tutorial "Patchwork Blanket".

Whatever you decide, your baby blanket is a real eye-catcher in any case. It can also be extended as needed by various accessories, such as 3D figures that are fastened by means of snaps or sewn directly fix. Even a knitted cloth is a nice option.

Tip: Please do not use any film for homemade sewn cloths, but only those that are suitable for food, in case it should rip - Babies have pointed teeth! I always have something in my sewing box for such projects, which is available in the larger supermarkets.

Sew knit cloth

By the way, a knitted cloth can simply be sewn just like the baby blanket just described - only in small format. The situation Bratschlauch replaced in this case, the insert and it can also be used stretchable fabrics. In this case, however, please apply iron-on fleece before cutting, so that it remains wrinkle-free. The exact instructions for a self-sewn knitcloth can be found here: //www.zhonyingli.com/knistertuch-naehen/

Just as exciting are simple, turned strips of fabric that are sewn on to give the baby something to grab. As a small extra is also a suitable bag in question, in which the Krabbeldecke can be stowed.

Quick Guide:

1. Select fabrics, finish as required, design outer fabric as desired
2. Cut and stack fabrics (upper and lower fabric right to upper right)
3. Firmly pin all layers and then sew them all around with seam allowance
4. If necessary, adjust seam allowances, bevel corners
5. Turn through the turning opening and close the opening
6. Ironing
7. Quilting / quilting - ready!
