While plastic windows do not need to be painted or treated as often as wood windows, they do bleach or turn yellow over time. Not only dark or colored frames lose their color and look like they are too hot, even the normal white window frames often become dull and unevenly colored. Therefore, we show in the instructions how you can foil or sweep window frames.

Today, it is possible without problems to paint a window frame made of plastic. However, the preliminary work must be carried out accurately and for most paints, a primer is required so that the paint adheres. If it is not known exactly which plastic your window frames are made of, however, painting can be a problem. Although most window frames are made of PVC, you really should know that when choosing your paint finish. For certain plastics, it may therefore be better to foil the window frame. Here we show you with the help of the facts, which frame you paint and which plastic windows may be foiled better.

Preliminary remarks

Costs and craftsmen?

The special durable coatings for plastic are often not very cheap. However, even a high-quality film is not cheap. Of course, the painting would also take over a painting specialist, so you would have higher costs, but at the same time someone who has to give a guarantee on his work. It is similar in the case of foliation, so it is best to approach a specialist who also performs car wrapping. Since the effort and the personal assessment of the experts vary greatly, the costs are also very different. You should therefore get several offers from different companies, so that you can find the cheapest offer.

  • Primer white - 0.4 liter - from 25, 00 Euro
  • Special lacquer plastic - 1 kilo - from about 60, 00 Euro
  • One-coat paint for PVC - 1 liter - from 55, 00 Euro
  • Thick layer paint for PVC - 1 liter - from 27, 00 Euro
  • Foil - 10 centimeters wide - roll 10 meters long - from about 67.00 euros
  • Vehicle foil - 152 centimeters wide - per square meter about 25.00 euros

Which paint adheres to plastic windows?

Of course, it would be ideal if the plastic frame consisted of an ABS plastic. Then you could use the popular products from the car paint shop and have the full range of colors. But there are many good colors and primers for the pretreatment, which is usually used for windows. It is important that you use a resin-based paint. Outside, you can not apply a durable acrylic paint on a plastic surface.

Foil adheres to many surfaces

When foiling it does not matter which plastic the window frame was made of, the film adheres very well to a non-greasy, smooth surface. In addition, the film can be well pressed around the edges, especially if the frame has been slightly warmed up before. In addition, the supernatant can be cut to the millimeter with a sharp cutter. The more carefully you work with the film, the longer the film will last. But you have to be careful to buy foil, which was developed for the outdoor area . Such a film can then hold ten years.

Tip: At first glance, the autofoil seems a bit impractical because of its large width. However, on some windows, there may be larger arches or attached side elements that are wider than the ten inches that a film from the roll is wide. Then you would have to start and it would create a seam through which later dirt and moisture can penetrate. In addition, a film that is used for cars and trucks, much more flexible. It is easier to beat around the edges of the frame and even pull and stretch with some warmth.

Instructions - Paint plastic windows

When painting exterior plastic frames, not only is thorough preparation necessary, you should also protect the paint as you paint. For windows on the ground floor you can set up a folding pavilion or the like, so you have less dirt particles in your fresh paint. If around the pavilion still a fly net is suspended, that can only be of advantage. In any case, you should mask the wall around the frame and protect the window with a foil. In addition, the rubber seals should not be painted with. Therefore, it is necessary to mask these also clean with Malerkrepp.

1. Preliminary work

The first coarse dirt can be scrubbed well with a coarse insect sponge, as it is used in the car cleaning. If scratches are present in the frame, you should soften them with fine sandpaper a little.

Tip: Rough damage to the window frame must first be filled with a corresponding filler. This usually consists of two components and is filled like a normal filler in the roughened place of damage. After drying, this surface should still be aligned with the surface of the frame.

Window frames that are not very old or dirty, you can easily clean with a normal detergent and a little lukewarm water. However, for heavier soiling you need a special plastic cleaner, which should also be antistatic if possible. If there are small stickers or residues of an old foil on the window frame, unfortunately you have no choice but to clean the frame with resin thinner.

2. Sanding the surfaces

The surface should be slightly roughened, but not like a wooden frame sanded properly. Therefore, it is better to go over the frame with a light hand and a fine sandpaper instead of an electric grinder. An older, anyway slightly porous plastic frame may not need to be sanded because it has a rather velvety surface anyway.

Sand window slightly

3. Priming the plastic

Use a primer that matches the selected paint for the frame. The right primer ensures good adhesion of the new paint. Also use a high-quality paint brush for the primer, so that the surface is as even as possible.

Tip: Read the instructions in your color system carefully. It may be that additionally the sanding of the primer after drying is recommended there. This is not necessary for all products. When in doubt, run your hand over the primer and check how rough it is.

For some products a primer is recommended before the actual primer. It would be better for the end result if you choose a range of products where you do not have to apply as many layers. The more layers that are applied to the frame, the more susceptible it becomes when, for example, when mowing a lawn, a pebble flies against the paint. Thick paint jobs and paint layers then burst easily or get small cracks.

4. Paint plastic windows

Please note the corresponding drying time of the primer. Then the frame is always painted laterally in the longitudinal direction as well as up and down in the transverse direction. The windows have a miter cut in the corners. Here the painting should converge in each case. Therefore, in most cases, the use of a paint brush is better than working with a paint roller. Apply the paint very thinly .

Note the direction of strike

Tip: If the color does not completely cover the first order, that's not really bad. The second coat of paint often makes the window frame perfect. If small paint noses or runners have been created in the first coat of paint, you now have the chance to sand it off.

Instructions - Foiling plastic frames

A decisive advantage of the films is the immediately dry surface. While hair, dust, small leaves and insects like to get lost in the wet paint, the surface of the film remains as clean as you stick it on. Depending on which film is used, however, it may be that the adhesive from the back of the film will later adhere to the frame and need to be sanded before re-foiling or painting the frames. But you have this problem with a paint job as well.

1. Preliminary work

The preliminary work is basically the same as painting the frame. It is important that the frame is dry and free of grease. However, the surface should be very smooth even when gluing a film, because bumps will be visible through the thin film.

clean the windows

2. Stick on the foil

If you are using a large foil, you should roughly cut the required strips. Leave the film about one to two centimeters larger on all sides. Before you stick a strip, you should warm the frame slightly with an old hair dryer. Do not hold the hair dryer on the film, but rather on the frame. Then the backing paper is peeled off and the film is gradually painted on the frame. To do this, use a plastic squeegee, with which you can sweep all the bubbles to the side.

Remove the foil

Tip: The thinner the film you use, the softer the squeegee should be. In the trade, squeegees are available for this purpose, which have a wide rubber lip. This will prevent scratches on the new slide.

The foils for the automotive sector can be pressed by stretching well in joints and edges. This is not so easy with other slides. With a solid film, the surface should first be covered with the film strip and then the edges should be transferred over the entire length with a squeegee. Then paint the film with a soft cloth again. Only then are the protruding strips carefully cut off with a sharp cutter. Immediately after cutting, you should stroke the foil one more time with the cloth. Pay particular attention to the corners and lugs as well as the edges.
