The limestone is an artificial stone, which is made of steamed lime. By adding quartz chippings, the sand-lime brick becomes very pressure-resistant. For a long time, the sand-lime brick was popular for its high compressive strength and excellent soundproofing, but always had to compromise on thermal insulation. Newly developed processes and designs also make the sand-lime brick suitable for thermal insulation in certain applications. However, the sand-lime thermal protection brick is so far only available as a Kimmstein for gas concrete walls.

Properties of limestone stones

For bricks, three different types of thick-bed jointed artificial stones are used:

  • Concrete / pumice
  • bricks
  • calcareous sandstone

Concrete / pumice stones are produced in a cold process by simply pouring a cement-aggregate mixture into a mold and hardening it. This process is cheap and does not pose high technical requirements. However, concrete / pumice have a very poor dimensional stability, which can make up to five millimeters deviation on the same stone. The rough, gray surface is not very popular visually, which is why pumice / concrete blocks are usually plastered or clad.

Concrete formwork stones

Bricks are burned. They are available in many different versions and can offer both high pressure resistance and high thermal insulation. Their dimensional stability is better than that of concrete / pumice stones, but also not optimal. Their characteristic red-brown or yellow-brown color makes them very popular as a rough stone.

brick

Sand-lime bricks are made by steaming. It is a highly specific process that requires a complex system. Sand-lime bricks are as white as snowstones, as heat-shields slightly gray. As ornamental or bricklaying stone, they do not have the widespread use of bricks, but are certainly used for this purpose. However, the pure white coloring necessitates frequent cleaning of a sand-lime visible façade. Very popular are the sand-lime facing bricks, which have the usual high precision on all technically relevant sides, but have a broken edge on the visible side. This creates a very interesting, visual effect that contrasts well with traditional brick-clinker facades.

Sand-lime bricks are very pressure-resistant and ideally suited for fire protection. However, care must be taken that a sufficiently pressure-resistant mortar is used during processing.

Formats of sand-lime bricks

Sand-lime bricks are produced as solid stones, block stones, limestone stones and special stones, for example U-shells. The Kimmsteine are also available as heat protection stones.

KS solid stones and calcareous sand blocks

The limestone sandstone is offered as a normal brick and as an IS stone. IS means "interior visual stone". The stones differ from those by a slightly better look. Dimensions and pressure resistance are identical.

The basic measure for calcareous sandstones is the "thin format". It is abbreviated DF. All other stone formats are defined with a multiple of DF, except for the normal format NF. The normal format NF is based on the traditional brick format and is particularly popular for veneers.

By using the thin format DF as the primary measure for all other stone formats, full variability is guaranteed. Sand-lime bricks can be combined in any way. The DF is again based on the "eighth meter", ie 12.5 cm. Based on the stone measure, the 8th meter is always to be understood as a "stone plus joint". With a joint width of 1 cm, the cubic meter of the stone is therefore 11.5 cm in relation to its width. The same applies to the length: The quarter meter is twice the one-eighth meter. It is again subtracted one centimeter joint width, so the standard length for small bricks is 24 cm.

KS solid stones are available in different versions. The choice is:

  • smooth stones
  • Tongue and groove profiles
  • Tongue and groove profiles with mortar pocket

The simplest design are smooth stones, which consist only of blocks, possibly with handle holes. They are especially useful in the small and medium formats, as they can also be used as a veneer. However, tongue and groove profiles are recommended for efficient construction. These replace the butt joint, which otherwise has to be tackled cumbersome or subsequently filled. Clean pile butt brick, a dry setting of stones in the direction of the butt joint is sufficient. Especially recommended are mixed systems. With these profiles, the stone can be put dry and dry in bursts. But this creates a mortar bag between the stones. This can be easily filled with a trowel mortar. For fire walls, this solution is optimal.

Kimmsteine

KS-Kimmsteine are needed for the construction of walls made of aerated concrete blocks.

KS-Kimmsteine fulfill two tasks:

  • Height compensation for uneven surfaces (eg concrete unfinished floors)
  • thermal insulation

KS-Kimmsteine are used to deliver gas concrete blocks a precisely straight first base layer. Concrete blocks are not bricked in the thick bed, but glued in a thin bed. Height compensation is not possible with the thin-bed adhesive mortar. Before the emergence of the Kimmsteine the thermal bridges at the leveling layer were always a big problem. With the Kalksand-Kimmsteinen an optimal solution was developed for it.

Other sand-lime stone formats

The good properties of sand-lime allow many other formats. U-stones for ring anchors, Rollgurtsteine, angle blocks and many other special stones are available from this building material from the manufacturers.

Dimensions and prices of sand-lime bricks

Somewhat confusing is the apparently low density of the calcareous sand block. However, this is always related to the whole stone. Apart from NF and DF, sand-lime bricks always have generous finger holes and recesses, which significantly reduce the specific density. The stones are thus better to handle. The finger holes are filled with mortar during the wall, which gives the stones the strength of an actual "stone".

Tip: Do not buy lime sandstone in the hardware store, but in the building materials trade. The materials are much cheaper there.

Sand-lime brick - Price overview

This overview is sorted by wall thickness. Units of measurement of the following values are:

  • Dimensions: mm
  • Compressive strength: N / mm²
  • Density: kg / dm³

Wall thickness 11.5 cm

11.5 cm thick walls are not allowed as load-bearing walls. They are used as soundproof, unloaded partitions. However, the NF and DF stones can be laid in a bandage, making walls up to 36.5 cm thick. These are allowed for load-bearing and even for basement walls. However, the printability class of the stones and the mortar must always be chosen to suit the purpose.

Wall thickness 24 cm

The wall thickness of 24 cm is the standard measure for load-bearing walls. They can be constructed from NF, 2DF and 3DF bricks by taking the stones transversely and walling them together in longitudinal and transverse formations. Full walls made of 24 cm strong KSV are optimal in sound and fire protection.

Special stones for 24 cm thick walls are the so-called "building boards". These have the following formats:

The huge 16DF format is still available in places, but is being phased out.

Wall thickness 30 cm

A wall thickness of 30 cm is usually used only in the basement. The so-called "basement stones" calcareous sandstones have a particularly high compressive strength.

A special stone, which was developed exclusively for this 30 cm strong masonry in calcareous sandstone construction, is the 10DF stone. Frequently used for this purpose, the normal 5DF stone format, turns it by 90 ° and selects the maximum compressive strength. Two particularly pressure-resistant variants are available for this purpose:

5DF
up to 20 N / mm²
  • Dimensions: 300 × 240 × 113
  • Compressive strength: 20
  • Density: 2
  • Stone requirement: 32
  • Price: 1, 800 €
10DF
up to 28 N / mm²
  • Dimensions: 300 × 240 × 238

Particularly efficient is the walls of the cellar with the 10DF stone

Kimmsteine

KS-ISO-Kimmsteine have a heat transfer value of R = 0.33 W / mK, a compressive strength of 20 N / mm² and a density of 1.2 kg / dm³.

Customary dimensions, compressive strengths, densities, weights and prices are:
