The real lime paint consists of so-called limestone. Even as a layman, you can make the lime paint yourself. In this guide, we explain how to apply lime paint and do it yourself.

advantages and disadvantages

What advantage does the lime paint ">

What are the disadvantages of lime painting?

Although it is a purely biological color, there are also disadvantages in applying lime paint. There is only a very small choice of colors and the color is very corrosive. Processing must therefore take place under protective measures.
When making your own lime paint, keep in mind that the color pigmentation should not exceed 5 percent. Thus, it is possible to produce pastel colors as much as possible.

substrates

For which substrates is the lime paint suitable?

Not on any surface it makes sense to apply lime paint. Possible substrates include:

  • Plaster of lime, cement and clay
  • Substrate of stone
  • cement
  • sand
  • bricks

The home-made colors are very well suited to the house facade, if there is no strong weather. Also house entrances, kitchens, ceilings and walls can be embellished with a Kalkanstrich.

costs

What are the costs of manufacturing for me ">

What costs arise depends on the material requirements. This, in turn, results from the own claims and the place where the paint is to be applied. Basically, the color requirement is almost always higher than with acrylic paint, since the opacity is lower.

However, if you make your own color, the cost is significantly lower than the color purchased. In addition to the ingredients for the color you need to attach the following material:

  • Paint roller if white lime is used
  • Telescopic pole for high ceilings
  • Paint roller for edge deletion
  • paint tray
  • for colored paints a tassel or brush

Make lime paint

Lime is the main ingredient for the color, best used is burnt lime . This is sold in bags or buckets and is considered very high quality. The material is sulfur-free and almost free of chemicals.

For the mixing of the lime paint you need the following ingredients:

  • Weißkalk
  • wood-burned limestone
  • Pigment color (with bright colors)
  • whisk
  • bucket

As further accessories you need for the painting:

  • Safety glasses, mask and gloves

Lime-based paints are easy to make. You use a large bucket to mix, which you fill with five parts of lime and six parts of water. The resulting paste should be spreadable.

If you want to create a colorful color, you must use lime-free pigment paint. The pigmentation should not be higher than five percent . Stir the pigmentation evenly into the already finished lime paint and let it rest for 24 hours. Regular stirring ensures that the lime does not settle on the bottom of the bucket.

The mixture in fast-forward:

  • put five pieces of lime in a bucket
  • add six parts of water
  • if you want a color, add the color pigmentation evenly
  • stir long and persistently until a creamy paste has formed

Important: Only carry out the mixing work with protective clothing as the lime is highly corrosive.

Various additives to the lime paint

To increase the binding and spreadability of your manufactured paint, you can add different substances. These include:

  • casein
  • linseed oil

Casein additional

With casein you can increase the binding capacity of your color and extend its shelf life. Although casein is also available on the market, it can also be produced by yourself. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Mix 250 grams of skimmed quark with 100 grams of lime
  • stir carefully until a jelly has formed
  • Add the resulting mass to the already mixed lime paint
  • mix the casein mixture well with the color
  • Use the finished paint quickly, as the durability decreases

Linseed oil as an additive

With the addition of linseed oil you can improve the paintability of your paint, and you can mix the new paint from the wall for a long time. In order to add linseed oil, you only need to stir in a proportion of two percent into the already produced paint.

Tips for mixing

Not for all walls is the Kalkanstrich suitable, with wood or stone walls, it can cause difficulties. However, you can make sure that even difficult surfaces can be treated with self-produced paint as soon as the paint is produced. The following tips help:

  • use hot water when mixing
  • Add half a kilo of zinc sulphate per 40 liters of lime paste
  • Mix the finished color with 250 grams of cooking salt
  • Stir well the resulting color and use immediately

Apply lime paint

Depending on the substrate, it may be necessary to treat the walls beforehand. Especially when it comes to absorbent substrates, a preparation is required.

Which walls need to be pretreated ">

Fermacell

Highly absorbent substrates, including plasterboard and Fermacell, should be treated with putty beforehand. If this pretreatment does not last, the lime paint will not stick to the wall.

When applying to old emulsion paint, it is advisable to apply a mineral primer before to increase the adhesion of the paint.

Necessary preliminary work before painting

On wallpaper or latex paints, a coating with lime paste is not possible. These must either be removed or provided with mineral plaster. Before you start painting, make sure the surface is free of grease and dust .

The steps before painting:

  • remove old wallpapers
  • if the wallpaper stays, treat with mineral plaster
  • ensure a fat and dust-free surface

Tip: Immediately before painting, it is recommended to moisten the surface. For this a moist painter roller is optimally suitable.

The painting

Normal white lime is applied as well as emulsion paint. They use a paint roller, the corners are treated with a brush.

You can also use a brush. Use this to paint the color across the wall.

A lime painting is carried out in several stages, four layers are quite common. Always wait between the coats until the previously applied coat has dried completely.

Bring color into play

Color pigments which you add to the color may only be added before the last coat of paint. The first layers are applied with normal white lime.
The last, final layer is applied from top to bottom. In this way, you can prevent shadows or the formation of grooves.

Important: The color may have a different effect, but it settles when drying.

The dry phase

Especially with lime paint, it is very important that the drying process is carried out properly. It is a chemical process that should never be stopped too soon.

The time between two coats should not be less than 24 hours, even if after four hours you feel that the paint has dried.
The temperatures should also be adjusted. Less than seven degrees and more than 18 degrees can negatively affect drying.
