The smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the room. Gorgeous! Now knit something ">
You do not know how to imagine a coffee bean pattern? No problem, because we explain in simple steps how it works. You only need a few techniques that we teach you. As foreknowledge, right and left stitches suffice. Following the classic coffee bean pattern, we introduce you to a version that combines the beans with ribs.
Material and preparation
For beginners, a medium strength yarn is a good choice for practicing the coffee bean pattern. Strength four or five is optimal. Pay attention to the corresponding note on the banderole. Choose simple wool with no special effects to make the pattern stand out.
You need:
- Wool in medium strength
- 1 pair of matching knitting needles
Required techniques
envelope
Lay the thread over the right needle as you can see in the picture. Continue knitting normally. The envelope will give you an extra stitch.
Lift off the stitches
Take the stitch from the left to the right needle without knitting it. For the coffee bean pattern, you need right lifting straps, meaning the thread is behind the work. After two knitted stitches, pull the lifted stitch over the other and drop it. You already know this process from decapping.
Tip: The number of stitches varies due to the envelopes and over-drawn stitches. Count after the first or fourth pattern row, because then the number of the originally struck.
edge stitches
A lifted stitch should not be the first in a row. For a clean edge, make two additional stitches (one at the beginning and end of each row). For example, when knitting coffee beans, knit them in odd rows on the left and in the right side. If you work in rounds, no edge stitches are required.
Coffee beans pattern
The coffee bean pattern is popular for socks, because it can take effect in the smallest space. Since socks are mostly knit, we describe the pattern in rows as well as in rounds.
You need a mesh size that can be divided by four. If you want to knit in rows, you should also make two edge stitches. Note that the pattern starts with a back row, that is, when you work the first, third, etc. rows, look at the back side. To knit the coffee beans in rounds, follow the description.
To knit the coffee bean pattern in rows:
1st row: 2 stitches on the right, 2 stitches on the left
2nd row: 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the left
3rd row: 2 stitches on the right, 3 stitches on the left
4th row: 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the right, cover the stitched stitch, 2 stitches on the left
Repeat the pattern continuously. As you stretch the knit, you will notice small holes in the coffee beans created by the envelopes. Viewed from the back, shows a rib pattern.
To knit the coffee bean pattern in rounds:
1st round: 2 stitches on the right, 2 stitches on the left
2nd round: 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the left
3rd round: 3 stitches on the right, 2 stitches on the left
4th round: Take off 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the right, put on the stitched stitch, 2 stitches on the left
Coffee beans ribs
The coffee beans ribs are a modification of the classic pattern. We combine the beans with normal right-knit ribs. This version is best used on larger surfaces. Your mesh size must divide by 14. Like the coffee bean pattern, you can choose to knit in rows or rounds. If you want to work in rows, remember the edge stitches and note that the first row is a back row.
To knit the coffee bean ribs in rows:
1st row: 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 2 stitches on the left
2nd row: 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
3rd row: 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 3 stitches on the left
4th row: 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the right, cover stitched stitch, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
Repeat the pattern rows over and over again.
This is how the pattern looks.
How to knit the coffee bean ribs in rounds:
1st round: 2 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
2nd round: 1 stitch on the right, 1 turn-up, 1 stitch on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
3rd round: 3 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
4th round: Take off 1 stitch on the right, 2 stitches on the right, pull off the stitched stitch, 4 stitches on the left, 4 stitches on the right, 4 stitches on the left
Possible variations
1st Variation: Knit a striped coffee bean pattern by changing color after every fourth row. You do not need to cut the thread, you can let it hang down sideways until you need the paint again.
Variant 2: Work individual coffee beans into your fabric as desired. For each bean, knit over four loops as described. The background should be smooth left, so knit alternately a row left and right, so that on the front of the knots of the left stitches are visible.
3rd variant: Increase the distance between the coffee bean strands. Knit additional stitches before repeating the four stitches described. Work the spacers in odd rows on the right and in the straight left.
4th Variant: Vary the coffee bean ribs by adding several beans or smooth ribs
follow each other. From the italic marked steps, a bean emerges; the bold stitches make a smooth rib.
5th Variation: If you already know braid knitting, you can combine different braids and the coffee beans into a large pattern ensemble, for example the front of a pullover.
