  • The stripping of cables is one of the most common operations that are used in electrical engineering and are often used in the home. After it has been stripped, strip the cable before you can use it. For this process, a variety of tools are available, especially the classic wire stripper and the strippers. But how are they used?

In order to remove the jacket and the insulation of a cable before use, no electromechanical knowledge is needed. This step is one of the layman easily executable points when laying cables of any kind. Are used for stripping and cable stripping special tools that facilitate this work and prepare the cables safely to use. Depending on these, other tools are used that every DIY enthusiast has in his own workshop.

    Which tool to use?

Preparing cables requires proper tools so that the wires in the cable are not damaged and the interfaces are as clean as possible. This facilitates the connection of the cables to the individual components and can be carried out quickly and easily. The following tools are used:

    Kabelabmantler

    1. Cable stripper (round cut): The cable stripper is one of the most classic tools of the electrician and can be quickly and effectively grooved in a few easy steps to strip off cables. This tool is a device that has a blade and into which the cable can be inserted. Due to the stable device slipping is not possible and the sheathing of the cable is effectively removed. The sensitive wires are not cut off. They have a large range of functions and you must pay attention to the following points:

    • Type of cable that can be worked with the stripper
    • minimum and maximum diameter of the cables
    • manual or automatic adjustment of the blade

Since cable strippers can only be used in their function with a few cable types, you will need the right type for other cables. For this reason, in a large project you may need several dismantlers in different designs to make your job easier. The prices per dismantler are between 8 and 30 euros, depending on the manufacturer, design and quality. The best-known manufacturer for this tool is Jokari, which offers a very wide range of different strippers that are suitable for your projects.

    2. Kabelabmantler (round cut in combination with longitudinal section): this Kabelabmantler is actually the same form of Abmantler as above, but this is provided with an additional blade, which facilitates the removal of the decoating. This blade allows a longitudinal cut through which you simply have to break up after the cut. This is extremely easy and can be mastered with little force. The strippers can be adjusted separately via a small screw and thus adapt perfectly to the cable. The costs are similar to the range for the Abmantler with round cut.

    Abisolierzange

Wire stripper: the wire stripper is also an important tool for electricians. This allows you to strip cables without damaging the wires inside, which are responsible for transmitting the signals. The pliers are provided with a cutting opening in the form of a V, which fits perfectly around the cable and thus allows a quick and clean stripping. They are offered in different variations:

    • manual: the diameter must be set by yourself
    • automatic: the pliers automatically adjust themselves to the diameter of the insulation via blade cassettes
    • Thermal: these are heated and used for special applications

You see, the wire stripper is your best friend when it comes to stripping the cable. They are tuned directly to this work step and can therefore be used without any problems. A great advantage in them the speed combined with security. Even if you strip several cables in a short time, you will not damage the copper wires and work precisely and effectively. In addition, you do not need a lot of power for the pliers, as these are good in the hand and only with the thicker cables require some effort. The cost of a pair of pliers varies greatly between 15 to over 60 euros, depending on the variant you choose.

    Stripping knife

Stripping knife: a stripping knife is a stripping device, but it is used to insulate the cables. For this reason, this is similar to the shrouds in construction, but is not used for the sheath of the cable. Compared to the forceps, the effort is completely human-dependent and therefore this version of stripping is more physically demanding and slower. Nevertheless, the stripping knife works as effectively as the pliers and is usually cheaper, which would favor the purchase of the knife for cost reasons.

If you choose one of these tools, you'll instantly have a tool that can quickly and effectively strip and strip a series of cables one at a time. Even professionals use these tools and they deliver the best results in this area. When selecting the tool, make sure which cross section can be operated. Diameters of 0.5 to 6 mm² are most common, but there are many products that can strip 0.03 to 10 mm² or more. For this reason, you should first check in which thickness the tool can be used. Alternatively, you can use the following classic tools:

    • cutter
    • side cutter
    • sharp pocket knife

If you choose one of these tools, you must be extra careful not to damage the fine wires. Especially when stripping the cable, it is important not to cut too deeply into the insulation, which can happen frequently. Nevertheless, the classic tools can help with a tool shortage and quickly stripping and stripping the cables with a little effort. However, if possible, you should use one of the tools mentioned above to get the best results. The advantage of this is the security of not damaging the cable, even if you spend a lot of power.

Tips: be sure to avoid using classic kitchen knives, saws, or other cutting tools that require more force or movement while cutting. You could damage the inner wires, which must be avoided in order not to restrict the function of the cables.

Strip the cable and strip it off

Stripping and stripping the cable is possible with one of the tools mentioned above within a short time. Even if you have to prepare many cables, the amount of work involved is reduced significantly when one of the professional tools is used. Before you can start stripping and stripping, you should first have the tool handy. Then proceed as follows:

Step 1: Look at the cable and estimate how much of the jacket needs to be removed. The larger and longer the cable, the more you can remove. For very thin cables, just remove them a little at the end, so you do not expose too much of the insulation.

Step 2: Now pick up your tool and sheath the cable. For the cable stripper, simply close it around the cable and turn it around the cable with two turns. With a knife, the side cutter or a cutter on the other hand, you bend the cable easily at the point where the jacket is to be removed and scratch into the surface. Do not cut completely down to the insulation to avoid damaging the copper wires. Now pull off the separated coat with a little force.

Step 3: For a stripper that has an additional longitudinal cut, simply pull the tool back towards you in two turns. This enhances the effect of the device while stripping it off.

4th step: Now the insulation is free, which is held in different colors depending on the type of wire. Now take the wire stripper or the stripping knife to hand and put it in the desired location. Fix the screw if your model has one.

Step 5: Press the forceps with little force, while you need to spend a bit more muscle power on the knife.

Step 6: Now you have uncovered the copper wires and can use the cables.
