A fashionable men's cap is an indispensable accessory in the cold season. What could be more appropriate than to reach for the needles and to knit a man's cap for the loved one? She warms and looks good too. Beginners will get along well with our instructions.

Men's cap knit with circular needle - instructions for beginners

We knitted our men's cap on a circular needle. Circular needles have the advantage that no stitches can slip from the needle and the work loosely in the hand. But the key to a circular needle is, of course, that no seams arise and the work is never turned. It is always worked in rounds.

Important when knitting with a circular needle is that the rope has the correct length for round knitting. That is, the circular needle should fit the scope of the knitting work. In our case that would be the cap circumference. There are circular needles with short ropes that have a length of 40 centimeters. Occasionally, manufacturers offer even shorter ropes.

Material and preparation

Winter hats are like scarves to the accessories, which are worn directly on the skin. You should therefore make sure when choosing the wool, that you knit a soft and supple yarn. Merino wool is perfect for this. The Merino sheep is known for its unique soft wool. This wool warms, insulates and is breathable. For outdoor clothing like a men's cap therefore the perfect wool.

We knitted a new wool blend from LanaGrossa, but again we made sure that the yarn is soft and does not scratch. In the color we have kept covered and selected anthracite.

Our yarn is knitted with a needle size 4 - 4.5 and has a running length of 125 meters.

According to our instructions you need:

  • 80 grams of wool
  • 1 circular needle with a rope length of 40 centimeters
  • the needle size will fit your yarn
  • tape measure

Tip: You can, of course, knit any yarn you like. However, it is important that you knit a stitch with your wool and needle size first.

Only then can you knit the perfect matching men's hat for the desired head size. Especially beginners should not shy away from the stitch test.

And at the same time you can see how the knitting pattern harmonises with your wool.

We have processed two patterns for the men's cap. The cuff pattern and net patent pattern in rounds, both are easy to rework even for beginners. No pattern is a special challenge.

Basics

Basic pattern cuffs

Knitting the cuff with stitched stitches to the right. This type of knitting has the advantage that the right stitches contract again and again and do not wear out.
A right-hand loop is always inserted at the back.

  • 1 stitch crossed right
  • 1 stitch left

Basic pattern net patent

The net patent pattern consists of two rounds:

A round consisting of right-hand stitches and a round consisting of left-hand stitches.

These two rounds alternate constantly. So also the pattern shifts to the right and to the left. It creates a mesh pattern. In our guide, we will describe several rounds for you to get some practice.

The images for the netpatent pattern were knitted with a different wool to make the individual operations more visible.

Tip: Be sure to attach a stitch marker before starting the first stitch. This marker moves in until the end in each round.

Especially for beginners this stitch marker is an important clue.

1 round

  • The start round starts with a left hand round.
  • Knit one stitch left
  • Take the next stitch with the envelope on the left
  • Left mesh
  • Lift off the stitch with the envelope on the left

So you knit the whole round to the end.

2nd round = right round

  • Knit the first stitch on the right.
  • Knit the following stitch with the envelope: Lift the envelope to the left.
  • Knit the stitch on the right. Lift the envelope onto the right needle. While doing so, lift off the envelope as if to the left.
  • Knit next stitch on the right.
  • The following pair of stitched with an envelope: Put the envelope over the loop to the left, so that it can be knitted better.
  • Knit stitch on the right.
  • Turn the envelope over to the right needle as for left-hand knitting.

Knitt this round to the stitch marker in this order.

3rd round = left round

  • Take the first stitch with the envelope on the left.
  • Knit the following stitch, which has an envelope from the preliminary round, on the left.
  • Take off one single stitch with the envelope on the left.
  • The stitch from the preliminary round with envelope, knit together on the left.

Knit off the entire round in this episode.

4th round = right round

  • Knit this round just like the 2nd round.

The only difference is that this round begins with a stitch that has an envelope.

  • Move the envelope to the left.
  • Knit off the stitch on the right.
  • Lift the envelope on the right needle.
  • Knit the following stitch on the right.
  • At the next stitch put the envelope back to the left.
  • Knit the stitch of the envelope on the right.
  • Lift the envelope on the right hand stitch.
  • Knit the next single stitch on the right side.

So continue the entire round until you reach the stitch marker again.

5th round = left round

  • The first stitch has an envelope. Both are knitted together on the left.
  • Take off the following stitch with the envelope on the left.
  • Knitting stitch of the preliminary round on the left.
  • Take the next stitch with the envelope on the left.

Continue until you reach the stitch marker.

6th round = right hand round

  • Knit first stitch on the right.
  • Put the following envelope back over the loop, knit the stitch on the right.
  • Lift the envelope onto the right needle.
  • Knit the next stitch on the right side.

Knit to the stitch marker in this episode.

7th round = left round

Take the first stitch on the left. Knit the following stitch with the envelope on the left side.

8th round = right round

  • Move the envelope to the left.
  • Knit stitch on the right.
  • Have an envelope on the right needle.
  • Knit the following stitch on the right.

9th round = left round

Knitt the first two stitches together on the left. Remove the following stitch as the left stitch.

General:

The entire net patent pattern in rounds always consists of only two rounds, a right-hand round and a left-hand round. It only changes the beginning of the round. So right-hand rounds start once with a right-hand stitch, and the next right-hand round begins with an envelope stitch.

Left rounds start with either the first stitch being lifted off to the left with an envelope, or the first two stitches must be knit together on the left.
If you keep repeating rounds 2/3/4 and 5, you will get the most beautiful net patent pattern in rounds.

Tip: Beginners should create a list when knitting the rounds, which round they are knitting.

If you put aside your work, you'll know exactly which lap you're in and how to continue. Knitted people can see exactly at the individual stitches of the preliminary round whether a right or a left row follows.

If the single stitch in the preliminary round is a right hand stitch, you must start with a left hand round.

If this single stitch is a left stitch, start with a right turn.

Knit men's cap

The featured men's cap fits for a head circumference of 60 centimeters.

Tip: If you knit very tightly, you can knit the men's cap with a larger needle size.

However, if you knit very loosely, it is recommended to knit less than half a needle size than indicated on the yarn banderole. All other knitters knit with the knitting strength indicated on the wool.

Attack:

Hit 80 stitches on the circular needles. Put two stitches back from the right needle tip onto the left needle tip. This completes the round on the circular needle perfectly, it creates no ugly hole.

Start with the cuff pattern:

  • 1 stitch crossed right
  • 1 stitch left

The cuff has a height of 4 centimeters.

Network Patentmuster

Knitt the men's cap in the net patent pattern straight up to the point of acceptance. We knitted 17 centimeters until the first weight loss round. However, this may differ from head to head.

decreasing round

For the cap to get a nice head shape, weight loss should be knitted. For this, the stitches of a round are divided into 5 parts.

For a stitch count of 80 stitches / round, place a stitch marker after every 16th stitch. Now you know exactly where you need to lose weight.

To lose a round, always knit the first two stitches of a split:

  • At the beginning of the round knit the first two stitches together.
  • Knit 14 stitches
  • Knit 2 stitches together after the stitch marker.
  • Continue 14 stitches until the next stitch marker.
  • Knit 2 stitches together.

Knit these and all the following rounds so that you always knit the first two stitches after the marker. To take 5 stitches per round. Knit so many weight loss rounds until you think the perfect cap shape is achieved.

We lost weight until there were only 4 stitches left on each needle. Now cut off the work thread and pull it through all stitches using a darning needle.

Tighten the stitches tightly and sew the thread in the cap inside.
Sew on the initial thread - the men's cap is ready.
