Color is not the same color

If you have built yourself, the problem already knows, if you think you could make your own decisions in your own house, but has the construction authority in almost every decision to have a say. In many development areas, there are extremely narrow building plans. Often, the height of the eaves, the type of hedge and often the color of the façades and roofs are laid down. So if you are planning a radical change and want to paint your home in cozy Swedish red, for example, it may be that this color is not allowed in the development plan.

Tip: As a precaution, always go to the building authority if you want to make a color change and take a look at the development plan . Although this is determined by your community in a statute, but usually must be visible at the building office. Unfortunately, you can not orientate yourself to the colors of the neighboring houses, because not everyone checks before painting, if the color is approved at all. By the way: Calling brings the construction office rarely something, as the employees on the phone can not give binding information.

Costs and prices for the facade design "> You can borrow the scaffolding and possibly have it erected by the scaffolder. However, there are smaller cheap scaffolding, which are offered in the hardware stores for about 300 euros. Such a scaffolding can already do a good job in a normal sized single-family home.

Some homeowners let only a professional painter come for the preparatory work. This can be a good solution in the case of extensive renovations or damage to the façade. After a good preliminary work, the painting is ultimately the easier part of the work. However, do not hesitate to make an offer for the preparatory work and make it clear to the painter that you want to do the painting yourself.

framework
  • Facade cleaner with algicide 10 liters - about 50.00 to 70.00 Euro - 1 liter cleans 10 m²
  • Fassadenfarbe einfach (also suitable as a primer) 15 liters - about 20.00 euros - 1 liter is enough for about 6 m²
  • Facade paint high quality 10 liters - about 70.00 euros - 1 liter is enough for about 7 m²
  • Facade paint with lotus effect 10 liters - about 120.00 Euro - 1 liter is enough for about 5 m²

Cost example for cleaning and painting per square meter

  • Cleaning per m² 0, 60 Euro
  • Primer per m² 0, 23 Euro
  • high quality paint per m² 1.00 Euro (usually two coats are needed!)
  • Cost per m² 1, 83 Euro / 2, 83 Euro
Calculation of the area

That may sound very little, but if you add up all the façade surfaces, even a flat roof bungalow can easily come out with 100 square meters of area that needs to be painted. Do not forget the garage if it is also plastered. It would be funny if the garage is not painted.

Primer saves color and strengthens the surface

The primer is usually much cheaper than a high quality facade paint. Many a facade paint can not be painted durable without a primer. But also for a uniform result and a perfect color image, the primer is responsible. If a comprehensive change in color is desired, you will need a primer. When purchasing the selected facade paint, you should therefore seek advice on whether and which primer harmonizes well with it.

  • Primer ensures durability of the paint
  • Primer saves facade color
  • uniform color image through primer
  • strong color changes only possible with primer
  • Buy primer matching the facade color

Painting the house facade - detailed instructions

The preparatory work covers most of the work involved in painting a house facade. Nevertheless, you should definitely take a lot of time and do the work as thoroughly as possible. This makes itself noticeable later in the durability of the facade paint. With thorough preparatory work, you can rest for the next ten years. In case of bad preparation, you will be back at work the next year.

Old wall paint

Clean facade

The plastered facade should first be thoroughly cleaned. A high-pressure cleaner and a rough brush will help you with this. Stubborn dirt such as moss, lichens or remnants of plants can be scraped off directly with a spatula. You do not have to worry about surface damage now. Putz, who falls in this work, would have soon replaced anyway. Therefore, it is better if it drops now and can be repaired in step two.

Remove dirt and moss in advance

Tip: If you stroke the plaster surface with your hand, you should keep as little of the old paint as possible or the gray plaster on your hand. If you have a really sandy hand after that, it may be that the plaster must first be completely removed. To be sure, you should first scrape over the plaster again with a spatula or a chisel. If the plaster crumbles, you will not be able to avoid plastering the façade again.

Special feature Ivy & Co

Residues of harbor roots of eg ivy or wild wine, can be removed with dry ice blasting. This method does not require any chemicals, but it also has disadvantages. For example, when cleaning with dry ice, care must be taken to avoid damaging the insulation under the facade and this method is very costly. For a fictitious facade of 40m ² more than 1, 200 euros were estimated. After dry ice blasting, the façade must always be repainted. This method is therefore not suitable to get rid of the adhesive roots only.

Mending and preparing

Mostly only minor repairs are needed. Nevertheless, use high-quality products for the repair of cracks and imperfections in the plaster. Let the DIY store tell you which product is suitable for your facade. Before repairing a spot, scrape off all loose bits of plaster from the edges and wet the area with a wide brush. So the new plaster gets better. Rough cracks should be scraped off wide and closed with a flexible filler.

Mending plaster

Tip: If, when moistening the façade, you notice that the plaster absorbs moisture very well, you can not avoid painting a primer. The expensive paint would otherwise go into the plaster without the primer and may not cover even the third strike. In addition, the result would be uneven and streaky.

The windows and doors can be well protected with painters crepe and foil. Other attachments such as the mailbox, lamps or house number should be removed for the revision of the facade. If you ever want to renew one of these utensils, this is a good time, as it leaves no edge of old paint on the surface and can still clean the holes well.

Tip: Cover the surfaces on the floor so that you do not stain your stone slabs or the plants around the house with the paint. Unfortunately, a good façade paint will not be removed from the patio tiles either. In an emergency, old wallpaper rolls that you still have left.

primer

Always start at the top of the facade with the primer. So you automatically skip any blobs as you continue down. Otherwise you would later have to scrape off the blobs with a spatula. In addition, you should always work in full lanes from top to bottom. If this is not possible because of the high altitude, you should just divide the façade on the floors.

Tip: The primer significantly reduces the costs for the facade painting. However, you must plan at least one day more, because the primer should also dry thoroughly before you can start with the right coat of paint.

Fill cracks

Unfortunately, after drying the primer, you may often notice minor defects in the plaster. Take this opportunity and improve the damaged areas now. Unfortunately, you have to let the repaired areas dry again and then again apply primer here.

Painting the facade

Now comes the lightest part of the work. Nevertheless, you should work very carefully. Similar to the primer, always work from top to bottom. If possible, work from side to side as far as possible in whole lanes or at least every floor.

Renewed facade color

Tip: Work can be carried out more easily with a light telescopic rod and a suitable roller. Nevertheless, you should not use the extremely long telescopic pole from the swimming pool, because you will not see your work and the paint would probably be spotty and uneven.
