A plaster facade is very caring, so it is also more expensive to maintain. The original savings will then be used up within a few years. A clinkered facade may be more expensive to build, but clinker not only looks more valuable, they retain their value and substance. Therefore, we show you what to look out for when you want to clink the façade afterwards.

To increase the value of the house, the subsequent Verklinkern the outer facade is a good solution. Behind the new Verklinkerung can also be introduced an effective insulation. This is ideal especially for older houses, where the rooms are already quite small anyway. The insulation of the interior walls in these cases is always associated with a painful loss of living space. The clinker is robust and requires little care. If you are tired of painting the façade or repairing cracks in the plaster, we will show you how the façade is subsequently clinkered.

Straps as an alternative

There is the possibility to make the outer facade in a clinker look, without first learning the masonry craft. This so-called straps are glued to the old facade. These straps are also available in a complete system as Isolierklinker, in which the same insulation of the outer shell is included. However, these glued on straps age very quickly and are then visually no longer comparable to a real clinker wall. In addition, homebuyers are more skeptical about these straps, the value of the house is therefore not increased by these straps.

Development plan and building authority

Each structural change of a residential building is first subject to approval. Therefore, you should first go to the local building authority before you start working. There you can also see the development plan for your building area. Many new construction areas have extremely narrow development plans, in which may even the exact color of the stones or a facade on the house is fixed. You may not even be able to attach clinker to the house in some construction areas. In older building areas, however, the provisions are rarely so narrow. In addition, could be noted in the development plan, how wide the roof overhang must be. So also an important piece of information before you start to brick up the house.

Cost of clinking the house

So that you can roughly estimate the costs of clinking per m², we have listed some sample prices here. If the manufacturer only gives the prices for 1, 000 stones, you need to convert the relevant side length of the stone and its height to determine how many stones per square meter you will need. What good is the amount of stones, if you want to clink your own house ">

Of course, this fits only in this example, the clinker stones are very different in their dimensions. You also need to include some of the blend. This depends on the number of corners of the house and on the skills and experience of the bricklayer. As a home improvement you naturally need a little more. Check if it is possible to return remainders to the manufacturer or the building materials trade if you have bought too many stones.

  • Clinker stone Frisian colorful, extra smooth about 35 Euro per m² expensive
  • Brickstone red-colored about 40 euros per m² expensive
  • Clinker brick bronze-colored about 25 euros per m² expensive
  • Clinker brick vintage (artificially aged) about 60 euros per m² expensive

Tip: If you have experience in the wall, it is, of course, relatively easy to brick up the house yourself. However, anyone who has never bricked, will have some difficulties with the clinker. Depending on which clinker you choose, these may be very rough on the top. Here, the cement sets very easily, which then results in an ugly gray veil of cement after completion. Just inexperienced home improvement but splatter the walls very strong.

Hollow or solid clinker

Not only the firing process in the production of bricks affects the quality of the bricks. Hard-fired bricks are almost indestructible. But they can also be cut much more difficult later. In addition to these solid clinkers, there are also so-called hollow clinker, which are inevitably lighter and not so expensive. Welch e stones you prefer is, to a large extent, a matter of taste. However, the hollow clinker for a beginner a little more difficult to wall, since the joints here usually have to be much narrower.

equipment

In addition to the main cost factor, the clinker bricks, you sometimes need wall anchors and a vapor barrier, which must be installed between masonry and clinker. Both are not big cost factors. But what will burden your budget is sand and cement. The sand supply will cause regionally different costs.

  • Sand sieved 10 m³ regionally different between 100 and 200 euros
  • Sack of cement at 25 pounds from about 8 euros
  • Concrete for foundation depending on compressive strength per m³ from 75 Euro

Cost of a bricklayer

Of course, if you do not quite dare to wall a beautiful house facade with the clinker bricks, you can hire a professional bricklayer or company. The costs are regionally very different, in general, you should hire an experienced company and if possible agree a complete price. So, any problems and delays later will not be so much at your expense. Because even the weather can make a dash through the schedule. If you then have to pay hourly pay, the budget is quickly exhausted.

  • Maurer regional per square meter facade between 40 and 80 euros expensive

Instructions - clink facade

Whether you need additional wall anchors that connect the old and the new brickwork depends to a large extent on the strength of your clinker. But also the height of the clinker wall to be walled plays a decisive role. You should therefore inform yourself about your selected stones and the height of the façade, which is necessary.

1. Create a foundation

In contrast to the installation of clinker straps, you really need a foundation for a real clinker that is to be retrofitted. This must be set up frost-proof. That means that it should be at least 80 inches deep in this country. You should sprinkle the bottom of the foundation with a little bit of gravel before inserting the reinforcement of iron mats or iron into the pit. Then the fresh concrete from your mixing machine is poured into the shuttering of the pit with the wheelbarrow. Use a broomstick to poke something so that the concrete slides down to every corner.

Tip: If you have enough free helpers to quickly pour the foundation, you can also do the pouring of the foundation yourself. However, with a delivery of ready-mixed concrete, you will not be so much more expensive and make sure that the entire quantity can run quickly into the prepared foundation. In addition, the total amount of concrete is of the same quality, which of course is not always guaranteed when mixing in a small mixing machine.

2. Install insulation

Through the Verklinkerung you have the opportunity to install a wall insulation in the desired strength. Most of these systems consist of thick blocks that are simply glued together with a special adhesive. The different manufacturers supply their insulation systems with a manual, these should be carefully studied before bonding.

Tip: Before you start such work, or even choose an insulation system, you should check if you can not get funding for it. The Federal Government and some regional programs sometimes offer relatively high subsidies for subsequent thermal insulation. However, these must always be requested before you start working. Also, the material bill may not have an earlier date, if you want to receive funds - pay attention!

Before selecting the insulation you should look at the roof overhang. Due to the new brick wall in front of the facade, the projection will often have to be lengthened anyway. For many older houses that have been retrofitted with clinker, you can see what it looks like if the roof overhang is not extended. In addition, there is a risk that some of the rainwater penetrates behind the gutter in the brick wall. This would then be damaged quickly in frost. So if a strong insulation to be installed, this strength must be taken into account in addition to the extension of the roof overhang.

3. Wall clinker

The less experience you have in the wall, the smoother the clinker bricks selected should be. Otherwise, spilled cement would settle in the fine pores of the stone as an ugly gray veil. The foundation must be completely dry before you can start the wall. Lay a strip of sealing sheet on the foundation before you fortify the first row. If you have not picked a specific intricate pattern for the veneer, you should join the composite. That is, the gap between the stones of the second row is centered on the underlying clinker.

Tip: Be very careful to stay in this group. Slipping later would create an ugly uneven pattern on the wall. The course would be restless and you would have more problems at the corners with the degree.

If you buy clinker bricks, which are hollow inside, so-called hollow clinker, you should not only buy whole stones, but also half. These stones you can not just cut off at the corners, because then the hollow chambers come to light. But the full clinker you should not cut at the corners, since the surface is designed differently after cutting as after burning the clinker. Try to incorporate the necessary blanks in your pattern, for example, by incorporating the cut stone in every other row on the other side of your house wall.

Tip: The transverse joints should be about one centimeter thick, depending on the clinker. If you get too much cement between the stones or something has fallen on the already finished wall, this must be washed away immediately with a puff and clear water. You should therefore always have a bucket of water and a quast in the masonry.

You do not have to buy an expensive stone cutting machine. With an angle grinder or a flex and a good diamond wheel you achieve the same result. Pay attention to the size of the disc, because you should be able to cut a clinker stone with a cut. If you have to cut from all sides, the cut will be dirty and crooked.

4. Clinker grout

When walling the gap between the stones is never filled completely clean. This must be done later. Allow your new masonry to dry well for a few days to allow the moisture to escape. If the grouting done too early, the moisture can only escape into the old house wall and that is of course not desirable. The joints are filled with grout with the narrow joint trowel. However, the joint filling should jump back a few millimeters. Use the trowel to apply a thick layer of mortar to the masonry board and place it directly under the joint on the wall. Always push some mortar into the joint with the narrow joint trowel. The mortar must be properly pressed in with the joint trowel and pulled smoothly.

Tip: In this work you should also have a narrow brush in addition to the quast. With the tassel again clean the stones of excess mortar with the brush tighten the new mortar joint slightly. Thus, the joint gets a uniform smooth mortar image without paragraphs or Versprünge.
