Remove hairspray stains

preparation

Hairspray spots can appear after a few seconds if you don't accidentally catch your hair. Since the spray is usually sprayed very heavily, it can get to doors, walls, windows and other surfaces with little effort. If this is the case, you must first make certain preparations so that the different materials are not attacked by the cleaning agent used.

The spray sticks strongly in the material and for this reason it is important to use the appropriate agents. Typical materials for walls and doors where the spray could stain are mainly the following.

  • tiling
  • Glass
  • plastic
  • Wood
  • wallpaper

Metal is very rarely used in private rooms when it comes to doors and walls. However, hairspray stains can be easily removed on this with a little washing-up liquid and water, since the styling agent does not really adhere to what you can easily use. The other materials require different cleaning agents and methods, which makes it necessary to determine them beforehand. Also prepare some materials and utensils that can be used for all different cleaning methods.

  • cotton cloths
  • microfiber cloths
  • sponges
  • Cleaning gloves

In addition to these, you also need various cleaning agents, which depend on the material and the method used. These are dealt with in the following sections. If you have sensitive skin, you should not do without gloves for some of the solutions. The cleaning agents used could cause irritation, which you should definitely avoid.

Note: If you only have to remove small, not too thick stains, you can try a dirt eraser, which is available per piece for a few euros. Gently rub the spray off the surface with the eraser, being careful not to use too much force, so that you don't tear the wallpaper off the wall, for example.

Of tiles

Stains on tiles are typical when you use the spray in the bathroom. Tiled walls and floors are a typical victim of hairspray stains and, luckily, they can be removed with little effort. The top priority in removing stains is the type of tile. Ceramic tiles are much easier to get rid of hairspray than variants made of natural stone or terracotta, which are much more susceptible to certain cleaning agents. For this reason, there are several means that you can use for cleaning. Hair spray stains can be removed from the tiles in the following ways.

softener

An ideal means of cleaning delicate tiles made of natural stone or terracotta is the use of fabric softener. Softener does not decompose the material and reliably removes the stains as long as you use it correctly. The application is very simple. You take a spray bottle and fill it with two parts of warm water and one part of fabric softener and shake it well. The entire fabric softener should be distributed as well as possible to improve the effect.

Apply it this way:

  • spray the hairspray spots
  • wipe gently with a microfiber cloth
  • reapply if necessary
  • then wipe with fresh water
  • dry

This method is particularly suitable if there is a film of hairspray on the tiles. You can also use the fabric softener to remove larger hairspray stains. The agent even works on ceramic tiles and is very versatile.

spirit

If the stains are particularly stubborn, you should try alcohol. Alcohol is a proven remedy for hairspray stains and alcohol is the best choice because it is easy to use and dose. You only need a little of the alcohol for this and then use it as follows.

  • Put alcohol on cotton cloth
  • a small amount is sufficient
  • do not dilute with water
  • rub it in with the stain
  • then wipe the area with a damp cloth

The results with alcohol are usually visible within a few moments, since the alcohol is effective against the spray. This makes it easy to remove even thicker or stubborn stains that have been visible for a long time.

Glass cleaners containing alcohol

Glass cleaner is another cleaning agent with which you can easily remove hair spray stains. Normal glass cleaners can work, but in most cases are not effective enough to completely remove the stains. Instead, choose a cleaner that already contains alcohol and use it in the same way as alcohol.

No matter which of the above methods you choose, tiles can be fairly well removed from the hairspray stains. If your walls in the bathroom or kitchen are full of them, just use the cleaners and within a short time the tiles will be pleasant and clean again.

Note: When cleaning the tiles, make absolutely sure that the joints do not come into contact with alcohol when you use it. Above all, alcohol can attack silicone tile joints and you have to pull them again if you are not careful enough.

From glass

Hair spray stains can be removed from glass as easily as from tiles. This is due to the nature of the material, because the spray does not adhere so strongly to glass. In this case, there are also a few methods that you can use to clean the glass of hairspray stains.

Brillenputztücher

For small or fresh stains, the use of glasses cleaning cloths is worthwhile. Since these contain a small amount of alcohol, cleaning is very easy and you just have to wipe the spray away. Go ahead and do something a little harder to really remove the stains. Remains of the hairspray stains should also be removed thoroughly. If they don't go away completely, just use another cloth.

dish soap

Just like the fabric softener variant, the use of detergent is ideal. Especially with glass, detergent is more effective than fabric softener and can be used with little effort to remove the hairspray stains. Mix a little washing-up liquid with water and apply it thoroughly with a brush that has bristles that are not too hard or too sharp. A sponge is also suitable if the spots are not too thick. Then rinse thoroughly and the stain is gone.

vinegar

You can also use vinegar essence to remove the glass from the hairspray. Since vinegar essence is a very aggressive agent, the hairspray spots don't really stand up to it. This makes it much easier to use because you only need to put a little of the essence on a clean cloth and rub the stains with it. Then rinse with fresh water as usual and dry. After that, always let a little fresh air into the room to let the vinegar smell drift outside.

You can also use alcohol-based glass cleaners and spirit on glass, as they work just as well. They apply these in the same way, only you have to count on the fact that the cleaners flow down from a glass wall or door faster than from tiles or tiles.

Tip: If there are small stains that you can clearly see, you can also use a glass scraper to remove the spray. Just be careful not to cut into the material so as not to damage the glass door of your shower.

Of plastic

Plastic is a little more difficult to clean because the hairspray sticks much more to this material. To remove the hairspray stains, you have to be much more careful, however, because alcohol decomposes plastic. Even vinegar essence can attack some plastics, which makes cleaning dangerous. Instead, you can try detergent and fabric softener.

Another remedy that has proven to be an effective stain remover is shaving cream . This does not attack the material, nor is it difficult to use. Shaving gel is not quite as effective because it flows down quickly and is not as effective at the same time. Get a bottle of shaving cream and use it as follows.

Step 1: Spray the stain generously with shaving foam and rub it in a little. Do not rub the foam from the spot, just gently rub it in.

Step 2: Leave the foam on for a period of about ten minutes to get the full effect. A little longer does no harm if the stains are stubborn or quite old.

Step 3: Wipe the foam as thoroughly as possible with a fresh, slightly damp cloth. The foam should have made short work of the hairspray stains within this period. If this is not the case, repeat the procedure.

Especially with plastic shower walls, be careful not to use sponges or brushes that have hard bristles or steel wool. That would only damage the plastic.

Of wood

Wood is as difficult as plastic. Since wood is vulnerable, you should only clean your doors with a detergent or fabric softener solution. If necessary, let the hairspray stains soak in the solution for a while and then remove them with a cloth. You should only use the soft side of sponges and very soft brushes on wood in order not to damage the natural material.

From the wallpaper

While you can clean painted walls without wallpaper with a detergent or fabric softener solution, you need to use other detergents for wallpaper. Since wallpaper can absorb a lot of moisture with a few exceptions, you need other cleaners so that the material does not soak up.

In this case, a paste of baking soda or baking soda and water is recommended. Use significantly more water here, but make sure that the paste is still thick enough and not too liquid. This is applied to the hairspray stains and wiped off with a damp microfiber cloth after a short exposure time . If you have sensitive wallpaper, you should first carry out a test in an inconspicuous place.
